FEEDBACK: 2.2.03 Update #4 New VR feature - Enabled dithering for VR to reduce banding.

Now that I have an understanding of what this feature will give, I am interested in seeing how much of a difference this may make for Vive users, like myself. Sadly I was hoping to try it last night, but did not have the time to.

From my understanding, Vive users don't have color banding issues, so you may not see any difference as far as banding is concerned.

Much better looking in those shots looks more like the DK2 visuals back at 5.0 and thank you Horizone, I would rep you again but already did appreciate the look at it.

That's true, if Vive users are getting good colour experience anyway, the difference might not be visible. But I'd expect FD to keep the same render path for both the Vive and the Rift, so the dithering might well be there for Vive too.
Otherwise they'd be splitting the code up - perhaps it is necessary in the short term? Not sure.

Would be great if a Vive user could take a screen shot of the typical star-corona area, and see if the dithering is present (its easy to see it under magnification in Photoshop etc).

I guess it all depend on our own personal graphical standards. We all value different things. Some go to insane lengths wishing for the perfect anti-aliasing, others can play with jaggies and couldn't care less because to them, stutter free is all that's important. I just know that smooth colour gradients all the way into black without stepping is my big thing. Sure, I care about the other things being optimal too but the banding has annoyed me most of all things in the Rift since we left the DK2 era. I play Elite to be able to go to space. I want space to look real and when I stare into the black and see the edges between rgb(0,0,0) and rgb(0,0,1) I'm not in space anymore. :) If you're like me you should really appreciate this dithering filter they've added.
Just my two cents..

Completely agree! I believe people who havent noticed banding are either people who have somehow perfectly calibrated CV1 or they are not explorers and are just in it for the pew-pew. Banding does not really show up in bright regions of space, nor in starports, nor in ships interiors and exteriors...When fighting you are not focused on space environment, so maybe those people just don't notice it.

Could be but tough not to notice it I mean I can see it just about anywhere the light changes. When you pop in at a star and go to circle it if you do not see some banding there you have miraculously fixed it somehow.

Looks like all that complaining might have helped, at least to give the issue priority. Way to go FD! Looked forward to trying the release version. How are the washy colors near stars looking -any improvement in the lighting effect?

Any word on a release date? I looked last night and could not find anything. Anxious to see this we have waited a long time just for some promising news like this.

My rift is by no means, bad, not perfect. And no, last time I went exploring I almost chewed my leg off.

I find it opposite, the banding would get MORE noticeable the further out from a star you would get, and I saw it in my vive as well, all the tiny transitions in the galaxy dust is\was banding central.
Then again I noticed the banding on my monitor long before I got a rift so it isn't exactly surprising it would be there.

This is me of course, I'm a bit of an AV nutter, since I have both my front projector and TV calibrated to Delta e of less than 1 with professional calman software and a klein 10a, so I sadly know what to look for.
And the issue simply this.
If we could get our screens calibrated 90% of all banding issues would disappear.
The rest is in the art assets themselves, and they are far far from perfect, and of course whatever issues being introduced in the rendering engine's compression.

As far as I am concerned, dithering is a bit of a shortcut, a cop-out if you will.
But here it seems to be implemented well, and I swear they prettied up some nebula details as well.

That said, I'm probably the only one I know outside of AV forums that can actually spot banding issues, so the fact many don't see them is not surprising.

Finally got round to trying it. Dithering solves one of the two big problems, and I am over the moon. I've had to have the gamma all the way up to avoid the banding but now I can have the night sky dark again and I am over the moon about it.

Fix the black smearing and I promise I'll never complain again!

Man I can't wait till this dithering goes on the release!!
This is the first time I wished I had purchased beta access!

What headset do you use? I hardly notice black smear in CV1.

Please make sure that the feature is possible to turn off so that vive users do not need to suffer loss of performance and image sharpness.

I haven't noticed any performance hit at all, and there seems to be be no issues with sharpness either. But that is my rift. Your vive may be different.
