Newcomer / Intro Exiting Supercruise - Speed Issue

When approaching a targeted station, I'm having trouble achieving a satisfactory speed so as to exit. I'm getting close in terms of distance (the blue zone) but there's no indication of my speed. Many times I go screaming past, or need to do an emergency Supercruise stop (J x 2). I know how to adjust my speed but what should I adjust it to? Thanks.
 
I use a Warthog throttle and it has an adjustable friction . Using prior HOTAS's I use to set my throttle when I got below ten to 7, now I set it to 6. I believe the standard is 7. set your throttle to the center of the blues, and as soon it the count down indicator reaches 10 throttle down to the center of the blue zone and make sure it doesn't drop below 7. Utilizing an keyboard and mouse or a game pad sucked, I was always doing a loop of shame, after switching to a hotas, I've haven't did one since.
 
You can let the supercruise assist module do the hard work for you.

If you want to fly manually in supercruise use the "six (or seven) seconds rule".

Ok, maybe a little more verbose.

If you fly without SCA (supercruise assist), power to you. When you've locked onto a target in supercruise, you will see (right side of the targeting circle in the main HUD) the distance and your ETA at your current speed. As SC speed is a function of throttle setting, local gravity gradient and your distance to target, that ETA will vary wildly as long as you're far from the target. As you approach, it will come down to more reasonable values - all you need to do now is to set your throttle to 75% ("middle of the blue") at or before your ETA reaches 6 seconds. Keep it there, and your ship will do the rest and bring you to a safe speed at a safe distance.

If you refer to the distance and speed indicstors on the left side of your radar, at your target display, that is useful for fine tuning your speed and getting an idea about how close you are to a safe drop. Those last "6 seconds" can stretch quite a bit. With a bit of experience, looking at that distance/speed indicator, you can get a feeling about what throttle setting you can get away with at which distance.

Those "6 seconds" aren't always safe, though. Sometimes, local gravity tricks you and you will still overshoot. Console yourself with the thought that an overshoot and a tight loop is faster than throttling to 6 seconds far out.

Thanks Nemo. Unfortunately my HOTAS is at my home in Australia and I am currently O'seas, lockout from going home. Hence its K&M for me. ;)

Thanks Krieger. Something else to work on. 👍 The pleasing thing is that I can now: launch manually from a stn; enter Supercruiser; navigate between stars and stations; move around the Focus Panels ..... just can't come to a satisfactory stop. Ha! But I'm getting there ........ slowly ....... ;)

Then set up your throttle to hot keys, you can set 25/50/75/100 to dedicated hot keys, when the countdown timer drops to or just below 9 seconds press the key for 75% throttle, that will do it every time. Mind you once you get used to it it's actually much faster to do a loop in and stop but it does take some practice and I must admit to never having tried it using keyboard and mouse.

Varonica? Is it a "she" CMDR? What's the bloody place coming! Joking aside ...... how nice. 👍 And it's in poor taste by me to draw attention to it! Let's hope there are many more out there. :)

SC is an art form if you want to optimize it, and at some point you will want to, and no matter how long you've flown, you'll still mess it up occasionally (I know I still do), but for now just take it easy. Great advice already offered here, so I won't belabor the point. Only thing I'd say would be don't obsess too much about the 7/6 second rule right now. The information is 100% correct, but it doesn't leave you with much margin for error. Set up a keybind for 75% throttle, hit that when the countdown reaches 9/8 secs, then just wait for the "safe to disengage" message and drop out.

Plenty of time to fuss over shaving off a few secs by cutting it close like the rest of us later. :)

You can, with judicial use of the throttle, drop that 6 second timer to 5 seconds and still drop out safely, but it's really not enough to worry about and if you are having control issues best to play it safe anyway.

Oh yeah and, being an obsessive nerd, I sometimes succumb to the temptation of playing with it ;)

But, as you said, it's probably not worth it. Never stopped me from anything, though ;)

Once you get within 6 mm of your target you can max the throttle again and if you are on a stable course and pointing at your destination you can save a couple of seconds , if that's your thing.
6 mm is quite close though, you might want to put 4 pips into shields at that point. Unless if you mean by "saving a couple of seconds" you mean "respawn at the station". ;)

No, once the speed drops into the blue, no matter how far from the station, you can set throttle to max, yes you will overspeed a little, but by the time the distance drops into the correct range you will be in the blue on throttle again, and the moment the message comes up you exit, you have to hit it right away though or you will either miss it and the circle will slide off the screen, or you as you say a sudden object will intervene. I have hit max throttle as far away as .12ls from my FC and still exited safely.

I was just making a joke on the 6 mm, 6 Mm on the other hand is quite fine to save a few seconds.
 
I only played with a couple of times but as far as I remember supercruise assist works by keeping you at 75% power for the whole journey.
If you like slow and stately progress surely you can do this manually and not bother with the module ??

Just a thought - I've never tried it.
