Oh dear, and the sad thing is, I didn't need the link for that either.... as soon as I saw the words the tune was in my head..... ARRGHHH

Interplanetary ATIS (air traffic information service) would be kind of awesome! The local small airfield's ATIS here uses a DECTalk (think Stephen Hawking) voice synthesiser and beeps out the airfield's ID in Morse Code between updates. Brilliant idea for immersion. :)

Why not go for the realistic option - the noise of either a laser firing or a projectile launching from the weapons bay is your firing noise for your own ship.

Ships firing on you are soundless until the weapon hits you, then you have the noise of the shields or hull taking damage. It's a good way to intuitively know when your shields are down too without having to take your eyes off the battle...
A point to consider is that this realistic option is becoming familiar to TV/film SciFi audiences (e.g. Battlestar Galactica). It is fast becoming the naturalism which audiences expect. Go for it :)

Binaural sound effects please, they would go great with the 3d cockpit. Sample - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSXPAWtODvY.

Sound could also be used for scanning... we can be scanning for radio emissions from other vessels (a weak help request), planets, astronomical events. Then there could be signals only discernible when multiple ships form a listening array. Or even long range broadcast beacons for explorers to leave a trail. Then they could somehow use that to make coordinates for a jump. Other sounds at http://spacesounds.com/.

Apologies for necromancing...

I'm sitting here listening to some music thinking how good it would be to play ED to and found this thread where the devs say there won't be a jukebox function. No probs, I can stick it on in the background.

However, not sure whether this is common in PC games as I've been on consoles for new games in the last 7 years, but an event driven jukebox would be pretty good IMO. Obviously the ED score will be tuned to the game and maybe a jukebox wouldn't have the same feel, but maybe it would stop you getting fed up with the ED score (depending on number of tracks - FFE had 17 which was a lot but given the length of time you played the game... ;)), helping to keep it fresh.

AFAIR FE2 and (although maybe only?) FFE both played one of a certain number of the tracks when something happened (depending on your settings for music after hyperspace/docking/battle). It would be pretty good if you were able to nominate tracks of your own music collection to be played on these events. So you could play an intense high energy track for battles, or an upbeat soothing track after docking. So kind of like what FFE did anyway, but with your own choice of music.

My only experience of jukebox functionality in PC games has been that it randomly played tracks from a single playlist, there was nothing to tie the music to what was happening in the game. So maybe I've missed it. And in any case it's not going to happen for ED but I thought I'd at least try to plant a seed :)
