FAO FRONTIER: List of Graphical Changes / Issues for since Patch 1.3

There's spotting the bug, and then there's understanding its cause, and then there's fixing it (without creating new bugs), that's the problem.

Is this thread still working?
I think i found another one.
I didn't noticed it before 1.3.

Only one light source working at once... I just wanted to take good screenshot!

This sort of thing is making me feel like ''ultra'' means medium to FD...
Low...
Even with supersampling x2.0 I see Aliasing everywhere...
I think AA was changed too but i don't have right photos from 1.2 and 1.1.

Thanks to deferred rendering it's gonna look like that for a long-long time. At least untill better version of edge blurring AA algorithm appears.
One more rather important disadvantage is that, due to separating the lighting stage from the geometric stage, hardware anti-aliasing does not produce correct results anymore since interpolated subsamples would result in nonsensical position, normal, and tangent attributes. One of the usual techniques to overcome this limitation is using edge detection on the final image and then applying blur over the edges...

Think of Unreal Tournament 3 and GTA 4.

Not sure if this has been mentioned so far ...
I have had terrible stuttering since 1.3 release
it is intermittent but happens all the time in normal flight and SC. it even happens when there's very little going on.
it isn't a juddering effect as such but more like a sudden jump forward in time by a whole second or more. Disconcerting in forward flight, annoying and immersion wrecking at best and completely destructive at worst .... When in a scrap or landing..
when I get back from my holiday I need to screenvid it happening to update my ticket.
Mir isn't my rig because I could run everything on high/ultra before ...

Looks like this issue was reported many times under different sauces with a standard answering machine reply.

Also, I found something interesting in one of those reports.
2) Also on lighting, most planets do not show the correct colour of the star shining on the planet. Only when the planet is really close to the star it shows the correct colour lighting. You can also see it on the ship also, when you start to fly away from the star the colour changes to a flat white colour. Shouldn't the colour of the star fill the whole star system?
Below is a picture on what it should look like.

The second issue reported is actually a deliberate stylistic design choice, so it's working as intended. :)

What kind of deliberate stylistic design choice it is? "To hell with variety and atmosphere! Let's paste a simple white light in every system for increased blandness!" one? For what purpose? Realism?

With every passing day the meagre amount of trust I had in Frontier vanishes. Wish I had a time machine like Biff Tannen.

Bloody hell...

I'm waiting for 1.4 - What is next?
Will they disable supersampling option?
no 4k? only 720p?
Console stable 30 fps?
textures from PS2?

Hey guys,

Good thread. Greg Ryder (Frontier’s Head of Rendering) got in touch with me after reading and wanted to offer some clarity on the points raised.

His thoughts are below but I’d like to say that I think this is a really great example of the dev teams listening and truly caring about giving technical responses where possible. So big kudos to Greg and the rendering team as I know they’ll be reading. Sorry for the delay in replying.

I would also just make a gentle reminder that all bugs should be reported through the bug forum and through support channels just so we can make sure we are effectively recording and fixing those bugs.

Please thank Granite for putting together a thread like this. The team is always striving to make things better, and we’ve found a number of things using the profiling tools on the Mac and Xbox One that have improved the PC build (thus the opposite to the fear they might lower the quality of the PC build). Elite: Dangerous is built to scale on PC (including 16k screenshot ability and hopefully one day 16k game when the monitors & graphics cards exist!). We are certainly not inclined to downgrade the appearance of anything in the game. Exposing more tweakables for an enhanced Ultra is clearly something you guys are passionate about and we’ll see where it can fit in the current roadmap.

On the ships / galaxy map front, I’m not aware of any changes that went in for 1.3.

Dust / Fog: This was optimised due to a pathological case of overdraw (which looked very broken in a number of cases). There’s definitely no downgrade due to our Mac and Xbox One versions, but there have been some changes. Performance and visual consistency should be improved in the general case, however it does seem that some systems are not looking as good as they did. As ever there is no perfect solution. For a fair comparison, the exact same position and lighting conditions are needed (some viewing angles will always looks more awesome!), but we could have entire threads dedicated to discussions on how to light rings (and we’ve had many long discussions internally). I have a number of open issues in our system on the look of the rings, though currently no ETA for when we’ll be addressing them.”

Thanks!

Zac

This would then raise the question that if nothing was being done to downgrade the graphics, what on earth is going on with FDs own Quality Assurance? If you cant spot graphical changes that are bad enough to give you eye cancer then its now wonder that serious bugs are slipping through into your production releases.

Micro$oft paid them... There is no other options.
Game doesn't working better, but looks pretty bad... They can just add "uber" graphic options.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has thought how much worse it looks since returning after a break of a couple of months. The jaggies seem to be worse even using DSR, and what is up with all the scratched and scuffed paint even though the ship and paint has been repaired to 100%?

I bought some skins for the Clipper and all I get to see are scuffed versions of it! Not cool in my opinion...

Other than that I really don;t like the emergence of the dreaded Jaggies, I used to be able to eliminate them completely at X2 DSR and a bit of anti aliasing, now even at X4 DSR (equivalent to 4K) I can still see them... totally ruins the look of the game for me.

And the stuttering... oh my lord the stuttering is worse than it was in Beta!

What has happened to Elite while I've been away?!

Xbox happened...
PC is no longer FD priority.

I found another one.

first image, i can't zoom closer.

Let's zoom out a bit...

And everything looks worse. I'm playing on ultra with supersampling x1.5.

Sorry in advance I don't check the various information outlets every day, just wondering if anyone has read any official word on this from Michael or anyone at FD?

There is no denying the game looks a lot worse recently. What on Earth has happened?!

It really is quite sad to see how far the game has fallen visually. Most graphical features have taken a sharp nosedive and I always dreaded the moment this game would make an appearance on console for this very reason.

Devs downgrade in order to maintain parity across all platforms thus making things easier on their end. It's no coincidence many of the graphical changes coincide with the release of the xbone version. Had this happened from the very beginning it would have been much easier to swallow, but to enjoy the beauty of what was alpha/beta and watch that slowly fade away with each patch is both sad and infuriating at the same time.

okay so I'm reporting a quick test on a RES after side grading from gtx 970 sli to a single 980 ti, the game is much smoother...

so I guess SLI isn't very good for this game, I haven't try the game with 980 ti in longer time though
