FaceTrackNoIR Guide with PS3 Cam

Thanks!

Stumbled across this thread and made me realize I had an PSEye laying around that I had forgotten about. This is just phenomenal. Well worth the $2.99 I paid for the driver. Wow. And I don't have to wear any sort of headgear. Thanks again for the tutorial.

this thread: +1
was trying to make my C920 work with facetracking, more or less futile, but now after reading this (thanks, guy above;))
I tried again and the extra FPS from the PSEye makes a NICE difference.

Just got the delan clip and ps3 cam had a quick try before i found this thread but no joy.
Will have a good read today and see if i can get it working.

Let me know how you get on. Just change face tracking to point tracking API on the options.

Thank you so much for the settings.
When I initially set facetrack noir on my own I had some trouble with the curve settings but yours, are quite good.

Just want to thank you for this. I'm using your initial guide on the first page to get things set up, and have been working on tweaking things to get better responsiveness. For those who wear glasses, I'd suggest taking them off in the initial stage when it's finding your pattern and then put them back on afterwards.

I set the camera to 120 in the Eye Test, but FaceTrack says it's tracking at 56FPS on the camera. Is that normal?

Any other hints and tips for improving performance?

My DelanClip and PS3 eye arrived yesterday, and wow, what a difference! So much more responsive than using facetrack without IR, and as for EDTracker, well I might have got some duff components in the mail because I could never get it working.

Working great in Arma 3 and Live for Speed too.

Thanks for the rep :) yes 56fps is pretty much what I get, which seems pretty par for the course. Not sure if it is possible to lower the resolution to increase FPS, didn't seem to be able to myself, but should work fine as is.

The most important thing to improve performance is good light, using a table lamp if reqd. As I said, pointing the cam up to you is better than down on you. And if you want much more accurate tracking the get a Delan Clip which you would attached to a headset (or Alice band(!)) and change the tracker type from facetracker to point tracker. They're about £22:

Does that requiring cracking open the camera to take out the IR filter?

Not if you buy the package he sells that includes the camera - he does all the modifications required. I was up and running within 10 minutes. Brilliant bit of kit, the advantage over EDTracker is the 6 points of movement, although it's double the cost at £36 for the camera and headgear. Not bad though!

Yeah, but then why did I bother to buy a PS Eye? ;)

Hey guys, I was wondering if a PS Eye is of any advantage over a Logitech C525 (that has some basic face traciking features) using Facetrack NOIR ? Is it better at face traciking on the hardware side compared to your standard webcam ?

Thanks !

A bit late but... The PS3 can do 60 fps.

Oh, and there's no need to crack open the PS3 when using the delan clip, you can use a bit of old (camera) film as a lens filter.

Interesting. Explain. Are you talking about the whole IR filter thing?

Yeah, when I first got the PS3 I saw all sorts of vids about cracking it open and removing the filter and I though "sod that" :) I'd do it if I had to but then I saw another way.

The suggestion was to cut up a floppy disk and use that on the outside but I wasn't that impressed so I searched around for some old photographs and found their negatives - then just cut one/two bits to size and sellotape over the end. The bit that actually worked the best was the really dark bit at the end that wasn't really a photo.

Take a look here :

I used this through the beta/gamma and it works well enough.

I also got hold of an ED tracker (9150) to compare the two. I must admit that I prefer the ED tracker to the delan clip/PS3 cam setup.

I'm interested in getting an IR setup for my PS3 cam (face track is okay, but only okay), but want to find the cheapest and easiest arrangement. I could put something together, but only if it was easy. I'm not an electrician. But if it's cheap enough I'd love something pre-made. Any suggestions?

I got the same one as shown on the Delan Engineering website:

http://www.delanengineering.com/shop/

It was from them but via ebay. It's worth noting that their website shop says:

"Buy it, try it – returns are accepted ! If you like it – keep it – we’ll give you 6 months warranty !"

Other than that I have seen people make them out of lego or 3d print them. From what I understand is that the only thing that really matters is getting the measurements right so that they're easy to enter into the software (FaceTrackNOIR / opentrack etc.)

The lego vid is here and shows him playing ED :)

Hello, I recently installed my new PS3 eye and Facetracknoir. I followed a tutorial to set it up. Everything is working fine BUT I can't figure out how to set my cam at 120 FPS.
According to the guide I have to open CL-Eye Test and set video capture to 320x240 @120 FPS (125FPS), then close the window and open Facetracknoir.
But when I do that it seems that the previous settings just reset to the cam default settings. So all I can do is to use the PS3 eye at 60FPS.
Any suggestions? Is there anybody who was able to make it work at 120fps?

Thank you

I wasn't able to get it to 120 fps, 60 seems to be max I can get.

If you're using the IR part of FTNIR then you can set it to upto 100 fps. To do this, you have to go into the pointtracker settings, go to the camera tab and set the resolution to 320x240. Stop the tracker and start it again for the changes to come into place. This will also have the effect of pushing FTs cpu usage down to pretty much nothing. While you're in there, you can set the cameras angle (minus degrees if the camera is above you looking down). Next, set the Point Extraction Threshold to as low as it will go before the camera sees IR everywhere. And the most important setting that has the biggest difference, use the calibration tab to tell FT how far away from your head the clip is by clicking the calibrate button under the model tab and waving your head around in circles until the numbers start to stabilise. Also, it's best to go into the keybinds section and set FT to keep tracking under the engine tracker options as FT goes a bit wild on the cpu if set to Stop Engine when you pause the tracker. These steps can have a big effect on the responsiveness of your tracker, making it pretty much as good as TrackIR.
