Exploring and Mining?

I have found two deliciously lovely mining places!!! They are full of rich metals every time I go there:

  • 20 Ophiuchi Planet 6 (A Ring)
  • Jura Planet 7 (A Ring)

This is what mining there looks like:

Typically I am going out in a Python with 250t of hold space full of limpets. I have a controller that lets me have 2 collectors out, and 1 prospector. Last trip I came back with 34t of gold, 25t of palladium, 16t of platinum, 9t of painite, and "assorted other stuff" I use the prospector drones liberally while the collectors are pulling in chunks and with the power plant on my Python I can just mash down on the mining laser and mine an asteroid without having to pause. I have the collector controller that keeps 2 controllers running for 8 minutes or so, so I go through a lot more prospector launches than collectors.

I've been dropping into the A ring (that's the one that's usually metallic) at random spots including the back edge, very inner edge, and outer edge. It does not appear that the distribution of goodies has anything to do with where you are in the A ring. I've also sampled a variety of sizes of 'roids including small ones that look shiny, big ones that look dirty, fast-spinning ones and slow-spinning and immobile ones. That does not appear to make the least bit of difference. They all drop more or less the same stuff in the same zone.

Dang, there is a system named Jura? I will have to go there and drink single malt while writing a novel based in a dystopian future. Hopefully without catching TB.

I like the whole hit and miss things with mining... well I prefer the hits obviously :)
But I like it when "Some days are Painite, Some days are Gold" It adds those bingo moments when you hit a good roid. Its the exploration part of mining, maybe this next one, or this one.... That's why I get worried people start requesting Scanners and other things to tell you exactly whats out there and where.
If that ever happens then mining will lose some of its magic for me.

Oh BTW I am now 59 mill towards my Python miner. If I sold my A-class Mining Asp and A class Vulture I could prolly upgrade, but I prefer to keep those two fundamental ships in case something bad happens when I become a newbie python pilot. Also If for some reason I cant afford to keep it as I hear running costs are high, I don't have to worry about refitting a smaller vessel all over again.

Consider the Clipper. While I think the ship stinks, that Size 7 slot with a 128 Cargo in it makes it a good miner, and a lot cheaper than a Python. Add in how Imperials hate it being used for such low life occupation, it has to be a winner.

Thanks Dommarraa, but while the thought of grabbing such a beautiful ship and turning it into a mining barge (and upsetting the imperials) does appeal to me, I don't want to have to become an imperial lackey to get one. Also I am about as far away from imperil space as I can get. If they were on the lower right of the bubble I am at the extreme upper left. Nothing imperial for hundreds of LY.

If you've traveled 10Klie+ then the bubble is like a flyspeck ;)
Anyway, if you didnt allready rank up with the empire i'ed go for the phyton, doing some trade runs to get the cash us much faster than ranking up (im doing it right now cause i want some luxury while mining ;) and its slooooooooooooooooooooooooow, 50missions to get to squire, and allready 50 missions now and still no rank mission to get to knight/lord - whatever is next)

I will have you know, gentlemen, that I read your comment to my butler, who is still catatonic.
He insists on having his team give my Clipper a full detailing every time I file a flight-plan, and I'm afraid that the idea of a refinery sitting on the hand-knotted berber wool carpet in Compartment 5... was just too much for him.

Kitted out an ASP for mining / exploration last night and went only 300ly out to try it out.

I found a pristine metal-rich ring. While I found a few osmium, gold and silver the rest was all minerals.

I have a few questions about mining:

1. Is there a was of telling what type of ore before firing at it?
2. How many collection limpets do you take (I have 64 tonne cargo)?
3. Why so much minerals in a metal-rich ring?
4. What's the Type-7 like for exploration as I can get more cargo in it?

Thanks in advance

1. Get a Prospector Limpet Controller. If I dont have one, I just blast of a couple of chunks then check the Contacts tab
2. With a Prospector, I would fill up. Without, 40-50
3. You will be wanting Metalic instead of Metal Rich
4. No Idea

I've also got no idea, but someone managed to fly a Type-7 to Sag A* for the Buckyball Run.

Seriously though, if you can afford it (and have the rank) a clipper is a much more versatile ship with similar jump range to the Type-7, for not too much more. And it's as good a blockade runner as the cobra when you need to fetch your goods back home - unlike the type-7 which is a flying coffin.

I unfortunately curently lack the rank for a clipper. :(

oooh. exciting times for us dullard miners, our very own CG!

Luckily only half my hold is full of Painite so I'll be stocking up on Osmium this evening. Still haven't found a pristine ringed HMC/MR.

Me either, I'm not sure I want to rank up with the Imperials. Currently dumping all my data in Fed systems to get allied with them
Fair enough. :)

I'm planning to increase my Empire rank at least enough for the Imp Courier, as it looks like a great ship for the shorter range Buckyball races - and so I might keep doing missions until I get access to the Clipper as well, as it's a great ship. I'm not likely to take things any further than that though - I'd rather keep all of settled space friendly to me if possible. :D

If you're planning to do lots of exploring, it's not worth getting your Major Faction rank above 'Friendly' any more in 1.3 due to Reputation decay.

When I left for Sag A*, before 1.3 dropped I had 'Allied' reputation with all three major factions, but by the time I returned (three weeks after 1.3) all three had changed to Friendly. I don't think that the rep decay affects minor faction repution, so the individual minor factions that I'd been most active for should still be allied to me.

Finaly have a mining python

Yay! I made it. Mined my Asp off and made it to 80 mill, So decided to take the plunge and buy and outfit Mining Python.
I was very conscious about making sure I would leave enough cash to cover insurance (several times over (although I could get 13mill for my mining asp if needed) Spent a bit of time upgrading and outfitting it to a minimal standard.
I have to be wary of the jump distance when I outfit it, need to keep it above 14.7 fully laden so I can jump from a high tech to my mining site.
Took it out to a res and mined for a while, then went low res and eventually high res. Was able to hold my own against a 3 wing of small deadly ships at the high res but lost shields and took a few percent damage before I killed the last one. But felt OK to stay there .

Man I new they were not agile but my ASP is faster in YAW than the python's max turn rate hehe.

Still. I made it now have to decide whether it was worth spending the 80mill and will I make more than that back in a reasonable time.

Has motivated me to buy my first paint job.

found a hmc planet with metallic ring, checked 64 roids with prospectors, took 64 screenshots and looks like it yields similar to any other metallic ring, on average 8/9 chunks came off when i shot roids with 2 class2 lasers
