Explorers: (how) do you keep track of systems you've visited?

So I've been out exploring, visited 760 systems so far (I'd guess I'm still pretty much a newbie at this point), but apart from a small number of really notable systems (Betelgeuse, VY Canis Majoris, Wezen aka Delta Canis Majoris) I have no record of systems I've visited or details on anything I've found there (not to mention things like distance traveled). Do you keep some kind of record of all places you've visited and discoveries there, and if so, how do you keep track of all this?

I don't. For the most part. I have a notebook where I write down the names of systems with life bearing worlds, black holes, etc.

Simple answer: I don't.

Longer answer: I'm hoping the game to implement accessible exploration logs / ability to generate a log some day. For the time being, I'm not too concerned, the galaxy is vast, and chances of me going somewhere exactly the same route as before very, very low.

...and if you're wondering what the "Man in the Nebula" note is all about, it's this:

I think from the start FD should have added 'Discovered by ........' to the System Map for all un-occupied systems. Or.... a 'visited' or 'explored' (by the player) filter to the Galaxy Map

i'm not a huge explorer but i play elite with a simple notepad by me. i record relevant information in categories. that's how i'd handle it here.

That dudes photo up above is a pretty awesome example.

I just remember the relative positions of the stars around me of which ones I've already visited and the ones I plan on going to next. Also, if you've been to a system, the System Map button will light up for it when in the Galaxy Map.

I started out keeping a list, but gave up. I've explored over 3,500 systems now, and I can't see any point in making a note of them all - if it's out in the deep dark and has a white system icon on the galmap then I know I've been there :)

I do take a screenshot of the system view data for anything that is particularly noteworthy, as well as a screenshot of the object itself.

Yeah, I too hope all the statistics that are obviously already being recorded will someday become available to us. I was kinda hoping there'd be some (semi-)automated method to keep track as keeping separate notes isn't particularly practical when using a Rift (and I'd kinda like to know how many CFT and Earth-likes i've run across, guesstimating it at 25-30 CFTs so far)

I have developed my own tool (just php + sql DB) to keep track on explored systems (tracking separate stations, stars and planets) . However it willbe nice if FD implement some filter in galaxy map for fully/partially searched systems

Notepad/or your-text-editor-of-choice - handy for jotting down interesting finds, too. In some cases also using php to construct "live tracker" of sorts...

I mix prospecting with my exploration, and I mark systems with Pristine Metal Rings on Sticky Notes on my second monitor. These are Desktop app notes, not actual sticky notes.

Hopefully the proposed API will allow developers to pull detailed system information after you've discovered and scanned objects in a system. I'd love to keep some useless but detailed database of my travels. A 3D plot of the route of the trip is only the beginning.
