General / Off-Topic FIFA World Cup

It was the passes back that were worse, a number of times the defenders were putting pressure on an already pink faced Pickford with silly passes back to him inches away from charging Croatian strikers. There was one moment towards the end of the second there were four really stupid passes in succession that you wonder how Croatia didn't seal it then.

I'm Welsh and even I was screaming at the screen...

I wanted to go on the pitch and point out to the english team which direction they needed to go in order to find the Croatian goal!

Indeed, you seem to be a bit hazy on a few bits yourself, but let's not go further off topic.

France to win for me, they look to have too much all round talent for Croatia to overcome.

It was about as abridged as i could make a 500 years chunk of our recent history, and i agree on your assessment of France, just too good overall vs Croatia.

I'm feeling very disappointed and sorry for England. I'm not English but thought they had a likeable team, for a change. I think it's like watching a fairy story come true - England winning another world cup is like a unicorn appearing. And England could really do with a boost with all this Brexit division.

I think they made the most of their talent - unlike the team of say 12 years ago. That is commendable. They were a proper team. Had they gone in two up it would have been a different story.

Yea I am still feeling kinda sad.

Congratulations Croatia.

You saved us from a zenophobic English press by first defeating Russia. If we had played them in the semi final, the papers in the UK would have been an even bigger disgrace in their anti russian coverage leading upto the semi.
Now you have saved us from having to play the French in the final, which would have resulted in hackneyed and cliched anti french retoric that the press are so happy to parade whenever the UK and France have a disagreement on something.

If you are that worried about it perhaps it would be easier to just not read the 'red tops'? Surely a simpler solution than willing England out of the world cup to save you having to read something that may or may not be printed that you don't like?

Anyway; since we have been knocked out I hope France wins. They are our closest neighbour, Entente Cordiale and all that..... plus Patrick is a really nice chap.

Vive la France :)

Abridged is an understatement. The Normans were more Viking than French, Germanic people weren't Germans and even if they were it is missing out the 'Anglo' part of 'Anglo-Saxon'. Fair enough plenty of people are oblivious to many parts of our history and what makes us up but saying we are basically all French and German immigrants is equally ignorant.

@khaos526, If your English, you are probably French (descended from), 1066 and all that etc (History and why the English language has so many French words in it). So don't hate yourself!

Nope and nope. Think more northern. 0 Frenchy in my family tree's history on both ends. Going all the way back, it's Norse (a very long time ago), French, not one bit. So there's no hating here, just proud to be English through and through and generation after generation. So that's why Croatia for the cup and England for 3rd...

The Normans of the 'Norman Conquest'(1066) spoke French, William spoke French (as did his court) and it is the reason for the development of the English language as it is (full of french words).

The Anglo-saxons were 'Germanic' of origin (meaning they mostly came from the Germanic tribe regions that later became Germany in the modern era), they spoke a Germanic language that became the modern German, and that Germanic language is what the Anglo-Saxons also spoke and is the reason for the development of the English language as it is (full of German words).

The English language you or I speak and write, the one that Chaucer (1343-1400) wrote and then later Shakespeare (1564-1616), would not have existed without the German(ic) and French influences, we'd all be speaking a form of Welsh (or more correctly Cymraig, the 'Welsh' is a Danish term for 'foreign') otherwise.

Really before you try to convince anyone of an alternative origin theory, note i know quite a bit about ancient peoples and languages and their roots, which is why i always find Nationalistic ideologies truly false (clue: we are ALL immigrants, yes even my beloved 'Welsh'(native Britons); they only arrived here after the last ice age, from Europe).

If your family has roots in southern england you are most likely from german/french/brittonic stock.
If your family has roots in northern england you are most likely from scandinavian/danish/brittonic stock.
If your family is from those pockets of western (north as in scotland south as in cornwall) britain you are most likely from that northern french/belgium/dutch region as that is where the landbridge was for a while after the last ice age.

Obviously there has been lots of gene mixing through all this movement of peoples.

So the bottom line is even the most native of british people are european in origin. We are all europeans, the English more so than many as your whole language is based on that Germanic/French tradition.

Go check wikipedia for some sources, it's all very well documented and studied :)

EDIT: Sorry TJ i did not see the post above until after i posted! I've said all that needs to be said (to correct misconceptions) so am out of it now.

Back to football. So do we have a chance vs Belgium? They did beat us earlier, which is not that great a sign, also after that gut-wrenching defeat by Croatia how 'up for it' can the team really be?

I hope we can make a small miracle as England deserves something out of this WC, a Bronze is better than nothing right?

If it comes down to a choice of watching Belgium v England or playing Elite for a couple of hours then Elite wins hands down, (I'm English).

Anyway it doesn't matter, I'm off to a classic car show
