Engineers are progessive series of upgrades vs. one time shop

For me, engineers ruined the game. I haven't played for any significant amount of time since they were released. I'd still love to come back to Elite but I'm too salty about engineers

Around the same time as they released engineers they rebalanced PvE, so now you basically have to do a pain-in-the-butt grind / mini-game with an SRV, with horrible controls/responsivenes and a terrible scanner, to even get the mats for Engineers. They completely ruined the play-your-way ethos as soon as they added them. Now, if you could get the materials as a by-product of trading, or bounty hunting, or exploring (i.e. any of the established professions) then it wouldn't be so bad. As it is I have no desire to drive an SRV, so I have no desire to play.

Unless someone can tell me things have changed? ^^

Things have definitively changed for the better. 'Casual' engineering (G3 Thrusters, G5 FSD a few rolls each at Farseer) is a non issue. The only thing i really disklike is the god-like meta, where you are basically forced to put 100s of hours into RNG to engage in serious PvP. (slightly overstated)

Right now I have 5 Heavy Duty Shield Boosters at 169.9%, a 156% FSD Class 6, and a 139% 4A Thruster. All the other Engineered components I own are sorta "meh". I would quit the game and buy a subscription to Star Citizen if those few awesome upgrades were removed.
