Exploring

I have been playing a while and unlocked prof Palin, so thought it is a good idea to use my asp and leap off to meet the 5000 ly from start. I modified the outfitting a bit and off I went yesterday.
Now I am 1400 ly away and tons of new discoveries, but I am realising my errors, my mass is too heavy, I kept military hull which is 40 ton, as I didn't want to crash land, and some other things, I didn't really need, wish I brought a 2nd AFU, but so far am OK with 97 %hull, and an srv for mats. But my range is 25ly, which is ok, I am zig zagging a bit down the main arm from sol, staying in the stars.
Most tricky thing to decide is which planets to detail scan. If more than 5000 Ls from system sun, I don't generally bother. While I am scanning main star, I check the system map, but the visual (and audio) clue to planet type is not clear to me. Is it worth scanning moons, have to get real close to them.
I guess there is nowhere to change outfitting or hand in scan data. Hillary Depot is long way from me and not sure they have these services. Probably griefers on that route too? So I will plod along visiting nebula on the way. Fingers crossed. Occasionally I see uss, but too scared to visit. Might be pirates?
Any advice for me, maybe after this trip, I will make a dedicated asp explorer and a general multi task one or buy a vulture.
Interesting exploring experience....I have a 6A fuel scoop and top rated 5A Fsd and 5A thruster, only 1 fuel tank (not sure if really need 2), 2A beam laser, chaff, heat sink and point defence (why? Maybe aliens), can heat sink ammo be replenished? Lists as ammo, but not sure which type. Anyway let's see... Lots of yellow and red discs in this galaxy!

When selecting planets to scan, go for those that are either very obvious water worlds (should be very easy to eye judge) or go for the planets in the sweet spot of the star system (dpending whether the star class is F, G or K) to look for terraformable worlds.
For class G stars, this is usually somewhere within 500-700 ls, for clas K it's less and class F it's a little more. Featureless white and pinkish bodies are almost always valueless (rocky)ice worlds, so always skip them.
USS can be "scanned" by targetting them which wil display a threat level, if it's 0, you won't meet anything, if it's 1, it's usually just a few low ranked pirates. Threat level 4 should only be entered if you are looking for trouble.

Not really errors unless you're looking for a pure speed run to 5k and back.

I'm in a fully fit Anaconda that's carrying 2 SRVs, 2 fighters, a full weapons load and some extras and am about 4k LY out from the bubble just putting along at my own 23ly jump range. People are so used to jumping 30-50ly that all of the inbetween systems get skipped over. ;)

Took a while, many missions available in proycon, there are 4 sirius stations, bit of trek but you stack up, avoid assassination missions as timing is tight.
Good luck.

So a few notes:
The outposts along the way to Colonia don't have outfitting.
Most outposts are really quiet, the real griefers are at Jaques area itself. I wouldn't hesitate to go to the outposts in Open, I'd still keep my head on a swivel though and perhaps have the bandwidth counter on screen to see if players enter the instance.

Its usually better on a first trip to make it small and (as you already have) learn the errors and find out if you enjoy exploring. Get back, hand in the data and decide if you want to go for round #2

There's a ton of amazing places in easy reach of the bubble, this thread has but a few: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/338439-The-Veil-West-one-the-greatest-nebula

And I can give you a good few more "sights everyone should see". If you want any tips on those give me a shout. :)

Update, am now 3700 ly out from the bubble, 91% hull, 85% afms, 92% power plant, all heat sinks accidentally used (see heat sink thread). Took in some nebula but veered off from the dotty NGC 7822 as limited jump range. Nebula route had less discoveries so now putting some miles in 200 ly above the bubble. Some nice srv distraction, found polonium arsenic termenium. Just found my first discovery Elw and understanding more where they may occur. T tauri are annoying, look like refulable but not. No blaxk holes yet, plenty of water world's.
Found a large cache of data today so cargo is full (only 8 t) and running cool with Shields, srv, wepons offline until needed.
Now how will I get back to the bubble safely?

Methods of 'what to scan' are really up to you. For my part, I follow a simple formula:

1. Ping the system
2. Scan the star
3. Whilst that is scanning, check the system map for water worlds, earth-like worlds or ammonia earth-like worlds (or Black Holes and Neutrons, but you tend to know about those before you jump in)
4. Scan all bodies within scan range of the jump in point
5. Travel to, scan any of those high value bodies
6. If the system is unexplored, and has high value bodies, scan the whole system. (If it is just single water worlds I may not bother these days)

Ty do you keep 4 pips to systems, or to eng?
I keep to sys to prevent star heat damage, not sure effect

My advice on Exploring is

Make sure you've got an ADS DSS, then I tend to scan most things apart from Asteriod belts & Ice/Rock worlds.

Don't worry about your jump range - I went to Beagle Point 12 months ago in a 27ly Asp.

When returning, don't travel towards or in the bubble in Open mode, go solo or group mode to avoid the kiddies.

If you've a lot of data & don't need it for opening up an engineer then chose a low risk, edge of the bubble system to return to, I had Caucuma as my 'home' base for exploration, Fu station is less than 100ls from main star. By seliing enough data to become allied with all factions in that system, I then moved to close by systems & became allied with a 'bubble' around Caucuma.

I don't do pewpew, have a low combat rank (Novice) & have never pledged in PP. Now I found that as long as I had no cargo then I could could plot a route through the bubble to my destination using 0 population systems*. I always got there without interference from NPC's.

*Iv noticed today though, that I can't now use population as a filter, when plotting in the Galaxy map. However, using the Government filters & unchecking each type of government would be the same - When did the filter by population get removed?

These are some tips that I used when exploring & returning to 'cash-in'. That's how I play Elite, other's will do it differentiy

Because Im a non-combat cmdr, I keep 3 pips to engine, 3 to systems

On approach for a planetary landing I divert 4 pips to shields and slowly divert the rest to weapons as I get closer to the ground. I like to leave the planet with the same amount of hull integrity I had when I arrived :)

drop that cargo. Chances are higher to get interdicted when returning to the bubble when you have any cargo. It is not worth it.
Find a return system at the edge of the bubble. Again, less chance to get interdicted. CAUCUMA would be a good system to return, depending which direction you come from. It's outpost is only 17.87 Ls away, so again less chance to get interdicted.

Fly safe Cmdr

Should I sell data at nearest point or take to Palin, cant get rid of cargo rescued some poor people whose shop crashed. Dropped out powerplay that was a good idea. Don't think I will be chased out here.
Worked out when to engage high jump, when fuel scoop disengages and planet stalk on radar moves to 2nd circle away, getting faster now...

That's why I choose Caucuma, allied with every faction so head straight to Fu Station. I ALWAYS plot out a return route from the west side, so it's the first habitable to come across inbound.

Also yes, you're carrying cargo - ditch it!
