There is a massive difference between those two shots. Ben Parry a former Frontier employee confirmed that lighting in cockpits was indeed changed here: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=162101&page=6&p=2475533&viewfull=1#post2475533 although he didn't talk about the obvious reduction in texture quality.

There was no downgrade in lightning, they actually improved it when they added dynamic lightning in february. Look at some Gamma videos, there was no lightning effect from stations, stars and HUD in your cockpit, now everything is lit properly (I think we still miss multiple light sources from stars). I agree on the texture quality though.

It wasn't a case that the lighting was downgraded, just changed (which might account for the darkening in the cockpits). Ben Parry, a former Frontier graphics dev just explained that in another thread:

Asteroid belts in 1.3 aren't nearly as impressive as they were back in beta & gamma.

That's the Wunjo 1 Furnace from beta, whatever happened to it? It was one of the most impressive sites in the early game at one point - especially in the Oculus Rift.

Regardless of lighting, there's nothing and no one that'd convince me the mesh has been untouched since that vid was shot. It's just as eye-blackening as the (in)famous Sidewinder cockpit comparison.
 
Have you recently had a look at your hands? Seems that sometimes the quality is extremely reduced. I have everything on 'high' settings.

It all started with a huge ambition and promises when they needed the money

now its all "this will cost us, lets just cut that out and work on something simple that will bring short term profits instead"... not only with graphics but with just about anything they go for the bare minimum...

the engine is at its limits... the 32 bit client is pathetic in this day and age.... 2 gigs of Vram used at max pfff

the instancing and the disjointed universe are even more laughable, FE 2 did this 100 times better

there is less visual content than in your average 10$ indie title and the procedural generation code is sooo disappointing.

I have no patience anymore... i feel cheated and made a fool of. But maybe I am... i believed they can do what they promised, but there was nothing to base that on. The team is just weak. All they can do are silly minigames. Seriously, go through all the reviews for their games... "the game feels like disjointed minigames" is a phrase that comes very often. I guess vertical slice method has its benefits, at least the games developed like that are coherent.

... sorry i needed to vent... but i just cannot bare this disappointment and at the same time i still have some unjustified hope which makes me come back to this technological disaster of a game.... i blame the move to MMo for all this crap

The LOD change/pop when entering the letterbox is what I mostly noticed and it's really annoying. The other issues I haven't seen yet, might it be related to graphics cards/drivers? I'm on an NVIDIA.

IMHO I'd love to have the old fog style in asteroid fields. It made some asteroid fields unusable because you couldn't even read your HUD, but that was part of the danger, it was like being in a dense fog under your own risk. You could always go to a different RES if that bothered you...
 
On the dense fog in belts and the depth of shadows, i think realism is better than ascetics and high contrast. Thick fog gives low contrast it is just physics, so the only time you can get good sharp shadows is when scattering is at a minimum. I personally think the fog shading giving that hue in the cracks and shadows of the rocks is working as intended.

The question i think regarding the fog is if it is working as intended in the low fog, mid fog cases, where you should see a progression of shadow hue from black, through to the fog colour.
 
confirmed here, it was introduced in 1.3.x

Actually iv seen this since beta, not sure what triggers it, but iv seen it on my PC typically when loading textures, so when first loading the game certain things get loaded in an extremely low sampling setting, it often will snap back high res when things have settled. Not strictly introduced in 1.3... it might be ocuring on higher end systems where people have not typically observed it as much, BUT its not a new thing. Still is worth bringing up to see if it is behaving as expected

Please tell me that is not real. Please. One of the first things I did in this game was go to Sol so I could see how close I could get to the surface, and cruise around generally, and that was definitely not what I saw (Unfortunately did not take any screenshots). If that is what planetary landings are going to look like...

No it's a loading issue. I think it has to do with your head movement. I use track ir and when i watch a planet on a close fly by, sometimes this clumsy view phenomenon happens.

I can assure you earth is still fine, but it is still light years away form the quality of 'space engine'. Just google it, really impressive and you can get down through the atmosphere to the surface. I made this screen shot yesterday:

I think it is a matter of time before the PC and Mac gets a 64bit client. XB1 only runs x64 code, so the game is there on 64bit, not sure how much of a difference it will make, it should run faster as x64 code has for example more registers and so on. One problem they might be facing is the they don't have a x64bit toolchain on PC?

It would be nice of FD would open up more advanced settings to the power users so you could tweak the game a bit more, like the letterbox LOD pop. However once you do start tweaking these kind of settings you automatically loose the right to complain about perf :)

Sorry couldnt help myself, but more screenshots get posted more its clear that something were done....i just hope wasnt laziness in find a way to improve the performance.....or even worse reduce the graphical difference between console and pc (if for some reason you think this last part wouldnt make sense, check unless you already know it for the game watchdogs.....i still really hope this was just laziness about the optimization)
