EuroGamer: The state of Elite Dangerous (according to its most prominent players)

Yes but again, this 'passion' and 'potential' is not something new.
It's the same story we have been hearing for 3 years now and I assume will continue to hear as the game is developed.

To recap, it's not the content, it's the lazy journalism I take issue with here.

I don't mean to spell out the obvious, but it sounds like you're a wee bit sour that it wasn't you that was chosen to be interviewed for the article.

Article seems like its written by a child and who is Dr A are we sure this article is real... few spelling mistakes etc

It shows how bad Frontier is at managing their community, and the lack of professionalism Brett C has. FD has been lucky not to have this kind of articles against them. And that joke was incredibly dumb for that. Also, to dismiss the article as a 'bunch of moaners' is delusional. Many of you have been dismissing criticism with responses like that for ages, but how long can you keep doing that? The criticism finally reached the gaming media, as it was bound to happen. It is not just a 'bunch of moaners', public opinion has consequences, and this is one of the first ones. This is a serious problem, and is finally showing how real it is. I wonder if FD will finally react.

At some point someone is going to make an extensive video documenting all the flops FD have made (if it is not the case someone is preparing something like that right now). If something like that gets some momentum, I guess that is when the is going to hit the fan.

I guess some of the people dealing with PR and CM dont realize that people working for this pages might as well be players of the game. The stupidity of such joke blew my mind. I found it funny, but the irresponsibility of it was beyond me. And worst of all, Brett C insisted in being sarcastic. Dude, you made a huge mistake.

Yes, it takes a tabloid to start a fire, Today was Eurogamer , then tomorrow can be IGN. If they smell truth on this "acusations" the fire get's wide and this thing close to a "major" releasecan be very dangerous... maybe a fail can make devs open their eyes for the real necessities of the game?!

Well I read nothing new from my perspective other than the existence of CMDR Arcannon - I'd never heard of him before. Pretty much everyone who has experience of playing ED for more than 6 months knows of what it does well and what it does badly. Almost everyone knows of the increasingly urgent need for the core gameplay mechanics to finally be fleshed out once and for all. Next to that is the problem of how every new headline feature that gets added very rarely connects together with the rest of the game.

Most of that article was already pretty much distilled and collected here in this thread on this very forum:

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/344577-It-feels-like-someone-is-doing-their-job-wrong

Someone posts a link to a major games media outlet publishing an article highlighting the unhappiness in the ED community, and the majority of replies are a bunch of dismissive snark.

Can you see my surprised face?

I was going to say!

When large and popular game sites run articles about "Trouble With FDEV, ED and its Community", the last thing dedicated players of this game should be doing is dismissing the article out of hand.

I don't give a rip if you like EuroGamer or not. Your opinion is easily in the minority worldwide so it really doesn't matter all that much. Eurogamer is read by millions of gamers every single day. A not so flattering article about Elite Dangerous on the eve of the PS4 launch is the last thing Frontier wants to see!

Maybe this will be that additional "kick" in the rear end so many of us have been waiting for?

I'll bite.

That's a bit more like it! Not far off my own impressions of the article and the game. There are niches of player communities with diverse loves and hates, but what's happening on the forum is a dismissal of criticism - and that's because those niches and groups, just like any game, live in their own little niches and forums and discord groups.

I think it's only right and fair to let those criticisms be aired and discussed on the official forum even if the playstyle and group is utterly alien to you. It's really not helpful and certainly not professional to show animosity and dismissal, particularly if you're doing it in an quasi-official capacity. That's the issue I have with how this thread started to unfold within 10 minutes, I don't think I'm being unfair in saying that, and I don't think it's desirable for the forum or the game.

So the PvP'ers were interviewed and are this month's hot topic. Maybe Eurogamer should talk to the canon guys next, or Isinona, or Kerrash. As long as people are being truthful and are playing the game I don't have a problem with it, and I love reading the crazy different persepctives and experiences people have with the game, and all the amazing experiences, loves, hates, criticism and disappointment that comes with it - if you're being honest.

LOL!

Elite Dangerous is vast, but it is for many sparse. Sure, you can do combat, explore, gather resources and trade, but you won't find much in the way of cutscenes or setpieces. It can feel, at times, like a grind. It can feel, at times, a bit boring.

Yeah, what people are after is more cutscenes. Spot on, Eurogamer!

*rubs his brow* I'm sorry if I sound harsh here but... I'll stick to discussing how we'd like exploration to be more than *jump honk jump* and I think I'll just drop out of this "no no FLYING is actually core game play, not exploring, combat and trading" right now.
I'm not disagreeing with you when you want to improve that, I'm just pointing out that the flight model being the core gameplay is not just some silly opinion - its is quite literally the core of the gameplay.

Pretty much rubbish. He makes a few good points but he also take massive liberities with the "player base", basically sensationalising the piece and making out ED players are somehow different from other players - what an idiot.

Then he said this

It is, after all, a hardcore space simulation.

rofl.gif

Not everything he says is , he makes some good points but we don't need the hyperbole or the innacuracies

Additional: This is nonsense too

"The learning curve for this game is steeper than any game I've ever played," CMDR Nightshady says. "If you just put somebody in front of a computer and say, play this game, they probably wouldn't be able to get their ship out of a station. And if they did they'd probably do something wrong and get killed."

I sat at my computer and worked out how to launch in 5 minutes. What must the learning curve for Falcon 4 be then?

Here's 200 buttons now go ahead and switch the right ones in the right order and get the engine started.

Nah, being interviewed by Eurogamer and making sure you state how much you genuinely love the game whilst laying out your criticisms and thoughts seems to be the absolute BEST way to be viewed as:

* "moaning" - BongoBaggins
* "There's a game.... that some people like..." - Jenner
* "people I wouldn't have a beer with" - h347h

or my personal favourite!

* "meh" - Tj

Way to engage your community guys, way to comment on an article written about the game, well done beers all round.
These are our moderators, with that level or reading comprehension. And constantly patronizing and ridiculing criticism. This is the people FD is trusting their community to.

Who the flip is Dr A? Never heard of him. Why didn't they interview someone who was actually well known like Obsidian Ant or Mobius, instead of whoever that writer is mates with?

That's because the article was written by a four year old. That's about the level of response it deserves.
