Fall DLC 2023 Speculation

Jumping in with a question:
What are you all think about the antelopes we have in game? Do you think need more, or are you happy with what we have?

I'll start. I think we can all agree the blackbuck is kind of essential. But as far as African antelope go. I would like the kudu. I also really want a duiker, either the yellow-backed or red flanked. But honestly, I wouldn't be super disappointed of we didn't get more.
Imo we have plenty of antelope, but they are mostly the same type of standard antelope. So the diversity isnt actually that high despite gave so many of them.
Imo where still missing a big and small one like eland and dik dik or duiker. Also definetly one from asia would be nice, 2 would be better.

I was thinking if they did an islands pack they could market it with an Oceania/Polynesian theme and have the following animals:

Tasmanian Devil
Kiwi
Blue Penguin
Crocodile Monitor or Echidna
Lord Howe Island Stick Insect

I wouldn't say they're nothing alike, given they both share the same semi-sprawled stance and a waddling gait, but they do move in quite distinct ways and wouldn't work on the same rig. Echidnas tend to move both legs on one side of their body at the same time, kind of like a camel, while platypus move the legs on the same side of the body in different directions like most other mammals (see the videos below to see what I mean). Echidnas also have much longer legs, which makes them raised above the ground and exaggerates their waddle even further, while platypus legs are much shorter and they tend to drag their belly across the ground while they walk.

Thank you for this explanation 🤩
With every movie I see I am more in love with them.

Packs strictly decided to SA and Oceania are my biggest wants rights now.

And the New Australian section in Wilhelma zoo with a group of first quokkas in Europe give other zoos a chance to obtain them in the future and popularize them among this continent 🤩

As an ungulate and antelope lover, I think we do need more antelopes, there're lots of antelope species to add. There're also lots of antelopes that are common in zoos that the game doesn't have. We don't have a single Asian antelope in the game yet which could've been in grassland and arid pack.

Antelopes I would like to see in the game:
Blackbuck and Nilgai for Asian antelope
For African antelopes: Giant/Common Eland, Sitatunga, Lesser/Greater Kudu, Dik-Dik and Roan Antelope

This is a very delicate subject on this forum but I still have a bunch of antelopes I really need in the game:

  • Eland - preferably critically endangered western Giant Eland and biggest of all antelope species
  • Hartebeest - I would love to see Bontebok but any will do
  • Blackbuck - first Asian antelope
  • Nilgai - antelope that doesn’t look like antelope at all
  • Gerenuk - new animation when they would eat standing on their hind legs would be outstanding
  • Dik-dik - this small creature would great to keep in every zoo
  • Greather kudu - majestic and beautiful

One part of me is honestly just done with hoofstock. We've gotten so many of them--an outright majority of habitat animals this year alone--and we've gotten more antelope than anything. We've gotten as many African artiodactyls in the past six months as we've gotten birds in the past three years, and as many antelope in one pack as monkeys (Old World or New World) in three years. In a perfect world I'd like to see kudu and impala and Grant's gazelle, but not when we only have so many DLC left and when building for them would be essentially identical to building for all the other African ungulates. I can accept the blackbuck but anything else is going to just reinforce my perception that Frontier is taking the path of least resistance towards making most of their animals and/or doesn't care about fixing the lack of avian/monkey representation.

The Blackbuck is by far the most needed antelope, I'm not sure if it has any competition at this point. It's honestly crazy we don't already have it, absolutely essential species in my eyes.

The only other antelopes I feel are somewhat needed after that is Kirk's Dik-Dik and Impala. Dik-Dik would give us a small antelope that would be great for side exhibits in our African areas, as well as a good choice for smaller zoos. They are quite common here in the UK and to me are an iconic zoo animal. The Impala isn't super common in zoos but to me it is the archetypal African antelope and its quite distinct appearance wise so to me it is needed.

There's other antelopes I'd like to see as well but I can live without them, those would be: Common Eland, Blesbok/Bontebok, Red Duiker, and Gerenuk.

The blackbuck seems like the only deeply needed antelope. Beyond that, I want to see an another Asian one.

I'm kind of exhausted with African ungulates at the moment. Maybe something like a dik-dik would be different enough? I don't really want to see any African ungulates for another year. After that though, I might be open to a few. If they ever made a mega Safari expansion, a bunch of antelope and maybe some other African clones could be welcome additions, but few to none of them are truly needed.

Antelope:
  • Critically needed:
    • Just one: the iconic blackbuck with its sexual dimorphism and South Asian representation would be a great animal to have in the game. I don't think the game could seem complete without an Asian antelope.
  • Essential:
    • A second antelope for Asia. A nilgai could pair nicely with the blackbuck, an Arabian Oryx would be cool for the Middle East, and the saiga is the most popular and distinctive Asian antelope. Those three are about tied for this slot. The saiga is not common in captivity, so I can't really call them essential, but they seem very interesting. Other options include the rare soala (maybe they could add one to celebrate if there was another sighting), the four-horned, and a gazelle.
  • Really Cool/Important:
    • Dik-dik or klipspringer: They are probably the closest to essential right now for African antelope.
    • Gerenuk: Their browsing behavior is interesting, and they are the most requested African antelope
    • 2 more Asian antelope. (Probably nilgai, saiga, or Arabian Oryx)
  • Nice to have:
    • Giant Eland: why not add the biggest antelope in Africa
    • Red Hartebeest or Topi: while less common in captivity, these would be extremely distinct from other African Antelope.
    • Zebra or some other duiker: I'd go with the flashy zebra duiker, but a smaller, jungle antelope might be nice
    • The greater kudu is actually my favorite antelope but its similarity to the Nyala drags it down here for me. I might be happy to see it, but it is not high on my list of priorities.
    • Waterbuck, Impala, Bontebuck: all cool
Other Ungulates:
  • Critically needed:
    • Markhor: Himalayan Rep and a very iconic goat.
    • Reeves's Muntjac: A fanged Asian deer seems important, and this one is my favorite. It could be paired with Red pandas in children's zoo sections
    • Collared Peccary: South America needs more stuff, and adds rep for Mexico as a bonus.
  • Still Essential:
    • Golden Takin: popular and iconic. Provides a bigger ungulate for East Asia.
    • Wild Boar: While I don't personally need them, they seem to be important for Europe.
    • Wisent or Chamois: Whichever is more important to the European players for zoo diversity.
    • Bighorn Sheep: I feel like this is NA's ibex. This is among my top picks for a clone animal and would add both a desert goat and Mexican rep.
    • Another South American Ungulate: I would go with the marsh deer, but the pudu and guanaco are also viable.
    • A North American Deer: Wapiti are impressive, and the white tailed makes very good filler for a bunch of regions. I would like to see both eventually but could settle for one.
    • Masai or Rothschild's giraffe: This is mostly a personal pick, but it seems weird that there is only one giraffe subspecies.
    • Musk Ox: Almost forgot about this iconic tundra animal.
  • Really Cool/Important:
    • Lowland Anoa: good with babirusa
    • Pere David's Deer: conservation story
    • Barbary Sheep: Africa doesn't have a goat, yet, and this one is cool.
    • Two more South American ungulates.
  • Nice to have:
    • Serow: cute goat from Japan and zoo tycoon
    • Tahr: cute goat
    • Gaur: iconic beast
    • The other NA deer.
    • Wisent or Chamois (pick the other one)
    • Another fanged deer from Asia: musk deer, water deer, and tufted deer are also cool.
    • Chital or Sambar deer: maybe a deer from India
Edited to add musk ox.

Does anybody have any idea of a timeline? Like, when the next DLC will be announced? I've never been real good with that

Mid September to early October my guess is, some think the dlc may release in mid September due to the Outsource_Iqa updating on the 15th August

Of all the packs, the fall release date has fluctuated the most. In 2020 there really wasn't one (i.e., Australia was in late summer). In 2021 it was announced on 9/23. And last year it was announced on 10/7. Most other packs across all quarters have been roughly within the same 1-2 week range.

Even though the SteamDB is getting updated I still think a mid-September to early October announce feels reasonable. Though I think I'd lean toward mid-September over October this time around.

Is generic white-tailed deer enough south american for you? SA isnt rich in temperate forests and this deer is probably most we can expect regarding whole continent.
It's perfect for me. While it's not really thought of when talking about SA, the fact is that the deer has the widest distribution in the Americas, and it's perfect for smaller, more local NA zoo builds, in my opinion
