General / Off-Topic Finding work after 40

Umm, you may want to do a bit of research there. The demographics have changed towards macs these days. At our company we have always allowed our devs to choose what they want to use. 10 years ago it was mostly windows. Now it's mostly mac. Very few linux.

IMO the reason is not very flattering to Apple. Because Apple do not (easily) allow their OS to be run on other platforms, a Mac is the only platform you can easily write software on all of the common o/ses - osx, windows, linux, ios, android, etc.

In fact it's getting to the stage where, because our software must be tested cross-platform, cross-os, desktop and mobile, we may even have to enforce Mac usage. I don't like that :/

Back in the day it was Spectrum Cmd64 BBC Micro Atari St Amiga. The dream of write once deploy many. Today the software barriers are artificial to capture market share for hardware.

LOL! - I was being flippant :D
My real experience is that macs are used moreso by front-end developers and designers, because somehow a text-editor and photoshop are better on a mac... go figure on that one.
As for writing software for the mac (and cross-platform) - MS Visual Studio 2015 allows you to do this now, on a PC. Still a good idea to compile on a Mac for certain things though.

The new version of asp.net (asp.net core) runs natively on mac & linux. SQL Server is coming to linux next year - M$ are going open-source and cross-platform - it's a whole new world!

Also when you see someone use a computer on TV its a Mac.

However when it come to Elite PCs take take you to the Horizon

Ever thought about employing yourself? You've got the chance now to do something completely different. Absolutely nothingg to loose. Stop thinking in that I'm a software developer box. Yyou can do whatever you want now. You just need to go for it. I was a consultant left that job and started my own company in a totally different field which I absolutely had no knowlwdge about before. 100% risk. 6 years later now, the company has 20 employees.

Start a business together guys. ED forum is a great network with like minded people.

Maybe code some addon to Elite and sell for £xx to ED community.

What type of area is your company involved in? Any Vacancies? Thanks for the suggestion.

Frontier is probably hiring...

I already 'work' for Frontier as a Beta tester for free :)

I did a degree in Astronomy so I always make a note of the accuracy of the galaxy :) Hopefully the real Galaxy is not under threat from real Thargoids :)

It would be cool to go to an interview to find that they also Play Elite rather than ask me about my Golf Handicap..

Real Life this time. Seeking work after 40 used to be a software developer. Living on £73 a week any help full suggestions..

i'm very surprised you can't land another job as a sw dev, they are in high demand almost everywhere. maybe not a dream job, but something viable should show up pretty quickly. age shouldn't be a problem either. maybe it's your location? time to move, then, but i've seen several colleagues move to the uk or ireland for a job, there must be something. and remoting is becoming very frequent. if your skillset is outdated don't worry, your experience is still valuable, just pick any tool in demand and recycle a bit. java, python, js, c ... anything will do, they can't have enough of it.

or are you fed up with development altogether?

I changed jobs in August after 12 years with the same employer. My previous experience got me the job, and I've had 4 weeks of training with another week to go. I get the impression my new employer is a much better "fit" for me.
I'm 43 , and proof that you're still employable after 40.

All you need is your previous experience, a positive outlook and good social skills be able to talk to people. Academic qualifications become less important than relevant experience as you progress through your career path.

The simple answer is most development got outsourced so local teams are smaller.
