Explorers: (how) do you keep track of systems you've visited?

I take screen shots of everything.
Which is pretty awful as a quick reference but sort of interesting to flick through.
I should probably use pen and paper or a spreadsheet to note things of interest.
I would love FD to implement some sort of basic flight log and/or marker system - that seems to be low down the list of priorities however.

I have huge folders full of screenshots dedicated to different things. Easiest way to keep track of stuff.

Thanks Mr. Necro for pointing out that this fundamental design problem has persisted for a YEAR.

This.

I'd love to see this implemented, and have often wondered why it wasn't it Elite from the beginning. I've logged about 4500 systems so far, and I think it would be great to go back and see all of the data concerning first discoveries, etc.

With Captain's Log of course! ;)

You don't.

Not even sure they log it. So if you didnt pen and paper it or rely on some 3rd party tool you have no past history.
The Game does know if you have been in a system before since it on a second visit does not count the system towards the total System Visited Statistics. So the Data is somewhere.

Seriously, folks. We're supposedly traveling in a vehicle that requires tons of computerization simply to survive, much less jump system to system. And some of you are suggesting we should keep tabs of visited systems in a notebook?! With a PENCIL?! Do you guys pull out a sundial when you need to know the time?

And as to why I need to know, I'm trying to get an 'in' with one of the Engineers and I need to travel 300LY from my starting point. So I need to see the visited systems in the Galactic Map so that I can figure what direction I need to follow. Notebook can't tell me that.

I think there should be a button on the Galactic Map screen that has a button labeled 'BTDT' (Been there, done that.) Or whatever you want to call it. It would simply highlight the systems you've already hit. This would be a ridiculously easy feature to add. I know the software already remembers what systems we've visited (you'll never have to buy planetary data for the same system twice).

So, c'mon Frontier! Don't do it only because we want it (though that'd be nice), do it because ships as advanced as the ones we use would, of course, have that very basic capability. You know, like having bathrooms.

Ngurii, where you buy the Soontil Relics you need to visit Elvira, is 218 ly from the starter system. All you need to do is put a bookmark on Ngurii and another on LHS 3447, then target a system slightly further out. The info page on your ship will also tell you how far from the start you have travelled.

...and if you're wondering what the "Man in the Nebula" note is all about, it's this:

nice game interface ! It looks so good that i believed thats a real.
But guys the interafce and game support for explorers is just missing in the game. Why game doesent fillter the visited systems or ever explored systems on the map ? Im waiting to FD add this to galaxy map.

If you visit Felicity Farseer first (after getting the meta-alloys) you will have traveled over 300ly from your starting point.

Dude!way to necro a thread from January 2015.... THAT'S why everyone was suggesting pen and paper, there were no 3rd party tools yet.

Eddiscovery is one of the best tools for recording where you've been, but it doesn't have any planet logging facility like captain's log. However, it cannot retroactively pick up your past history because FDEV do not make that available.*

* if for some reason you enabled verbose logging after every ED patch, you CAN retroactively record your history.
