They are definitely not always everywhere, I tried 3 rescue ships two days ago (and yes, I can differentiate between rescue ship and fleet carrier

I've actually gone back to turreted MC for AX Scout combat.
Even with doing less damage, I find I have to concentrate far less and can look around more and have more control over the ship whilst turrets keep shooting.
I can also start moving away from the exploding Thargoid earlier, before it blows up and plasters me with caustic goo. It still does get me sometimes, but far less than with Gimballed, which I have to keep on target longer for the kill.
Found great system for my preferences HIP 7338 - with 20 limpets, do scout kills for 1/2 to 1 hour, then get to Kirchoff station (under attack and so can do more combat before docking if you like) and take evac wounded missions to T Tor rescue ship, just to mix up the play, instead of all combat or all missions, etc.

With Scouts having a tendency to fly past our ship turrets can take full advantage of their 360 deg firing arc, effectively narrowing the gap in raw DPS. It's the same principle as with fixed vs gimballed - higher damage potential that is offset by lower ToT.
The other factor at play is that Scouts are super squishy and can already be taken out in just a few seconds, so any improvements on the classic turret loadout will necessarily be incremental.
Where the gimballed AXMCs really get to shine is when engaging Interceptors. Flybys aren't as frequent so it's relatively easy to stay on target and get the full benefit from the higher DPS potential. The biggest drawback in this scenario is the flaccid Xeno Scanner. During testing in an invaded system it took me several minutes to resolve the scan, but taking out the hearts was super easy, barely an inconvenience (well, a heart actually, getting the scan had done enough damage that I was looking at the rebuy screen shortly after).
Totally agree, I scarper when Interceptors appear as no idea how to deal with them, but have found Scouts great with turreted EAX MC.

A different question: If I'd like to entertain some bug squishing with a Capital ship around, but not necessarily a CG, are there systems where I might find such AXCZs? Ideally stable over a longer period of time, like a month?

Why have a community goal where those who participate are note guaranteed all of the rewards because of "stock"? Doesn't seem fair.
If it's out of stock, it'll be back in stock later.

Sometimes, ship equipment is out of stock at a particular station, that's not specific to the new AX gear. Stupid game design, making us rely on external tools like

Especially bad design because there's no ingame way to know what the station could be selling in the first place.

Well it isn’t just those that participated who got access to these weapons, the goal was making them available to everyone.
Yes it would be nice if the game was more like the real world where shops never run out of high demand items, like high end GFX cards.
IIRC only a couple of rare items have ever gone out of stock for longer than a few days.
To be honest I think it's fine that they occasionally run out of stuff when there is a high demand. Personally I participated in all the CGs, 4 of them to the top 10% and 2 of them to the top 25%. I normally don't like trading all that much and did it for absolute peanuts. I still haven't picked any up as I have better weapons, but plan to check some of them out when I get the time.
You'd want Invasion systems in the Thargoid war which have Federal or Imperial allegiance.
Unlikely that any of those would be stable for an entire month as the invasion state is a popular one for groups to target, and in most systems only lasts 3-4 weeks if not cleared out, but once you'd found one you might not have to move more than a few LY to get another one the next week.
Just getting back into things after christmas ... so, am I right in thinking there ARE size 3 gimballed enhanced AX multi-canons available (I'd assumed you could only get size 2) but they can be tricky to find?
