Exploration & Visual Experience in VR, what to pick (if to pick)

Hello Commanders,

Commander Jamsus here from Italy. I'm playing Elité since... a bit of time, and i'm very happy on my curved 32"\2k - quite ready for Odissey too.
I'm playing on a Ryzen 3600X, 16GB DDR4 3200MHz, RTX 2070 & stuff goes great with everything on ultra.
I love this game, and i would love to completely turn off from the rest of the world and stay in space sometimes. And even if my big monitor with the Saitek x52 pro is quite an experience, sometimes i would love to "live" there, to be more immersed. I've read a lot about VR & Elité so...

I had the possibility to try two VR from two friends, an older HTC Vive & a newer Quest 2 (on a 3070).

With the older HTC Vive the experience was a bit strange, because the jump-down in resolution was quite noticeable and the text hard to read.
On the Quest 2, instead, the experience was pretty better even if i didnt get the complete sense of immersion i was "hyped" from friends on Elité Dangerous.
I'm not worried about the "tunnel" effect, i mean, i'm trying to pretend to have a space helmet so it can also help with immersion too, but the main point for me was the Sweet Spot.

I think i have about 7.0 IPD, and my friend with Quest 2 didnt have the Elité Strap, so i had to "press" with my hands the Quest 2 on my face to get a bit more Sweet Spot.

My interest with a VR set is to enjoy the experience. Stay there 1-2 hours "turning off" the real world. I got no interest in other VR games as i get sick as hell, but with Elité this dont happen due to the fact that you are in a cockpit and it is like having a screen in front of you.

So, after this verbose premise, i would like to ask in your opinion what could be an adeguate VR set for this purpose: enjoy Elité Dangerous also as a "space simulator", with a bit more Sweet Spot. Could be the Quest 2 if the elite strap on head can contribute on that, but i dont know if there are other good VR sets around that are more suitable for a about 7.0 IPD. I dont know if there are some other VR sets with a better sweet spot due to a bigger lens or FOV or resolution (like the PIXMAs), but i would like a feedback if they are really a dealbreaker.

For now i have a 2070 RTX, probably will upgrade in the future (3070\3080) and in general let's not place a price limit for now, i'm just curious from your experience as it is something i'm trying to evaluate seriously before buying.

Thanks a lot commanders, have a nice 2021 and fly safe!

If money was no problem I would get a Pimax 8k X and a 3080 to run it on. That huge field of view really makes a difference in immersion, the resolution is second to none, and it has enough picture frequency to keep everything smooth.

For elite or sims
I think Reverb G2. Esp with the simple modification to the gasket which seems to increase the FOV slightly.
Also, G2 has a physical IPD slider.

If you are worried about FOV, and you have lots of money and want a well rounded experience. Valve index. OK built in speakers, wider FOV than the other standard HMDs, not bad visuals and best-in-class tracking.

I love my Q2 and literally wouldnt swap it, even for the two I have recommended above!
Why aren't I recommending you try it, even with Elite strap?
If your IPD is 70, then Quest 2 might be just be out. Being slightly under IPD is passable but being slightly over is less forgiving. :(
Also, the elite strap might not be in your favour. With the standard strap you can tighten it until your head implodes. I think the elite strap has a minimum, especially if it is like the Rift S. My kids can wear Q2 using default strap but they had to wear caps under the Rift and RiftS because their heads were too small. So if you could tighten the vanilla close enough to your face and it still wasn't good enough to get the sweet-spot, you might be out of luck. Not sure though.

Thanks commanders for your insights. I was lucky enough to try Elité in a Quest 2 AND in a G2 in these days, and there is no nice FOV\sweet spot for my head\nose\IPD there. A bit more in the G2 it seems, but i think that could have been the amazing resolution. But, i've been also luck enough (due to a missed second hand Valve Index) to purchase a second hand super well kept Quest 1 (tried it before) and i was amazed.

Yes, the resolution was a bit less valuable (even if with 1.5x hmd or supersampling things gets smoothier) but i see EVERYTHING on focus, it is incredible. I can stand still with head, look around, and see stuff in focus. Dont know exactly why, because if it was only for IPD i should see stuff out of focus when i move it to lower values, but they remain in focus and i get just a bit more dazing effect. Probably is a mix of lens position & headset shape + strap. Now all the FOV is a sweet spot, and that is quite incredible. Plus: black levels & contrast are really appreciable, and having spent 230€ i can now focus (for the next year) on the hunt for a more powerful video card!

Probably the index could have been better in general, but the price tag on this one was too convenient and i checked out.

Ps: zero nausea in space, a miracle (on SRV i want to die)

Thanks everyone for the suggestions!

i've done it and honestly it helped, still very poorly used to that kind of movement so i just watch where i have to go, close eyes and move xD

It might also be performance problems in the SRV, since planetary stuff is more power hungry, and the surface provides points of reference for the head to feel "off"

Try really low settings for a change and see if the nausea is gone, then gradually build up to the desired balance
