FAO FRONTIER: List of Graphical Changes / Issues for since Patch 1.3

Dust / Fog: This was optimised due to a pathological case of overdraw (which looked very broken in a number of cases). There’s definitely no downgrade due to our Mac and Xbox One versions, but there have been some changes. Performance and visual consistency should be improved in the general case, however it does seem that some systems are not looking as good as they did. As ever there is no perfect solution. For a fair comparison, the exact same position and lighting conditions are needed (some viewing angles will always looks more awesome!), but we could have entire threads dedicated to discussions on how to light rings (and we’ve had many long discussions internally). I have a number of open issues in our system on the look of the rings, though currently no ETA for when we’ll be addressing them.”

Please see the video I added to that bug report. I'm sorry, but this ring that used to look stunning is now absolutely awful and the performances in it are worse than they used to be. It's not just that it's "not looking as good as [it] did". Look at the distant asteroids, all updating by blocks. This looks absolutely terrible and I'm dismayed to read that you guys call this an improvement and have no plan to fix it soon!

Can we please add a rating system for low/mid and high end systems so we can process some of this vitriol more effectively. Thanks.

Not really a graphical downgrade, and I miss some shots to show it, by I noticed that the skybox was darker (and much more realistic and "deepspace" feel sort of) before. Now the sky is always "cloudy", how to say, foggy, cluttered by small nebulae. The feeling I had before is to really be in deep space, and the views were dramatically similar to what you see at the telescope. Not a big issue but I liked more the "before" version :)

Sorry guys but all I saw from that last 'dev post' on this subject is totally meh and typical PR bull usually came from well almost all company when their products are under attack

The sidweinder cockpits comparison is in so many ways the perfect proof of visual downgrade that already happened, the most blatant aspect that got downgraded are the texture quality, interface lighting system and polycount on some of the object -especially that round grill thing on the dashboard, is that supposed to be air conditioner?-; on the alpha build the round was better and have proper occlusion (depth), while today it less round and total flat

But apparently the dev insist that there is no downgrade, oh where else have I seen this? Far cry 3, watch dogs and witcher 3 came in my mind... Notice that such downgrade involves these games being on consoles? And few years ago some game dev told a media that big company demand visual parity on multiplatform games

So frontier response is very much lacking on this matter and cannot be taken seriously

Really appreciate the response Zac Antonaci. It is most welcome to hear that these issues/changes are at least under review for many a reason.

Thank you.

Edit: I'd like to make a simple suggestion, if indeed this is possible. Can we not have the previous version before the major changes where made as the Ultra setting for those of us that weren't experiencing problems anyway, and then the new 1.3 version under the High graphical setting for instance?

Just a thought, because those that have noticed these changes are the players with the capable machines and are subsequently the most effected. Anyone who didn't use the Ultra setting probably has no idea of the differences that have occured.

While I appreciate the presence and response of FD Zac and Greg in this thread, I don't feel like we got a satisfying answer. Some screenshots, if they are real, cannot be explained by your response. There is a clear downgrade (not a "change") in textures and lightning in many of them. This adds up to my recent personal experiences with LOD issues and the dullification of foggy RESes.

I'd like at least an explanation, but mostly an official announcement about this:
- Will these changes be reverted?
- Will this be made optional through graphic settings? (let me decide if I want shiny @ 20 fps or dull @ 60)
- And more important: When?

Sorry if I sound too demanding, but this is not a new feature we are requesting. I would understand if your excuse is that through optimization you have to uglify some things, but this much? This is not the game I bought.

Good thread. Greg Ryder (Frontier’s Head of Rendering) got in touch with me after reading and wanted to offer some clarity on the points raised.
Zac

Yay, feedback !

What about the asteroid shadows ? (which disappeared somewhere between Beta 3 and now )

Exactly my feeling! Repped.

I have to pile on here, and say that this left me feeling meh..I appreciate any response, but the more things are downgraded the more I lose hope for this game because the potential of Elite is so vast. I guess when you wait 30 years for a game like this to come out, and when it does it's great but meh at the same time how do you balance your expectations? I bought this game because of the things I saw in the early videos that players such as Granite put out. Now I feel like this isn't the game I researched prior to buying it.

Guys, you don't understand. There was no downgrade, it was optimized! The optimization technique used was that they turned down the gfx till it ran better. Totally different!

P.s. All bugs are now features.

Yes it is funny how I could run the game on Ultra and get stuttering and frame rate drops then turn all settings to their lowest and get the same stuttering and frame rate drops.

Good thing Ultra got downgraded. Now I feel the new "Ultras" "optimized" stuttering and frame rate drops.

Elite: Dangerous is built to scale on PC (including 16k screenshot ability and hopefully one day 16k game when the monitors & graphics cards exist!). We are certainly not inclined to downgrade the appearance of anything in the game. Exposing more tweakables for an enhanced Ultra is clearly something you guys are passionate about and we’ll see where it can fit in the current roadmap.

The Ultra settings should have tweakable planet detail, less popup of ship details, more particle effects, reflections, higher texture quality etc.

Stuttering is now a feature, it's working as intended and is desgined to make you a better pilot.. ;)

Oh man, i must say ELITE is suffering from a x sickness :p . And that dev post about was at most very ambiguous :S
What the FRAK is happening with Frontier!!!? D: So shady i can't see my nose anymore :(

My simple specs :Core i7 920, 18g ram, mech h-drive @ 7200rpm, GTX560. The simple fact (pre 1.3) I can run this game in ultra at all, and get over 60 fps @ 1080p tells me ultra setting ain't all it's cracked up to be. 110 fps in high settings. Will try Ultra tonight.

It was't ambiguous it was carefully edited of meaningful content in an effort to ease communication of relevant data. We don't want information overload, who'd clean up the mess?

Same tactic politicians use, and do we trust them.....

EDIT: To be fair, I trust FD a whole hell of a lot more than I do any politician, I'm just not happy with vague responses.
