I consider myself an average, casual player. I liked the idea of interacting with real people. Sounded like fun. So, I've been playing in open play for over a month now, but no longer...
It all started when I was hanging around the Nav Marker in the Cubeo system in my fully outfitted Asp collecting bounties on NPCs. When I mistakenly fired on an NPC who I was trying to scan. This, of course gave me an immediate WANTED title. So for the galactic equivalent of a "fender bender", I'm WANTED.
So, I head for the station to buy a Sidewinder and clear my name. But before I can get to the station, I'm interdicted by a player in Fer de Lance. Now, I get interdicted all the time by NPCs and can almost always get out of it if I want to. But with this player interdiction, there was no escape. It did not mater where the escape vector was. My bar went down, and his went up unless mine was dead center.
After being pulled out of supercruise, I made a pass on him with my class 2 beam lasers and 4, class 1 multi-canons. I immediately realized that I was out of my league. So, I ran. I made it into supercruise with about 30% hull. I got my bearings and headed for the station to get repaired...Only to be immediately interdicted by the same Fer de Lance who proceeded to finish the job. No communication. I was freaking out and couldn't figure out how to text him anyway. So, blown to bits, I was.
All for a 400 credit bounty.
Okay, I have insurance. Cash flow hasn't been so great lately, so I had to take the loan. 800,000 credits or start over; not much of a choice there.
Time to play it safe and do some simple trade runs and get my cash back up and pay off the loan.
I made two runs.
But guess what. I was interdicted by a player wing in the same spot. Pirates, I suppose. This ended nearly the same as the encounter with the Fer de Lance. I had no way of escape. No communication. When I realized that I was about to die, I pulled my Asp to a complete stop and just sat there. They knocked me down to 1% hull, circled me a couple of times. Then, unceremoniously and figuratively put their weapon to my head and pulled the trigger.
All for 88 tones of food cubes.

Now, I'm in a Sidewinder, at the butt-end of inhabited space with my 1000 credits in a private game.
I'm not posting this to whine. I knew the risks. But I'm playing to have fun. Having my entire Elite career reduced to smoldering ruins in the coarse of 30 minutes is not my idea of fun.
My point for this post is basically to say that this type of play will drive most players from open play and these "career" players will be left to fight amongst themselves. And wont that be fun...for them.
