Elite / Frontier FE2 & FFE maps of human space & factions

i thought it would never be over but there it is, i can still make a few change but the hardest part is done now ;).

i've been posting parts of it in a few places that some may have already seen but there are the full size versions.

suggestions, comments... go ahead ;)

that's only low res versions, click to find the download link, it's about 8000*9000 so i used mega.

hope you like it ;)

5768 systems here... all named and positionned by hands :O

click on the pictures to get to their dowload link from mega
these are purposedly smaller to fit in there, one full picture being 14MB+.

FFE map + disputed systems(white + "!!") + system under federal interdiction(light blue) - both are the same in FE2

.....................................................*Spica (-4;-17)

i havent decided where to put the legend yet so there it is :

Note that Dasofa(1;9) belongs to the federation, but does not have any spaceport or station.
the federation seems to have scientific interests there...

btw Spica is right off the bottom (-4;-17), just bellow the "-4".
Spica is at 142+LY from Sol.

Some early versions

and there compare to the galaxy :

A "slightly" smaller & simpler version, it took me minutes to do it!!! ;)
if a sector possess at least one Imperial or Federal system, it will hide the independent sytems in the same sector by using Fed/Imp color.

Sectors for Lave(-3;-6), Alioth(0;5), Achenar(1;-4) and Sol(0;0) have their own colors.

now it will be more mike this

while doing this i found several interesting things that helped me quite a bit, just thought i should mention them :

1>http://www.frontierastro.co.uk/FrontierMaps/FMaps.html

the second software on this page helped me reposition every star system more accurately and find some that were missing, it creates an image of the region you want, unfortunately, it doesnt gives the same system names for those which are procedurally generated, very usefull anyway, you can use it to show the entire galaxy, though zoom out as much as you can cause it's huge and take time to generate. you wont see individual systems but you'll see the shape of the galaxy, just make sure you give the right parameters. it's impressive anyway.

the lcars version also gives factions for FE2&FFE, and you can move the map to see any region of the galaxy.

2>http://www.jades.org/maps/pop_map.htm#MAP

here you can find a lot of info about inhabited system(tech level, political system...) you even have a map, much simpler but which gives easy access to those infos.

it helped me correct a few things and see how far i had to go, even though it meant further than i anticipated.

i'm thinking about adding the tech level using this website, i cant add too much on my map anyway, in order to keep it reasonably readable.

i found both of them when i had done something like 80% of the map(when i thought i did about 98%!).

anyway it made my job way easier, at least for what i had not done yet.

Very impressive, but all you imperial players had best watch out - it looks like the Empire's slowly being encircled by the Federation...

thanks all ;)

Actually the Federation has also forbidden acces to several independant systems(light blue).
And there are still a few disputed systems between the Empire & Federation(white), all but one under martial law :

Edit : see OP for maps

What great work nicomak! Nice to see an overview of the political situation too. Didn't know the Alliance were that far North.

Bravo Monsieur!

thanks ;)

something i havent said though, do you see the "red rectangle"? one of its side is coming close to Alioth(capital of the Alliance), that's the borders of the map you got in the box of frontier. that's 1/5 of the map i think.

so the Alliance is mostly off the top of the original map.

Nha federation is just to tinily spread out :D will be easy to cut supply lines.

Don't know about that, the feds seem to have encircled them with pairs of systems in the south. No doubt this is why the Empire fermented the Rebel Alliance, (hmm, sounds familiar;)), not realising what was happening until it was too late to take on directly. Now if they can take control at Arayess and Ethenbe.

Fierce independants around Lave may be becoming uncomfortable at the proximity of these superpower shenanigans. Rumours abound of a rather messy end to a Federal intelligence operation in the area.

Great stuff nicomak, if I may suggest a small improvement. Tiny sector numbers so you can read where you are when zoomed in.

thank you ;)

yeah good idea, i tried before but it was a bit harder because the map was expanding at the time. i added coordinates on each sector, now it wont be as painful to know where you're looking ;)

Edit : for all maps, see the OP.

These are astonishing maps, great job nicomak! It's surprising just how large the zone appears to be at 36,000 LY.

thanks!

without this 1000LY sided square though, you wouldnt see much of the map at that resolution, i'll try to make the comparison with the galaxy a little better, i dit that in a hurry so as to have a rough idea of the the map size.

you can see it overlaping a "green" square, that was the size of a previous version of the map going from -12 to 12 both horizontally & vertically, then i discovered there were inhabited "stuff" off of this "little" square...

THAT is one superb map! Excellent work! Looks superb in the OP but miles better zoomed when downloaded.... Wonderful!

As others have said a beautiful map, and love seeing where the spheres of Faction influences are.

If in the future when ED is fully released do you think you will do an updated version? assuming there's enough available data to go on(also thinking that after awhile Commanders trading new map areas(IF available freely to all) would be great to add on to your future map.

again great work mate.

As a person that still plays FE2 to this day, this map will be invaluable !

Amazing just amazing.

Thanks,

i also still play FE2 ;)

but with ED, that might change :D

Thank you; the map in FE2/FFE was "flat"(almost) so that it's "easy" to make a 2D map(but really long...). A few stars should be in front of each other as seen from "above", they appear instead to be very close to each others on my maps, it happened 2 or 3 times.

with ED, well we know it wont be a flat galaxy, so expect a 1000LY thick map, hard to represent in 2D, real stars will be located at their real location and if you think about moving Alioth or Achenar, you'll need to move the whole factions with it, maybe make them bigger so as to make them touch each other. It might be moving them above or bellow the galactic plan. making a 3D map is much harder, but if you look at one picture, in one of the newsletter you can see the view of a system, and at the left you can see that you can select filters for factions, it might be just for searching systems more rapidelly, but it might also show up on the map, like showing only the imperial systems? we dont know much about that but i'd love to be able to see the different faction regions of space even if it's 3d and therefore a bit harder to represent/understand their shapes. i guess that rotating the whole thing could help do that.
i doubt i could do better on my own than FD but i could make an opengl representation, if i have precise coordinates, it might be possible. though that is if i wont be too busy playin the game ;)

Edit : the OP has been updated with coordinates(shown in each sector of each map)

@nicomak........but of course! i forgot ED map will be 3D and stars in the right place(not boding welll for me, wont remember where i parked my ship! lol)

but like you it would be interesting to see the Factions territory lay out in whatever view would be possible for ED, anyway again great work on your map :)

it's intended that way, to give a max of details when you zoom in, and to be able to see the general layout of factions while zoomed out. that's why there's those coloured background, if i remove them, it's much more difficult to see where the systems of a faction are located, unless they are regrouped like most of the Empire & the Alliance.
i wouldnt want to make them look bigger than what they really are. which is something which bothers me with the Federation and this "arm" around the east side of the Empire, where most of this space is independant.
i splited them in the west, it seems a bit nicer like that, and seeing those disputed system in the middle, which also appear on the east side, with all those isolated system from both sides, it shows clearly how the Feds & Imps are really interested in those regions.
