FINALLY scraped together enough for an Asp - Outfitting Help please

Finally pottering around trading Rares I've got the 20M I was after to be able to head to Jameson Memorial in my T6 and buy the Asp Explorer I wanted
I have a pretty good Cobra docked elsewhere that I can use for pew-pew fun so this will be jack of all trades big brother: some passengers, some explorering, but weapons for the odd blat too.

What do you recommened please?

Be ultra careful with kitting out the bigger ships as their price tag is way beyond the cost of their initial purchase. The AspX is slow, and a big target especially compared to your Cobra. You will want to check something like edshipyard.com for the cost of at least A rated engines and FSD. For weapons you can always go for multi cannons, especially since they are low on power draw so you can skimp on the power plant initially. Since the Asp is big and fat you will want proper shields, and a jack of all trades may not have room for banks, so I guess A grade those too.

To be honest, I would D rate everything and put as many economy passenger cabins as you can... (I think the Asp can carry 60 w shields) Run passenger missions for a couple of days. That should net you a couple hundred million. Then come back and upgrade her to the tilt with money to spare.

Slow? It literally moves and turns like an FDL just with the minor issue of acceleration.

Start with Basic Aspx

Fill out the optionals with whatever fits what your primary goal is (trading/passengers/mining)

make sure you have at LEAST 3 rebuys in the bank.

Have a blast.

(the military hull can be downgraded to a reinforced to save some credits, but I wouldn't)

I think every Asp I fly (except the cheapskate mission-miners) is worth around Cr40m - which is kind of amazing for a Cr5m ship. [where is it]

Moving up to an Asp was, for me, a very precarious time in ED.
I was chuffed to buy it, I fitted some upgrades but then, the first time I got into combat, I got trounced, almost lost the ship and then I swapped back into my Cobra and earned another Cr20m or so before giving the Asp the upgrades (and engineering) it really needs before it sharpens up.

Why go to Jameson? Head to a system in Li space and get it for a better discount (15%), which also lowers the rebuy.

The modules are also 15% off, which lowers the rebuy even more.

Might be a bit of a long trip, depending on where you're at, but may be worth the extra effort. That extra 5% might be the difference between waiting on a given upgrade, or being able to get it now.

This is my old Asp that I used during the Robigo days, I think. Those days were long ago. Maybe I had an ADS on there at the time. https://coriolis.io/outfit/asp/05A5...040404054a02022t0124.Iw18WQ==.Aw18WQ==?bn=Asp

Even before engineering it had superb straightline boost speeds and was quite capable in a fight for the most part. Even when the fight was lost that boost speed made getting out of dodge more of a reality than a hope and dream.

I suppose with engineering it can only be a better ship nowadays. With plenty of room for optional internals it is a fine multi-role ship easily configured for the job at hand.

Enjoy the ship OP. It will serve you well!

I'd suggest you use the Cobra for the fighting, and do everything else bar combat in the Asp. This way, you don't need a top power plant, and you can engineer thrusters to go over 500m/s. Just run away laughing.

I've a combat asp, and while it's ok at everything fully engineered, equipping it for this purpose compromises other things too much for me. It basically just sits there. My utility asp, however, is very much in demand, and always will be.

Hello CMDR, I would D rate the sensors and life support to start. Then install two medium multicannons and four small pulse lasers. Open up with the lasers to drop enemy shields and then finish them off with the hull shredding multicannons.

Another good alternative, though maybe a bit more $$$ due to ammo costs, is four small SEEKER missiles, and two medium pulse lasers. Quite devastating that in my experience.

As for optional internals, go with the biggest shield you feel comfortable, a fuel scoop (the higher the rating here the better as it reduces refill time), a cargo rack, passenger cabin and SRV bay.

You might not be able to fit everything you want in one go, but I bet you can get pretty close. For utility mounts, maybe a Chaff Launcher, Kill Warrant scanner and Shield Boosters.

Should you fit shield boosters, IF YOUR SHIELD DROPS IN COMBAT, GO INTO THE RIGHT MENU UNDER MODULES AND IMMEDIATELY UNCHECK THEM/TURN THEM OFF in order to get your shield back faster.

Always, always, ALWAYS UPGRADE THE POWER PLANT LAST. I find outfitting everything I want first will give me an idea of precisely how much power I need. If you are close to the power you need but still fall a bit short, that's ok, go to Felicity Farseer and have her upgrade the power plant with the OVERCHARGED option. Even a level 1 or 2 will yield significant increases in output.

Don't forget to set the Cargo Scoop, Fuel Scoop, SRV Bay and FSD all to number 2 in the MODULES power hierarchy. This might help you as well when it comes to managing your MODULES when you are just shy of power to run everything.

I hope my advice helps and if you need anything, just ask. Fly safe Commander. The Asp Explorer is one of the staple ships in this game, she is a fine choice.

I hate to be a naysayer, but I don't feel that your stated goals are compatible. I rather agree with the post above about making money in passenger hauling, but I would not use the cash to make a "does everything" ship since it will not do anything Well.

Get the cash and buy a couple of ships optimized for specific functions. It may be a bit on the annoying side to have to go chase down those ships, but you'll be a lot more satisfied with doing whatever takes your fancy when you use dedicated functions.

Way back in the day I used my Asp X as my Rares Trade runner. I focused the build on high jump range and not so much on combat. This was long before we had the engineers so my max jump range was just about 30Ly which back then was excellent and on the high end of what you could reach.

I did have weapons on board, but I didn't actively engage in combat. I would instead evade interdictions at all times and high wake if I lost. This build served me well for a good 6 months before I eventually upgraded to the Python. It was at that time that I shifted my gameplay from trade over to combat.

The Asp X shields are its weak point, so in my opinion that kind of nixes it from being a truly capable combat ship. Defensive combat, fine. But I would not suggest putting too much effort into a combat build. You are going to loose against a good number of NPC piloted ships.

Thanks all.
I’m not really too hot on combat anyway what I meant was the ability to fight back occasionally when interdicted instead of always running away as I do in my weaponless T6.
The original goal was explore the bubble in the 70 stop Rare run, then go further afield in the Asp.
As GG7 says though these plans were formed nearly 2 years ago when I last played and I’m slightly overwhelmed that things have seemingly changed so much - 20m back then was what I had been advised was the cost to kit out the Asp for that plan.

I guess long range passenger mission is what I’d really like to do in it first and head out to Thargoid-ville to see alien stuff.

Other thing I want to do “just cos” is get the Alioth permit and the Sol one but seemingly Sol is much harder to get so I’ll try for the Alioth one as it’s nearer.

So I’m assuming the Cobra is better suited for permit missions?
But then to use the Asp as above and make it “safe” too how much should I spend and on what?
I’m not yet on horizons so no Engineer access. My plan was D-rated stuff first then A-rated as I can afford.
It would be nice to have the important stuff A-rated from the get-go though.

I appreciate it’s not how everyone plays. I’m not obsessed with credit grinding. But yes after the Asp I’ll aim for a Python but I’m happy to chill and slow and steady so they really feel like “rewards” for me.

Btw is there any need for the T6 alongside the Asp and Cobra or should I trade it in as planned?

My PvE Battle Asp is an excellent CZ farmer and works well in a RES. It's not for PvP, but it can shred any NPC in short order.

All G1 Long Range Multicannons with one of the C2s being Corrosive. Besides the one Corrosive, there are no specials on the guns.

Thermal resist shields and I carry heat sinks to break target locks.

Other than that, it's just a vanilla A-Rated ship.

As mentioned above, go to a LYR system and take the 15% discount. The lower rebuy stays with you forever.

Great. That’s the plan. I’m okay with the A vs D but wasn’t sure what size (1-5) stuff I needed and what hardpoints to do as you suggest.
Also what’s my credit damage going to be?
20m suddenly feels like chump change!

Where abouts is this from Founders World?

Inara can help you find whatever you need.

https://inara.cz/galaxy-shipyard/

Just type in Asp and select the Asp Explorer, type in Shin and select Shinrarta Dezhra (or your current location) and click the "Just Discounted" tick.

Pay attention to the Station Distance in the list. That first one is 396k ls away.

It can find the stuff you want for outfitting too.

Forgot to mention that I used a 100% Multi-Cannon build for my Asp X when I had it kitted out back then. You could actually run gimbaled beam lasers as your mains if you wanted to, but MCs are light on power demands and seemed to be a better fit overall.

Especially when the main approach to flying a ship like this is to avoid combat encounters if at all possible. :)

Lastly... Shooting for the Python as your next milestone is a good plan. That is the route I took, and when you reach that point, you can branch out and start doing more combat focused missions and stuff. While some might claim that the Asp X can fill a similar role as the Python in being an "all-Rounder", I don't agree.

Those shields are its downfall in living up to that promise. :)

Brilliant - thanks.
95ly isn’t too far at all.
I always pay attention to station distance- bitter experience from my rare trading :D

That being said I’ve never done the Hutton Orbital run yet....
