Favorite ship design and why

In Elite: The Python - has a palpable feeling of heft, ability and 'rightness' about it, and I like the minimalist 'arrowhead' design.

Elsewhere... toughy this... The original Battlestar Galactica - a cross between a crocodile and a spaceship, and again it has that 'form-follows-function' kind of rightness about it.

Honorable mention: Eagle Transporter from Space 1999... are you spotting a trend yet... ;-)

Lol I nwent for Galactica but nearly went for eagle transporter too :).

As a kid I had both hanging with dozens of other ships hanging from my bedroom ceiling via fishing line

Elite: Keelback. Yeah, I know, it's an awful ship. But I like underdogs, and makes the game more challenging in pve.
Non-Elite: Imperial Class star destroyer, an iconic ship like no one else. Close second, battleship Yamato from Star Blazer.

I did that too! Except when I was a kid I had to use my imagination so I would make ships out of toothpicks and construction paper. We actually made a huge Star Destroyer once but unfortunately when we attached it via fishing line it kind of crumpled in on itself because toothpicks don't make a good skeleton.

I've waffled on a favorite design several times.

It used to be the Cobra MkIII. I liked the "sleek" lines and overall symmetry of the ship itself. After that I had my heart set on the Anaconda for it's giant wedge-like love pattern. During the in-between period I along a simple progression line: Cobra -> Vulture -> Asp E -> Clipper -> Python -> FDL -> FAS.
I'd been focused on the Python for awhile when I finally got to it and found myself turned off by the nose of the ship itself. It didn't fit the aesthetic I had imagine when seeing it during combat or while passing me at a station and hadn't been very apparent until I had one and could inspect all angles myself. The same could be said for the FDL. I truly hated the FDL's design aesthetic for quite some time before finding myself inside the cockpit. Once there, it grew on me like a boil until I could ignore it no longer. I fell in love. It's still one of my favorite ships. However, now I've found myself in the cockpit of a FAS and while I will forever disapprove of the cockpit placement/design on the FAS I can't help but appreciate it's utilitarian shoebox design and little nubby wings.

I did finally get an Anaconda fitted out and found myself turned off by the overall bulk of that rear end when you take in the thrusters and cargo bay areas with the overall upper wedge. Not horribly impressed with either the Cutter or the Corvette.

My favourite ship for looks and just flying around in is the Eagle. Pity that they built it out of cardboard.
.
Non ED, the best looking ship for me is the Narn battlecruisers in Babylon 5.
But if I could chose a B5 ship to add to ED, it would be the Starfury.

I'm going to jump out on a limb here and guess you find car shopping quite difficult :D

There's a lot of good ships in here. I've been having quite a good time reading about all these designs and works of fiction I've never heard of. And it's quite clear the spread, at least with the 2 or so pages of this thread, (the spread of the thread?) of ED ship love is wide.

Okay let me just say in terms of looks, And Just Looks... The Cobra MK IV. I can't stand the MK IV but god it's pretty. I wish it was even half as good as the MK III

Outside it's the Eternal from Gundam Seed. (is that even a surprise given my avatar is that ship's captain? It's pink for Christ sakes)

Aesthetically, I love the T7. You can see it groaning under the weight of that front container. It really fits the look of a low cost industrial container ship.

Outside of ED? It's got to be Serenity. That crazy ivan..

Elite: DBS, its design aesthetics suit the scouting role, if only I could have a detailed surface scanner, fuel scoop and SRV pod the she would be fit the "dragoon" reconnaissance role perfectly. When I can afford an asp scout them perhaps Artemis's Arrow become my combat courier...

Non-Elite: The Discovery 2001 but without HAL being told to not disclose the real mission...

Viper in elite for me, that engine noise.

Elsewhere - I've always had a soft spot for the hybrid shadow earth destroyers from B5... Rotating bits, black alien tentacles and blue turret beam weapons, what's not to love?

In elite: fan of the DBS/DBX and would spend every last credit I have to get one python sized.

Outside of elite: Definitely the Serenity, Galactica and Andromeda Ascendant. Also the vorlon ships from B5 were pretty cool.

and while I'm at it, the pillar of autumn, and the longsword bombers from Halo.

elite: love the vulture, it just needs a big nose mount multi cannon and its just like a space version of the A-10.

non elite its got to be the super star destroyer Executor. its the first appearance in empire that gets me.

The Autumn! I forgot about that. I like Halo UNSC designs but a Covenant supercarrier is just 28 KM of pure awesome. The one that initially attached Reach? It would definitely give almost every other ship a run for it's money.

Oh man this is hard.
I'm torn between the Vulture, Eagle, the Imperial ships... But I think the Eagle wins. It's a beautiful ship, even more beautiful is the Imperial version. It has a certain sci fi style to it that reminds me of Macross.

Outside Elite, it's undoubtedly the Millennium Falcon. ;)

Elite: Federal Corvette. Just... everything about it. From the Huge gun deployment animation, to the future twin fighter bay utility.

Non-Elite: Harrington Class Superdreadnought. First time a Medusa Class ship fired a shot in anger surprised the HELL out of those peep scum! :)

Not to many people (I don't think) will recognize Macross. Here in the states, it was called Robotech. I loved it when I was a kid.

In Elite, it would have to be the Diamondback Explorer. The aesthetic reminds me somewhat of the Apache helicopter gunship.

Outside of the game, I always liked the Y wing bomber from SW.
