First time in VR. Holy Mary, Mother of God.

Welcome to VR OP ! - check out some of my vids to see the possibilites (oh, and I never feel sick - )
I'm green with envy right now! Those are awesome and worthy of a big double exclamation mark ‼

I'm also amazed how thin the support/motion rods are and they still hold the thing in place and rock it like it's no tomorrow :D
Nice engineering skills! I tip my hat off to you good sir :D o7

Holy smokes! That is pretty incredible for something built in your spare time! Overachiever!

I can't decide if my favorite part is you drinking a beer on a motion simulator, or that you have a Cray II supercomputer behind a red tarp with a handwritten TOP SECRET sign in your garage! Good stuff.

vr sickness is equal parts your own body fighting your eyes and equipment.

if you have high end stuff and your framerate is great and your goggles are high resolution (so you're not looking at blurry text all the time or other artifacts related to vr goggles) and you still get nauseous then you may just be SoL. Your brain is fighting your eyes and inner ear and that might get better over time, but it's not gonna be fun training it. Some people just get motion sickness and will always get motion sickness and some grow out of it if they force themselves.

there's nothing wrong with limiting your time in vr though. I tend to only use it when i'm getting ready to do some dogfighting. VR is best for combat. But i dont get vr sick, so i can be in there for hours if i want. Just kinda boring doing other things other than combat after a while and not being able to multitask on other screens.

Wasn't me who built it, the quote's gone wrong somewhere along the lines.

I have, several in fact (check the vids in my sig). Movement when in VR was the next logical step for better immersion.
I now run a Pimax VR headset in wide-angle and have the motion rig finely tuned to ED. The experience is immense - everytime.

We've talked before but your setup really is something @blastard o7

My main account is in Colonia currently and I am spending a few days mining Tritium (an hour a day) to get some extra reserves.
Now that the PWA is fixed (yippee 🥳) I've been out having a ball flitting around mainly SSD mining - VR wins hands down for the convenience of fire off the PWA and look out around for the yellow glowing rocks...

There is still nothing quite so impressive as mining a rock in very close proximity to a rotating 'roid... The feeling of jeopardy is almost tangible

I just got back from a Rocket Tea run myself. and could not help but constantly think, "This will be a really wild ride in VR!!" This time out I had quite a few of those huge oblong fast rotators that have 4 or 5 rich SSD veins that are a beyotch to mine, but also fun, as you have to dodge the projections that protect the SSD veins as they swoop around to clobber your ship. My Miner'Vette has good hull specs but is a little undershielded , so one good hit can put a serious dent in the bi-weaves! My directional thrusters are always
in play, so I think it will be both a blessing and a curse to be able to look around and see what normally is out of my view in pancake land. A lot of "Holy s*** " moments no doubt. The ring I was mining was not particulalry dense, though, the wildest ride will be in the really crowded rings, where dodging 'roids is as critical as popping minerals.

A good friend of mine used to mine in an unshielded Cutter (I did warn him) back in the Void Opal glory days... Until he was clobbered by a huge 'roid that was closer than he thought... He had 300+ tons mined at the time!

I use a Python (with prismatics) for mining - just because by the time it is full with 190 tons I'm ready to return to the carrier, and it is quite nimble with fully engineered drives :)

I liked my Miner'thon a lot but for one characteristic -- the dang canopy icing up inside an icy core! I cherish visibiiity and that was just the pits. I mean, in 3306 they haven't heard of defrosters? ;)

The 'Vette allows me to use all possible mining tools and some in multiples to avoid synth reloads, plus it will carry over 500T once I finally get around to finding another size 7 cargo rack. This is cool for mining but also for deiiveries -- just swap the miner's hardpoints for real guns (and I got some big'uns in storage :D) and tote that barge off to payday!

To wrap up and put a bow on my VR saga...

Per my comments earlier in this thread, I went to buy an Oculus Quest 2 of my own today. And there are none to be found anywhere. Not Amazon, B&H, Gamestop, Best Buy, Walmart, Target, not even direct from Oculus. Out of stock everywhere in the world. I checked a retailer on Enceladus and they said "6 weeks". Even Jameson Memorial -- which supposedly has "everything" -- turned up nothing. Maybe I should have checked at Hutton... you can get one free there, I've heard.

Most places were saying in stock the third week of January. Best Buy's website said I could get local pickup this coming Saturday, which was the soonest of any site I found. So I bit the bullet and paid an extra $30 in tax. Beats waiting another month.

In the meantime, I'll steal blocks of time on my son's Quest when possible to continue my acclimation. Just sucks not being able to play my own Commander! My son's ships are pretty cool, yeah -- but MY ships are REALLY cool. You know how it is. I guess I could run some rep/mats/credits quests on my own "Computer of ultimate 2D flat-ness". I've been saving for a Carrier and am at 4.2B right now. It wouldn't be the worst thing if my first VR act with my own Commander was to buy a new carrier. :)

Thanks again everyone for your overwhelming response and for making this a fun thread! o7

Another advantage of VR - well possibly, I've not actually tried it. Move the headset to the side, reset viewpoint, then put it back on. Sure, the console won't line up, and you'll have your headless body next to you, but you'll be out of the way of that damned FDL canopy strut.
A thousand times yes.

Whats all this about frame rates affecting VR etc? I run all my games at 30 fps and can't tell the difference if I run them at 30, 60, 120, 144 etc so I don't bother and just have everything on max setting.

Tried my daughters Rift S and smooth as silk with no issues at all... admittedly I have great 'sea legs' and spent lots of time in simulators when in the force though...

You're blessed with obliviousness, don't go searching for what's wrong with 30fps, you're better off, trust me 😂
In all seriousness, motion reprojection systems are very good with current generation of headsets. Enjoy while you can :D

As I understand it, higher framerate improves the overall perception of almost all of a game's visual aspects, though for some aspects and players it may be somewhat less than noticeable. The principal aspect, though, is when rapid movement occurs, either from game assets moving or player view motion. There is a visual phenomenon called strobing that can occur at lower frame rates that can be less than pleasant to experience. Live action movies and such that run at 24 - 30 fps tend to not show strobing because of motion blur, which is how we usually perceive fast motion IRL. But CGI-generated motion blur is either too expensive performance-wise (for naturalistic blur) or really ugly (the kind some games currently attempt). It's been improving but not quite fully realized yet. Having more frames per second in the perceptual stream prevents strobing without resorting to clunky fake motion blur techniques.

I guess I'm wired a bit differently then as I don't notice much/if any difference when running stuff at higher FPS. That's mainly the reason why I don't bother, even in fast twitch based games like CS:GO and such. Ah well I'll count myself lucky that I don't have these issue that other are getting :)

I notice it bit Im so used to playing games at 10 FPS I just dont mind.

It's now legitimately hard to imagine playing it any other way.
There's no coming back... no way out of this tunnel CMDR. Once you try VR you can't play pancake anymore. Same for any other game. I also play flight simulator and now that Microsoft released the VR version I can't play it on screen anymore.

Only other game l play is Vtol. Now much like elite the VR is outstandingly realistic. But!!!@
Theres an horizon..... And that can make you really queasy in a furball dogfight.
I'm not talking missiles at dawn 30 miles apart I'm talking up close n personal with mini guns and sidewinders.
After a few hours on that I need a sarnie and some flat oled tv to reacquaint me with the real world hehe. Tummy is now well used to it.
VR is amazing. Can't wait till I get a new hmd I didn't have one under the tree!
