Abridged is an understatement. The Normans were more Viking than French, Germanic people weren't Germans and even if they were it is missing out the 'Anglo' part of 'Anglo-Saxon'. Fair enough plenty of people are oblivious to many parts of our history and what makes us up but saying we are basically all French and German immigrants is equally ignorant.
The Normans of the 'Norman Conquest'(1066) spoke French, William spoke French (as did his court) and it is the reason for the development of the English language as it is (full of french words).
The Anglo-saxons were 'Germanic' of origin (meaning they mostly came from the Germanic tribe regions that later became Germany in the modern era), they spoke a Germanic language that became the modern German, and that Germanic language is what the Anglo-Saxons also spoke and is the reason for the development of the English language as it is (full of German words).
The English language you or I speak and write, the one that Chaucer (1343-1400) wrote and then later Shakespeare (1564-1616), would not have existed without the German(ic) and French influences, we'd all be speaking a form of Welsh (or more correctly Cymraig, the 'Welsh' is a Danish term for 'foreign') otherwise.
Really before you try to convince anyone of an alternative origin theory, note i know quite a bit about ancient peoples and languages and their roots, which is why i always find Nationalistic ideologies truly false (clue: we are ALL immigrants, yes even my beloved 'Welsh'(native Britons); they only arrived here after the last ice age, from Europe).
If your family has roots in southern england you are most likely from german/french/brittonic stock.
If your family has roots in northern england you are most likely from scandinavian/danish/brittonic stock.
If your family is from those pockets of western (north as in scotland south as in cornwall) britain you are most likely from that northern french/belgium/dutch region as that is where the landbridge was for a while after the last ice age.
Obviously there has been lots of gene mixing through all this movement of peoples.
So the bottom line is even the most native of british people are european in origin. We are all europeans, the English more so than many as your whole language is based on that Germanic/French tradition.
Go check wikipedia for some sources, it's all very well documented and studied

Back to football. So do we have a chance vs Belgium? They did beat us earlier, which is not that great a sign, also after that gut-wrenching defeat by Croatia how 'up for it' can the team really be?
I hope we can make a small miracle as England deserves something out of this WC, a Bronze is better than nothing right?
