Release [Explorer's Application] Captain's Log

Hen Genar I don't know if you are interested in looking into it but it seems with the Window's 10 anniversary update CL will keep the taskbar up over ED all the time. I know there is the hide button just wanted to make you aware.

Doesn't look like there's anything I can do about that. I just spent an hour in Google looking, and it seems it's a Windows 10 problem.

Just use the taskbar checkbox in Captain's Log to disable the taskbar. When you exit CL, the taskbar will be re-enabled.

Now, if someone were to show me a Windows API call to disable this Taskbar Stay On Top, I could incorporate that into CL.

Thanks man that's what I've been doing. At first i thought it was a bunch of full screen applications but actually it was CL doing it even when the overlay was minimized. All was fine till this Windows 10 update :-(

Sneak Peek : v2.0.0 Beta

Just to let y'all know I've not been sitting back twiddling my thumbs these last few weeks :)

I've been busy ripping the still-beating heart out of Captain's Log and replacing it with a new, better, cybernetic upgrade.

I'm hoping it will be ready in time for 2.2 to go live - no promises, but my team of programmers (comprising of me) are hard at work on it.

Thanks once again to CMDR Psieonic for providing icons for Materials which with the help of RMunk are made with a palette kind to the colourblind.

Anyway here's a screenshot -note the layout is not yet finalised, LOTS is still missing from the UI, but it's already beginning to become useful in recording jumps and giving an instant at-a-glance display of available materials once you have DSS-scanned a landable planet.

That looks pretty and functional. Some questions:

- Is this information entered automatically from the new 2.2 logs?
- Do you have facilities to connect to EDSM or any plans if not?
- Can you use the existing history information from the logs or do you have to start from scratch filling the database?

Thanks :)

Some questions:

- Is this information entered automatically from the new 2.2 logs?

From 2.2 onwards it's entirely automatic - as of today I have the planets table automatically filling in and displaying that info each time I scan a planet with the DSS - it's awesome ;)

- Do you have facilities to connect to EDSM or any plans if not?

Previous versions of Captain's Log did not have this, but I intend to have this sort of thing in for version 2 and onwards!

- Can you use the existing history information from the logs or do you have to start from scratch filling the database?

The information available before 2.2 was extremely limited and required manual input to the point where inputting anything other than the planet/star type and its designation made for boring un-fun times.

I am considering trying to write a routine which would try to convert the old Captain's Log databases into the all-new DB format, but given the above, given that some people might have been using "lazy mode" to auto-assign a designation number which doesn't resemble the real planet or star designation, and given the data which is absent from the old versions of the game and hence Captain's log pre2.0 , then I doubt an import function would be viable, if possible at all.

So assume that as from CL 2.0.0 onwards (and ED 2.2 onwards), we're all starting fresh.

Do note though that CL2.0 onwards will be using an entirely different database folder, such that you will be able to still use CL 1.x as well as CL 2.x

Hope those were comprehensive enough answers!

What I am interested is to have the history of the star systems I've visited pre-2.2. I wasn't using Captain's Log so this information is either in the existing game logs or EDSM. Even without any planetary information, just having the systems as well as the notes I've entered would be awesome. Hope this makes sense?

It makes perfect sense. :)

I've got absolute tonnes of things to do before I can even start on the syncing-with-other-things part of it. Once I get the innards sorted out again I'll make a start on that.

Is there a way I can change the keybinding for taken a screen shot in Captains Log?

Captain's Log doesn't take screenshots - those are done by the game itself.

What CL does is detect the new screenshot file generated by the game, and convert it to either JPG or PNG format (from the original and buly BMP format the game generates), and optionally uploads the images to Imgur.

I have no idea if you can change the screenshot hotkey in the game.

Regards.

Incidentally, you can take screenshots from other applications - I use for example MSI Afterburner to take screenshots - as, unlike the in-game screenshot facility, MSI Afterburner will also include any graphical effects added via EDFX or any of the other GFX effects applications.

You can also program your own screenshot hotkey in MSI Afterburner.

Also you can tell it to save the screenshot in the same directory that Captain's Log is monitoring, which will then do the convert-and-upload-to-Imgur thing.

I seem to have upon a wee problem with CL keeping stats upto date. I suspected it a while back but have now started to record into a spreadsheet and....well..I seem to have fewer planets today than yesterday;

If I export to CSV and do a sum, then the total is quite different to what the CL GUI is showing

Any advice?

Feedback on the version 2 I just read about :)
You might well have this covered already but it would be useful I think to show if a system is 'green' or only has j1/j2. Just thinking of saving the mental gymnastics required ;)

Could it be possible for v2 to open v1 db's as read only? Appreciate the wealth of info being introduced that makes it impractical for an import etc, but it would be useful to load up the previous DB's without needing to keep a separate install of the old version of the program kicking around.

Hi there!

I saw your report about the statistics being different between the displayed and exported stuff - I'm not going to do anything about that due to converting CL to play nicely with the Player Journal - hope you understand :)

As for loading up old DB's - no promises, but I'll see what I can do - there may be a period of time where you'll need the old and new versions installed until I get around to being able to view them in v2.x - re-programming Captain's Log for the upcoming 2.2 is proving to be an interesting and extremely time-consuming affair - I've already put in an inordinate amount of man-hours into the task (and there's only a team of one ;) ) - I'm actually getting exhausted trying to get this done in time for 2.2 going live :)

I'm already thinking about things like Jumponium - watch this space.

Anyway here's a screenie of the latest WIP whilst I'm here. Not the final layout but you get the idea...

I'm trying to use CL after being away from the game for a few months, and I keep getting this error when starting up the program:

I'm unable to start the program at all, and uninstalling/reinstalling has no affect.

CL can't open the database file - says it right there at the bottom of the error message :)

It looks like it's trying to create the values.db - which is a database of the star and planet types, and their values.

Therefore it looks like CL doesn't have permission to create files in the directory it's trying to do so.

If CL was running in that configuration before, then Something Has Changed between when you last ran CL, and now.

You can try reconfiguring CL by removing the configuration file called CaptainsLog.INI - but before you do, take a look in that file (it's a text file) and see where you have your CL directories configured, then check to see if you have read/write permission, and/or if it's pointing to the correct location - the config file is pretty straightforward to understand.

CaptainsLog.INI is located in %localappdir%\CaptainsLog

I noticed that CL was not updating my database, so I checked the log file location. No problem. I just click "Configure" and go to the "Miscellaneous" tab. Click "Reconfigure ED/CL Directories" and sure enough, it is not set to the correct Log file directory.

I paste the correct location into the field and ... there is no "Confirm" option, just a "Cancel" button. Strange. I know I've changed the log file location in the past. I hit cancel, then go back to make sure the change was saved, and of course, it was not. Okay, so I click "Select", navigate over to the correct directory, click on "Select Folder" and get a message "The selected location seems fine." Excellent!

But ... still nothing but a "Cancel" button. I know I've done this before and had it work, so I click "Cancel". Click on "Reconfigure ED/CL Directories" again to make sure the update was saved... Nope! As one would expect "Cancel" cancelled my changes.

What am I missing?

Thanks!
