Oh you have to tell me, how the Viper MK4 will work out. I also have a AX MK4 Viper. It has 2 size 2 mod. plasma chargers and 2 size 1 turreted thermal vent beams. But haven’t tried it out yet, because I had the same idea, switching to 2 size 1 mod. Shards and maybe 1 size 2 gimballed EAXMC and 1 size 2 mod. ax missle rack (Sirius version).

Okay - first outing in the Viper MkIV dropping into Threat 4 AX signals with this build:


It’s not quite optimised (could get a few hundred more hull into it with some engineered modules) but was VERY fun - and effective - against Scouts. Gimbals track targets perfectly well despite the far-back position of the hard points so no worries there and being able to see the glowing Shard Cannons right in front of you is very cool. Seems pretty effective and reckon it’d be a great little craft for base defence CZs where you can land to repair as needed.

Then an Interceptor jumped in - and I was merrily shooting it at a distance not knowing what it was (must buy scanner…) - and launched THREE swarms? The hell - is that a thing now? Anyway, shutdown field hit me, two swarms flew “through” me and the ship rebooted with about 19% hull and a damaged PP / PD such that I couldn’t boost regularly and also couldn’t fire my heat sink. Needless to say my attempts to flee were futile. At least the rebuy was only ~450k!!

TL;DR

Great fun against Scouts. Interceptors, not so much! 😂
 
Find a system with one of the Rescue megaships, dock there and you should be able to buy them.
For what it's worth, I found mine - large and medium gimballed AX MCs - at a ship called "Allied Solace" in the Ross 112 system.

EDIT: Looks like the spot I bought mine at is out of stock. Suggest you use INARA or EDDB to try and find a ship/station with stock near to your location.

Got and already tested them on some scouts. They just shred them. And tracking is much better.

Hm, okay good to know. Must be careful then with the shut down fields. Will give it hopefully soon a try.

Nice! Yeh, I keep alternating between shielded/unshielded on both my FAS and Viper … the shield can help mitigate Scout damage allowing you to keep more hull for when the Interceptors turn up but … I dunno, depends how I fly … if I hit the caustic a lot and have to keep Silent Running then the shield becomes a bit of a faff.

I’m switching the Plasma Chargers on my FAS to Shard Cannons now as well having used the MC / Shard combo on the Viper it just feels like a really nice pairing and I was having a right time of it trying to hit Interceptor hearts with the Plasmas tonight!!

I just got a pair at Solovyev Silo in Rana. Got the 20% powerplay discount on hardpoints too.

Having given 'em a testfire I can confirm they do not have the annoying spinup delay of regular large MCs.

My krait (previously mothballed for a gauss FAS) is now rocking two large AXMCs and two modshards (which I also just unlocked today). I tried testing with four modshards at once and while hilarious they're a little too spicy for my tastes, not to mention insanely power-hungry.

It's a little too late in the day to give them a real live test in active combat but I'm feeling pretty nice about it.

This looks like an oversight. The other enhanced AX weapons became available at a later time than on the rescue ships. It seems they must be added manually to the three "all modules" stations by FDev. You could raise a issue/ticked.

Having tried a few weapon variations for CZs, I think I’m zeroing in on gimballed MCs plus mod Shards as my preferred pairing. A nice combo of easy DPS and “kablam”! 😂

I guess for a dedicated Interceptor ship, I might prefer Mod Plasmas paired with Gauss?

No scanner is required; you can determine an Interceptor just by watching the radar! Observe this picture, complete with Frame Shift Anomalies distorting the holographic displays:

Those three contacts you see just above and to the left are a group of Scouts jumping in, and the contact ahead is an Orthrus. Scouts have the same radar icon as any starship with hardpoints deployed, while Interceptors almost have no icon at all. It is actually a small red circle, as if the display is trying to tell you that a hostile asteroid is in the area, but it is faint enough that you can assume any vertical line with no icon is an Interceptor.

The chevrons on either side are due to being targeted. Speaking of which, it can help to check Contacts occasionally and use that for targeting—just as with Human starships, the Interceptor contacts will be much higher in the list than any Scout contacts, even without a Xeno Scanner.

I have only ever seen one swarm per Interceptor, though.
 
Where do you buy these? I signed up and participated in this event, then when it was completed, i got the credits and now that I need to go to a rescue megaship to get it. When I went to the nearest one in ross 112, they didn't have it. Ideas?

Edit: I went to another 2 close by, same deal, doesn't have the gimballed listed
