EuroGamer: The state of Elite Dangerous (according to its most prominent players)

As the player base mutates from the so called white knight, fanboy, forum dads of the Kickstarter, to a much more cosmopolitan user base all with lots of hours in the game, we have seen the forums move into a more negative mindset. Every addition is critically dissected and reduced to its most basic element and basically panned by at least one section of the community. FD have learned if they say X and we get Y the forums breathe fire and brimstone or should it be salt.

Part of the problem is that we think developing x would take y days, but frontier knows it takes y + so many more days. The season model in effect crimps what they can do, because development has to be inside the reasonable delivery period of the 2.x release.

I think if we collectively were more supportive and critical in a reasonable fashion, FD would be able to be more communicative.

I do think FD would be wise to get a number of the more reasonable players who can give objective comment from different perspective and have a brainstorm and try and get the community on board, but also look at developing areas which players would be receptive to.

Really? A dev comes on the forum to give news about a speed fix, and a future update to fix a known problem with it and you use it to "poo" on them?

I have a link for you too: Here

Fix that don t fix a thing. Yeah right. Oh your reward was an EFC, ah no it will be CIF now.

The problem that it is raising, it is the overall quality that is more and more poor. You don't want to see it, fine. But you cannot say they are doing a good job.

There are more bugs than content nowdays.

Why? I mean by this standard no game dev ever made good work, they all deliver plenty of bugs in there product.

They could take 1 or 2 years, not an issue if the update would be good, full of new content/features and quality (without so much bugs). That is the main issue here.

And ? Is it an excuse ? If some other games have some bugs issue, it is ok for FD to have SO much ? Not logical I think.

ehm.... define "some" and "SO much". Whats the stats I can use to compare ED to other games to come to objective conclusion that people at FD are being rubish at there job?

I have read this thread from the beggining. The amount of white knight mods that appeared from the very first pages is astonishing, and they made sure early on this thread, to derail this discussion in a disgusting way, acting like a bunch of kids with zero professionalism.

To the mods that are ready to tell me that you also can tell your opinion, or if i have a problem with the mods then report blah blah, or talk to Brett blah blah, save it. I know all your copypasta answers. instead of trying to defend your lousy appearance on this thread, try to isolate and read only the posts made by you mods in this thread, and then come back and tell me that you were all have been constructive in discussing the article that OP posted.

The fact that i made a post not discussing the actual article mentioned, is also disgusting.

Just read that article.

Talk about a serious case of déjà vu........

We have been saying this from the start. Yes the game is good but the moment someone knocks the rose-coloured spectacles off or, if you're lucky, you get an itch in your eye, you see that Yes, the game is but an inch deep and a mile wide, getting wider with every update. It's a 1984-Elite all dolled up to look pretty, the ultimate exercise in repetition repetition repetition repetition and repetition.

I know it's all that - it's blatantly obvious. I've accepted it from the start, said acceptance having given me the patience to enjoy the mundaneness of it all, also largely helped by the fact that there is no other space game at present worthy of my time........yet.

Yes, the vast majority of us have said this all before. What took so long for others to realise? Not that it's important in the greater scheme of things mind you. It does however seem a bit odd that when a selective few of unknowns speak up the press sits up and listens, lol......bit late, wot!

I would like to put in an opinion before this thread gets derailled the the fashion we have seen all to often en Forum threads; PVP vs PVE , haters vs Lovers ect.
The polarization is strong with this community!
The two CMDR's interviewed in the piece clearly both pointed possibilities out and touched some of the flaws, imo. But their solutions were wrong imo.

What I think would help would E : D is:

Consistency and logic behind the background simulation. This does not function in any logical ( to an ordinary) way. Demand and supply are not in any sensible way connected, and availability of commodities are not properly connected to a given systems "Label".

Factions missions are disconnected to reality. Missions of a given faction are oddly disconnected to the reality of a system, whether the system is at war or in famine. There is not connection between a factions size and its capabilities or a systems security. Everything is centred around aggression and expansion, little about cooperation.

PowerPlay is in its own world. This is problematic at best as it creates two separate games that somehow influences each other ( I think ). It should be possible to participate in PowerPlay ( Maybe obligatory) as a "Civilian" ordinary pilot just living in space, not hostile not aligned as such. Actions in PowerPlay, agressive, should always only happen on fringes and mainly inside main Faction space. Anything else is illogical, as a "Peace" is still what we have between FED, Imp and Alliance.

Crime and Punishment should be ramped up significantly, ramped up to such a degree that Solo and PG mode were deemed unnecessary, and then could be abandoned. (yes I said that !) It is in the games interest that that everybody does something everybody else can see and evaluate. But it is equal important to the believability of the universe we are in that Anarchy is not option for building "Empires" , trade is still what keeps things together, A heavy hand on crime is still what keeps the Galaxy moving. Finge worlds and less developed Systems would be Pirate infested, but some sort of order would reign there too, because if "the scourge of piracy" was to evident, the Major Powers would take action to stop it. I believe it is possible to do this. Add cargo insurance up to an extent. (Wealthy players does not need it)

Right now the major factions are just impotent unbelievable actors with no felt power and presense, no "Special " bases or signs thereof. The ranks gained by CMDR's have no meaning whatsoever. Make those count, make the CMDR report for obligatory "service" and do missions or combat, failure to do so = loss of rank. (At least you must try). (This could also solve the "Double Ranking") (Alliance NEEDs a branch of forces (Militia ? ))

Exploits should be plugged instantly, they take sense out of the game and makes everything meaningless.
Third party tools (Logs, Trade routes) should be ingame and if not possible , welcomed by FD. It is no shame to make money by skill and devotion, it is just proof of interest on behalf of the player. The player is not FD's adversary, it is FD's strongest "Joker" dont throw it away.

I believe this things are much more important right now than future addons to the game. The features we have should be strengthened and their uses encouraged.

Ok more than 2 cents. :)

Cheers Cmdr's

It's not derailing the thread, it's people's opinions.

The fact is, there are people who are mostly happy with the game. There also also people who are mostly unhappy with the game. And there are people (I put myself in this group) that are somewhere in-between, the are happy with some things, and unhappy with others (does that make me a hater or a fanboy? I've been called both, depending on each thread's topic...).

It may seem shocking, but the mods are actually people like everyone else and, gasp, they also have their own opinions.

All opinions are valid and in the end all opinions, positive, negative, or mixed, as long as fundamented, are worth the same.

Some very good ideas there.

Sadly I am of the opinion that FD, as much as they would want to, are incapable of coding that into the existing game. It would mean injecting a whole new dimension, sort of like attempting to build a second story brick extension on top of a mud hut. Would in essence be an entire new game if they managed to pull that off.

Another salty troll for my ignore list

For those criticising the article as a hate piece, I thought it did its best to actually try and be accurate and balanced. The people quoted obviously love the game as well, I thought it reflected quite well on our game, the criticisms were spot on (I don't agree with all the solutions like 'let the galaxy burn) but I didn't think it was a bad, clickbait article. The article still admitted that ED is an awesome game and was something a bit special.
