Exploration data gone by killing

You know the game design needs a makeover when the accepted advice to avoid getting killed is to "disable" multi-player, i.e. switch to Solo. :p
Not always though. Many games have different difficult settings, of which the highest is very deadly. Like legendary in Halo, or survival in NMS. I've started to see Solo as easy mode and Open as dangerous mode, where griefers are part of making the game really difficult. It is what it is, nothing more or less, and I choose to play which mode that suits me.

It isn't just about difficulty though. My internet connection has times when it's erratic and unstable (and I'd switch ISPs in a heartbeat, if there were any others in my area), and during said times I can't play in open play. (Nor would I wish to inflict my jitter on others, heh.) With solo mode's very low requirements, I can still keep playing and not be booted from the game servers nearly as often. It does make the game easier if you want to avoid players in "hot" areas, but it also makes the game more accessible, to players with worse internet connections.

A game without the risk of loss is worthless, but unfortunatly for explorers they lose far more than easily gained back credits or cargo that other professions are inconvienced with.

What if we had a utility slot module called 'data probe' or something with a miniature FSD that could send the exploration data back to UC. With maybe 3 charges, so it would mitigate the risk, but not eliminate it. Heck, you could hot-key it so if you got jumped by pirates, or got in somewhere you were about to die from heat, you could launch it as a last resort.

There's already precedent for this, except they don't actually take the daya anywhere - "survey data cache" salvage items. Which apparently NPC pilots are allowed to drop but players aren't; perhaps the Pilots' Federation forbids its members from doing so because it would encourage explorer-ganking even more?

There's also a problem with data drones outside of game balance (that is, encourage you to return and interact with the inhabited galaxy) - there is a minimum size for a ship with an FSD, thrusters, and a fuel scoop, which is basically what you're describing. SLF's can't mount a FSD. But they do have life support and weapons to deal with, so I'd posit the minimum hyperspace-capable drone would be only slightly smaller than a fighter. No explorer is going to carry a useless data drone the size of a Condor on the off chance he gets attacked or sucked into a star.

Plus, if you've got automated, hyperspace-capable data couriers, it's not a big leap to replace the hard drive with a warhead and you have automated, hyperspace-capable munitions…
