Exploring : What a blast and relaxing

When does your wind shield start to crack ? Is it just wear and tear that does it ?

Also trying to work out how to repair power unit, mine is at 95% so loads left, but interested. I might try out of SC, powering everything off and see if I can repair it, but I guess the auto repair needs power and so would be a chicken and egg moment. Will give it a go when I have returned and sold my data.

Mine started to crack about 2 weeks out. It didn't spread much though, the cracks stayed along the edges. Afterwards I still super cruised 0.75ly to a neighbouring system as a test, it didn't crack any further. My ship integrity was down to 0% though when I got home. It might be heat damage that cracks the windshield.
I got back just before 1.1 after 4 weeks out. At least on my trip you could not repair the power unit, can't turn it off either. It was down to 88%, no harmful effects. My hull was down to 68%. Btw be careful powering down everything. Keeping life support on alone isn't enough. I nearly froze to death. At least the game gave me that impression after the windows all froze up and it said atmosphere restored when I powered up the engines again.
Currently I'm enjoying flying around civilization. Trading is fun again, I missed the risky docking maneuvers. The T7 actually handles better than my Asp. I have enough money for a Clipper now, but I see I need to be baron? I haven't fired a single shot yet in this game, I guess if I want that ship I'll have to give up my pacifist approach? The only naval progression mission I can find is kill the same guy in different systems, no matter at which end of known space I happen to be. (Is that guy following me??)
I want to go to the core for my next exploration trip. I was thinking of taking an Anaconda, but I doubt I can stay in civilized space that long. Distant planets are calling me.

Awesome stories gents and inspiring me to set off again to a lesser known region when I get back in a few days, maybe tonight.

I agree with the OP, its relaxing and a great way to get "lost" in our galaxy. I've really just stared it in my newly aquire Asp, but I'm still discovering things in civilized space as I save up for the best FSD. Can't wait to really get out there!

Welcome to the fold Cmdr. Get a A Class FSD and with D rated items you should be looking at 35ly range or thereabouts. Good luck in your adventures :)

I've also taken a break from trading and fighting to go walkabout. I've taken my Asp as far away from the galactic plane as I can go. Looking down upon the galaxy from deep space, especially using a DK2, the sense of solitude was palpable. In fact I've seen so many amazing sights on my voygage; completely forgetting that I'm actually sat in a comfy chair with a plastic box strapped to my face!

You don't. Just log out. I typically find a planet that's interesting and drop out of SC with it in the viewscreen. (Don't go so close it drops you out itself!) Then just 'Save and Exit.'

yup to fully answer the question, if you do this when you log back in again you are in normal space in the system you logged out from. This happens across the board in ED. There is no need to dock, but this is not advisable in civilised space as you may logon again and have NPC/ Players on top of you when you spawn. Out in the sticks, no NPC's and very rare to find other players.

Close call. Back from work, into system I left in last night. Scan 2 binary planets and very very nearly smacked into one of them. Quick joystick reactions saved me.

Phew, nearly 5 days wasted there.

About 580ly from home, scanning a new system and spotted my 1st USS for ages. Must be nearing civilisation and almost a time to break from the 5 ly hops to 35ly ones to find the nearest station to sell data :)

Getting close to home and making mistakes. Fell into a star and took another 2% hull damage down to 95% now. Glad I took loads of heat sinks to drop one and SC out.

Woohoo I made it back.

Had my 1st USS contact about 600ly out from Founders and then nothing for about 50ly on the inward journey. Then suddenly there was a Clipper on the next jump and so I keep an eye on him as I explore the system. 10 minutes later, yup he swung around and interdicted me. Easy escape for me in the Asp.

Next system and more NPC's and again they are swarming over me.

I am Allied with the Aliance and Fed and Friendly with the Empire and I swear the most dangerous places to be are on the fridges of civilisation. The NPC's are very aggressive towards you which is kinda cool and after 5 days of exploring, got the old blood boiling.

What followed was a mad dash at full 35ly jumps into known space, looking for a station or outpost to land at. Typical I hit a large row of Type T stars and no scoping and I am starting to panic. 1 more decent jump and I will have to stop in bad space and work out where to find a star to scoop from and avoid the NPC's. All I can say is thank god I took that 450p/s scoop with me, scoop and dash.

Luckily next star was in a new region and back to scoopables and suddenly I am in Federation Space and green NPC's around me and relative safety.

Ok may as well head to founders world and set course.

This has taken about 1 hour and the beers are starting to take there effect, I really am busting for a wee and Jameson station is approaching. The closer I get, the more I have to cross my legs as is always the case when the end is closing and your are busting.

At least I remember how to dock after all this time away and now I am sat in Jameson station.

Going to make a video on the data, selling, the state of my ship, the trip I did etc to help other wannabe explorers out and what to expect when they return :)

Since Gamma I stayed away from exploring due to the fear of the bugs. But since V1.1 I have made enough credits with my T9 to buy an additional fully kitted out Asp for exploration and I am about 5 days into my voyage of the near by Nebula's

I have visited quite a few along the way and I am currently at the Horsehead Nebula, one that I have imaged many times from my backyard telescope.

Exploration is amazing, the colours once you get out to the nebula's, the views, the relaxation of being out there alone brings a whole new meaning to ED. One that buzzing around the common areas just doesn't show. There is so much more to ED than just trading and flying between the same stations, or hanging around nav points bounty hunting. Yes I have done all of these since gamma and I needed a change and I am so glad I did.

400 billion systems : Well I will tell you now, go near the nebula's on the galaxy map and you will be surprised how many of them have already been bagged by players. I have visited over 600 systems in 4 days and have only found 5 systems that no-one has been too. Granted, I am visiting the popular nebula regions, but the Orion Nebula has over 2000 systems and all of them have pretty much been discovered by someone. Quite amazing and I guess in 12 months time you will have to travel very far and very remote to bag a new system for yourself. One of the reasons I set off now exploring to get my name on some systems.

I am doing quite well, no major issues once I got past the Plieades region with interdictions and haven't seen a NPC for 300 systems now.

I use the Oculus DK2 and the views are amazing, having to drop to a flat screen to take this pictures was painful :)

A few piccies of the HorseHead region. Rendered amazingly well and just as I imagined.

So I urge you, getting bored of ED and the grind ? Need a change ?

Kit out an Asp and set off out and see what more ED has to offer. Who knows a few weeks later when you reach civilisation again, they may have added more features :)

Indeed it is great! :) I just returned yesterday from my farthest trip so far at Barnard's Loop (through Witch Head Nebula). I netted ~3.3mil and a LOT of bonus for first discoveries.

I always feel great getting there, brilliant when I am at the destination and then want to hurry back to sell the data. But this time, once I got close to populated space, I had 3-4 interdictions per systems at the point where exploring there is just annoying. Today I just had a trip where I scanned ~10-15 systems with White Dwarfs in them in the populated systems. I think I may take a break and do some bounty hunting and then find my next destination and wander off once again, to another adventure!

Unfortunately the video failed, well the sound did.

Overall, 5000ly in 5 - 6 days and 73% integrity costing 173k to fix. Visited about 300 systems and found about 30 new ones gaining me about 2mil credits in total when I came to sell.

Got quite a few 1st discoveries as well, loving the new sell options in ED :)

Going to go out again sometime soon, somewhere less explored and off the beaten track I hope.
