Extermination mission questions

So last night I tried an extermination mission. It ended up being at military base of some kind. I had to kill 22 members of a group and when I got there I found 4 skimmers and 4 ships. I don't mind the skimmers and NPCs, but ships?

How do you complete this mission solo?

1) Either come with a ship strong enough to be able to deal with the ship defenses, then deal with the skimmers (Goliaths are nasty)
or
2) Land 5-7 km outside the base and drive there in the SRV - but, you'll have to deal with the ships attacking your srv on the way there and then deal with the Goliaths
A Scorp SRV may help
or
3) have a strong enough ship that can survive the attacks while you use rockets to kill the Goliaths from the air, then land nearby and disembark, then dismiss your ship

I've used 2 and 3 successfully

I had no issues with accessing the base, nothing attacked me, but I didn't start the mission as I was pretty sure I was going to be killed by the ships. I don't think that there were any Goliaths either.

Been a long time since I took on a Goliath, should have brought my FAS...

Funny you made this thread because I had the exact same experience yesterday and was thinking about this. Thankfully in my case the ship stayed above the base and didn't attack me, but it did blow up my parked ship. I was in an SRV and was going around the base picking them off and I was inside the base itself, at no point did the ship attack me. As for the Goliath, it glitched into the ground and didn't react to me. The ship (an anaconda) eventually attacked me as I drove away from the base (a large military fort).

Anyway, i was able to easily avoid the ships attacks (even on foot) and I actually called an Apex taxi which whisked me away.

On the flip side I find using a ship to attack ground forces is pretty bad, you can't lock on to on foot enemy and your attacks don't seem to damage them much. The only exception is rockets, they do kill on foot enemy but it has a very small kill radius. I think its made that way on purpose so you can't bomb the crap out of a base or level the enemy team when above an on foot conflict zone.

You build one of these (it works for me but your tastes may be different), which "probably" meets all of @Northpin's scenarios set down above...

I don't recall ever having an extermination mission with air support present yet; but I would go about my business regardless. Which is: Sneak into CMD, disable the alarms, turrets and whatnots, and then murder everyone from the inside out with my completely silenced Tormentor. I'd probably dismiss my ship for safety first though. Apart from that: What could possibly go wrong?

Edit says: Maybe there was air support and I don't remember because I didn't trigger alarms, so they remained patrolling the area.

If it's a military settlement and they get alerted, you'd have a hard time going about your business.
The CAP is nasty (combat air patrol), the AA ground defenses will also shoot your ship if you fight above the settlement and the settlement itself will be defended by at least a Goliath and 1-2 smaller sentries plus a lor of guards

it's one of the hardest ground mission types

I have taken out military settlements before, but I always arrived not wanted and could dock, and I could wander about all I wanted, which seems what @Pville_Piper described above. Once you sneak into CMD, eliminate the personnel and disable alarms and defenses, things should be doable, no?

and for the record, I always sneak into CMD (or wherever the alarms are) and disable alarms and defenses even if the mission isn't explicitly covert. It's just the best way to do it.

absolutely
disabling the alarms will make sure the sentries and the ships flying CAP wont be on alert

Yeah. Doing so is a little bit harder in busy military settlements though. You need to be quick, know you way to the alarm console and best have a silenced weapon, because you have to possibly take out quite a few guards on the way there.

ive encountered missions that began with received message about a tip off, which then resulted in settlement already being hostile (red) right from the approach.

i have well armoured dropship. filled with mines just for the initial hello. i land conveniently far enough, then lure out and solve the npcs with srv and proceed like with normal mission just as described by helmut before. turn all the machines off, then turn all the people off. so far ive encountered ships un/landing that were throwing some shots at my ship/srv, but luckily both handled it well enough. parking bit further solved most problems.

NPC ships ignore infantry.

Only real example I've got on hand of a base with ships defending it:

But yeah, remove Goliaths, disembark, murder everyone.

In my experience NPC ships do not target you while you are on foot. But they do target your ship/SRV if left unattended and your action turned them hostile against you.

And as soon as you finish your business and enter any vehicle, they start shooting at you.
And you can't outrun them in a Scarab - I tried for over 30 km once and they just kept following me and shooting at me. They don't give up. At least not in my experience.

I guess an Apex or a ship that can withstand some punishment while you recall it and board it seem to be the only way how to get out of this.

It was that way in Horizons, as long as you have a ship with decent shields you can generally just run up underneath it and leave... Or destroy them. So, I figured it would be that way in odyssey. Four ships would be daunting to reboard on while receiving fire. Too bad you couldn't hack the base defenses and turn them against the NPCs!

I know the base defenses will bring in extra troops when the red alert is sounded, do they add in extra ships if you attack them?

Sorry, I don't know.
I usually do such missions in my unarmed Asp or Diamondback - I never attacked ships that are protecting a settlement (yet).
