Establish your own Minor Faction and FAQ

My group is interested in registering as a group and minor faction. I have some questions first. First, is the group name for FDev purposes only?
Correct. Player groups right now have no in-game represenattion, i.e. Clan Tags.
I assume the minor faction name is what's shown in game?
if you apply and receive a minor faction, the name and description appears for your faction in the system map, and the description will appear on that system on the galaxy map.
What are all the available "types" we can choose from? Are there descriptions of the types?
You can find a list with some descriptions on the Elite Wiki here: http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/Government Though I confess I can't recall seeing some of these in game.

Edit: this is a better list I think: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=132071
What are all the allegiance options?
any of the major factions (Federation, Alliance, Empire) or if you wish to go it alone you can register as independant.
Can we be both PVE and PVP?
Anything you like, but your faction will appear in all game modes and be controlled by the background simulator just like any other minor faction
Do you need to know our in game numbers or out of game numbers? Does it have to be exact or can it be an estimate?
People come and go from the game and from groups. I just gave them a ballpark figure of what I have and what I expect to grow to. Since groups are ranked by membership, I wouldn't misrepresent yourself to be larger than you are just to try and get yourself in a higher tier though.

So I basically have to imagine that I'm part of the faction?
Whats the point, really... it looks like the same process of creating a minor NPC faction, only that the players get to name it this time.

This has Anti-MMO written all over.

Okay, am I the only one who finds that some of these minor factions are disturbingly 4th-wall-breaking? I mean sure, things like "Elite Dangerous Community" or "Aisling Duval - Prismatic Imperium Facebook Group" are fair group names, but as minor factions represented in the game they have definite IRL connotations that seem quite out of place within the Elite universe.

Thats exactly the point. If you ever wanted a chance to try your hand at gaming the background simulation, and there are alot that do, you can now do so with a faction of your own creation.

Elite isn't exactly your standard MMO. Thank goodness.

What, you don't think facebook is still going to be a thing in 3301?:D

Clearly they ignored (as ever) those of us who asked for a reasonable level of moderation (beyond just the usual politically correct type stuff - racism, sexism, etc) on these kind of things.

The group names and the minor faction names are not the same. Required to use appropriate-to-setting names.

They're called the Prismatic Imperium in-game by the way. Cubeo.

Will a minor faction only placed on one controlling system and must then expand to other systems, I read on the forums that expanding need still some work to let work properly

How does the faction implementation work in detail? I'm interested in these details:

* What level of influence my faction gets when they're established in the system?
* If my faction is Independent, but the system is currently other (say, Federal) - does it get re-alligned to be Independent?
* Do we get to choose which station we want to have as ours?

* What level of influence my faction gets when they're established in the system?
I think from the feedback I've read from others it may vary. But I know your faction will be installed as the ruling faction of the system you select, and your description will appear in the Galaxy Map and the system map. My own faction started at 60% influence. (but then it went down and forced an election with the old ruling faction, so I've been propping it up to try and make sure we come out on top)

Since you will be installed as the new ruling faction, yes it will.
* Do we get to choose which station we want to have as ours?
No. Every system has one 'main' station, which is usually held by the current ruling faction. Whichever that one is, is where your faction will be installed.

Two short questions:
- Is there a minimum number of players needed to create a minor faction?
- What would experienced players suggest as player-number to be able to keep the faction at least in place (not going down from NPCs alone)

Thanks in advance!

NPC actions dont lower faction influence. Nothing goes on while you are away because the NPC's only are present in your instance anyway.

One dedicated person can hold a faction. I've seen one person affect 80+differential the influence in a system in one day multiple times for a month straight. Some people really like PVE.

The background simulator is still crunching the numbers though. So its true NPC's dont drive influence, invisible forces are still at work moving those numbers around.

From my own testing, one's ability to move influence numbers depends alot on the system's population. One person can operate in a system of just a few million or less and make a visible difference. In a system of billions, you will probably need some help. Granted, my testing was done before 1.4, which according to the patch notes has tweaked how this works somewhat.

Before 1.4 population had no effect on influence. This is something new to 1.4 supposedly.

You Mercs would probably know better than I. It seemed like thats how it was working with the experiments I did in two systems with radically different populations, though in testing you don't have access to see all the variables working with or against you. It also seems alot easier to push influence around after 1.4.

How big does your group have to be?

Most of the computer power play faction names are one word like federation, empire, alliance, etc. wouldn't it be weird if someone's group is named bean burrito and they become a major power? Lol
