First exploration

The estimate is that there are 400 billion star systems in the galaxy, and that's the assumption that FDev seems to use when they mention percentages. Less than 0.02% of that is known to EDSM, and I think no more than about 0.05% (or maybe 0.06%) has been discovered overall in-game. I don't remember the exact number for the latter, and of course it changes over time. In any case, it's below a tenth of a percent. ;)

It’ll take about a month to see the tag then :)

It says in this screenshot I've been 1st to discover 11 systems ?
I haven't had any notification in game

Regarding being the one to discover a system: once you enter the system (drop from the witchspace), immediately look at your radar. If you see the star depicted there, then the system has been already discovered and reported by someone else... If you see no star and it only appears after a couple of seconds, then this system has not yet been discovered and you are first explorer to visit it...

You only get the notification when you hand the data in. Part of this is staying alive to do that, if you die before handing it over, it’s all gone.

You will get used to what ‘being there first’ looks like in game. When you first arrive in a system, you’re normally staring at some huge star, if that star isn’t showing straight away on your radar, most likely, you are the first.

You will have landed in a few systems where the main star and other bodies are on your radar without even honking, someone has been there before you.

Edit: Ninja’d!

Okay but once I've honked a system I got into system map and has always said "first discovered by....."
Its confusing

Then someone has already visited that system and sold the data. If nothing else, at least the system (main) star.

YAAAAAAAAAAAY
Just jumped into a system where no-one has been 😃😃

It said when I scanned it there are 9 bodies but the system map shows just the star ?
Correct.
You need to scan all the other bodies with FSS to get them to show up in the system map.

EDSM first discovered and in-game first discovered are completely separate. As others have noted, in-game first discovered requires you to be the first to sell the data to UC for it count as a discovery. A first discovered system in EDSM is the first to report that system to EDSM - it could have been visited by hundreds of players who don't submit data to EDSM. Similarly, because one triggers on data sale and the other on visiting, you could visit a system already known to EDSM but still get all the tags because the Commander who first submitted it to EDSM didn't sell the data to UC before you did.

Ah right that makes sense.

Little Chick flight report

I've travelled 1,550.07 ly from start point
Max jump distance tonight 8 Ly
Scanned 29 systems, 1 unique 😊 with 9 planets.
1 non unique but with 6 unique planets.
1 Terraform which I'm now parked up on for the night
Scanning and mapping was the main thing tonight hence the low travel distance

Chick Out o7
