I was just thinking that there is more than a few platinum out there, so instead of flying to the nearest one I can just go to the anarchy one that is some 6ly from here. I gather self-destruct will not erase the debt?

the smuggeling fines make no sense at the moment. First of all, things you find in outer space should not be considered as smuggeling, unless the commodity is illegal in that system/station. second, even if you have illegal commodities and you get scanned by the police, you STILL can sell the stuff. How does that make sense? It´s like when the police finds a large amount of cocain they just put a fine on the drug-smuggler but they can still sell them...

Fines for stolen cargo

The fines are ridiculous....they way its' setup right now as soon as you pickup some booty you have to go straight back to a station to sell it as the fines are far in excess of the cargo value.

tbh the whole idea of cargo being tagged as stolen is a pain in the bum.

FD need to sort this out really to make piracy worthwhile.....

would be a nice buff for piracy to sell stolen cargo somewhere near the full price, but i could care less for the fine be it higher, lower or remain the same; it just doesn't change anything for a pirate.

Find an outpost with a black market and your problems go away.

Would you rather they just opened fire?
In most cases the fine is higher than a potential profit anyway.

There's a proper way to smuggle items. If you're interested PM and I'll pass on what I've learned. I can get into any station avoiding detection roughly 98% of the time.

Thats actually very easy. Just set throttle to max and 4 pips to engine. You can smuggle in a Type-7 that way.

I'm talkign about getting scanned at a RES or nav beacon while hunting.....

A fed ship can just flyby and scan you.....which means if you want to pickup cargo you have to take it straight to a station to sell it. Getting it into the station is easy...just dock at speed.

At the moment I just don't bother picking it up, I'm likely to pickup a fine (25k last night for maybe 8ks worth of stock) it's easier and more profitable to just move onto the next wanted NPC instead. It's silly that it makes more sense to leave valuble cargo drifting in space.

It's not piracy, it's smuggling! That's why you need to learn where to take such items to sell them, or learn to evade the scans and security at stations. That's one of the reasons the ships have a stealth mode. It takes practice and is not always 100% successful, but it can be done. Don't pick up anything mundane though, make it worth your while.

Or learn to sneak into stations.

The guy is right. I stopped picking up cargo from killed pirates a long time ago. While hunting for more pirates, some Authority vessel scans you and fines you at the spot. At least only give fine for cargo that is illegal. This is ridiculus.

Selling the cargo is not the problem.

The thing people will agree with is the re-sale value of these items on the black market is particularly poor, it's been mentioned in other threads and I hope FD revise the risk v reward of stolen goods.

What are you talking about? If he/she sneaks into a station, they don't get a fine.

Explain yourself.

Right, I see his/her follow up post about nav beacons. The obvious answer is to sell immediately or duck and dive, hit the chaff and speed away when the scan warning comes in.

he's talking about looting wanted at RES / Nav beacon.

should you kill a wanted then loot him, by the time you kill the next you will be scanned and fined 90% of the time, meaning that:

1- either ou don't pickup the cargo
or
2- you kill one, pick up cargo, go sell it rince and repeat.

tldr wanted dropping cargo is non sense given the actual mechanic since one cannot be efficient taking them anyway

the issue lies on the fact that you get scanned & fined in the RES / Nav, so either the scan should be removed, or looting cargo dropped by a wanted should not result in illegal cargo, at least in non-anarchy system
