Essential Foliage META-Wishlist

I have seen several threads over the years with suggestions for foliage, but there is not one list yet where we can determine what is most popular (like the ones we have for animals). Therefore, in this thread you can enter your list of 25 most essential plants, algae and fungi for Planet Zoo.

Since plant names can be confusing (and sometimes the same name is used for different plants), it would be appreciated if names include the scientific name, but I understand that this may be a lot of work. If you do not want to add this, please try to stick with names used for the same plant by users previously. I'm open to suggestions to use a different common name if this is preferred by the community.

  • You can enter one list with a total of 25 plant species.
  • Please add the scientific name and the preferred common name.
  • If a scientific name is lacking, or your plant is not specified to the species, your vote will be added to the highest species in the list of the same genus/common name. If no other species of that group is in the list, it will first be listed as an unspecified species and may later be added to one that receives votes.
  • If you wish to change the species of your previously unspecified choice, please reply in this threat with a quote of your original list and a highlight of your changes.
  • If you wish to change the species of your previous choice to another species in the same genus that already received votes, please reply in this threat with a quote of your original list and a highlight of your changes.
  • If you wish to replace the species of your previous choice that has been added to the game, please reply in this threat with a quote of your original list and a highlight of your changes.

I can't really think of 25 but some New Zealand foliage I'd like in the game would be:

1. Pohutakawa tree (Metrosideros excelsa)
2. Kowhai (Sophora microphylla)
3. Kahikatea/"white pine" (Dacrycarpus dacrydioides)*
4. Cabbage tree (Cordyline indivisa)

6. Harakeke/New Zealand flax (Phormium tenax)
7. Silver tussock (Poa cita)
*Not actually in the white pine family, but it resembles white pines so the name was borrowed.

I consulted the foilage suggestions already posted, and added in some species that are personal favorites/ commonly found in gardening/ can fill certain niche.

1. Garden rose
2. Orange tree (Citrus sinensis)
3. Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba)
4. Saucer Magnolia (Magnolia × soulangeana)

22. Cacao tree (Theobroma cacao)
23. Pumpkin (Cucurbita)
24. Horsetail reed (Equisetum hyemale)
25. Delonix regia

I have updated the list. Keep in mind the following things:
  • I only added the lists with 25 plants so far, in case @NZFanatic and @Antimony96 wish to add species to their list.
  • If species were not listed under the specific name (i.e. the name in the list missed the scientific name or only included family/genus name) I added this vote to the highest species on the list that is specified. This means the following:
    • The vote for Papaveraceae by @sockeyejoe is added to the vote for common poppy (Papaver rhoeas) by @Aramar.
    • Bush rose and Garden rose are combined under Rosa spp.
    • Cucurbita, Dipsacus, Eliophorum, Hebe, Myosotis, Rhamnis and Tulipa are kept under their genus name until a specific species is added to the list.
    • Kelp and Orchid are kept under their family name until a specific species is added.
    • If you wish to specify one of your choices, please reply to this thread.
    • In the wishlist, unspecified family names are listed in bold and unspecified genus names in underscore.
  • For Delonix regia (voted by @Ashmund_zoo ) I added the common name 'Fire tree'.

These are my 25 plants, with scientific names and a brief explanation about each species:

1. Weeping paperbark Melaleuca leucadendra - A 20m swamp-forest tree from northern Australia, New Guinea and Southeast Asia to India

23. Bluebell Hyacinthoides non-scripta - Speaking personally, a badger enclosure does not feel complete without these west European flowers
24. Joshua tree Yucca brevifolia - A North American desert tree that probably evolved to have its fruit dispersed by mammoths and ground sloths
25. Venus flytrap Dionaea muscipula - Might be too small, but it is one of the most charismatic plants - bonus points if one of the traps occasionally closes

Updated the list after @Cynogale bennettii's vote. I will wait with @Spiderhawk's list as it will be expanded later.

Some things to note:
  • Since we now have a specified kelp species, all kelp votes have been added to Nereocystis luetkeana. Please let me know if you disagree. In that case I'll keep your vote as "Kelp - Laminariales".
  • For the genera Cordyline, Diospyros, Melaleuca, Pinus and Primula different species are in the list. If you wish to combine your vote for that genus with the other species in the list, let me know.

1. Pohutukawa (Metrosideros excelsa)
2. Kauri (Agathis australis)
3. Ginkgo (Ginkgo bilaba)
4. Yew tree (Taxus baccata)
5. Pampas grass (Cortaderia)
6. Traveller's palm (Ravenala madagascariensis)
7. Heath (Calluna vulgaris)
8. Red maple (Acer rubrum)
9. Daisy (Bellis perennis)
10. Narcis / daffodil (Narcissus pseudonarcissus)
11. Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale)
12. Red campion (Silene dioica)
13. Viper's bugloss (Echium vulgare)
14. Blue bonnets (Jasione montana)
15. Silver birch (Betula pendula)
16. Great bougainvillea (Bougainvillea spectabilis)
17. Pijpenstrootje / purple moor-grass (Molinia caerulea)
18. Tembusu tree (Cyrtophyllum fragrans)
19. Foxglove (Digitalis purpurea)
20. Paperbark (Melaleuca quinquenervia)
21. Rain tree (Samanea saman)
22. Teak tree (Tectona grandis)
23. Wild tulip (Tulipa sylvestris)
24. Cultivated tulip - Triumph tulip (Tulipa gesneriana) *
25. Cultivated tulip - Single (classic) tulip (Tulipa gesneriana) *

* All types of tulips are simply called 'Tulipa' and all fall under Tulipa gesneriana I think, but every color or variation has a different name. For instance, 'Tulipa big smile', 'Tulipa blushing beauty', 'Tulipa andre rieu', 'Tulipa dreamland', 'Tulipa greuze', and dozens upon dozens more are all Single tulips, or the classic ones you think of when you think of tulips. Single tulips encompass both single early tulips and single late tulips, which has to do with the time they bloom, which is irrelevant for the game, but relevant for people who want to look these flowers up ;) Otherwise if you search for 'single tulip' you'll just find pictures of... one single tulip. Haha :p
And there are dozens upon dozens of Triumph tulips as well, such as 'Tulipa arabian mystery', 'Tulipa abu hassan', 'Tulipa barcalona', 'Tulipa attila', 'Tulipa cairo', 'Tulipa cassini', 'Tulipa dynasty', 'Tulipa don quichotte', etc etc etc.
They are all color variations of either Triumph or Single tulips. There are more types of tulips but I like these best. I suppose it's best to call them 'Cultivated tulip - Single (classic)' and 'Cultivated tulip - Triumph'. The wild tulip is a different thing entirely though, which is why it is specifically Tulipa sylvestris. So the wild tulip and the cultivated tulips should not be put under the same label in the list! :)

Updated the list with your choices, with the following things to note:
  • Wild tulip is added as a new entry under Tulipa sylvestris.
  • Cultivated tulip is added to the previous Tulipa votes which are now listed under Tulipa gesneriana.
  • I can only add one vote per species, so I'd suggest you add another entry to replace the second Tulipa gesneriana vote.
  • For the game developers, I suggest that commonly cultivated plants like tulips and roses should be made with flexicolour flowers to create the different variations.
