Fleet carrier interiors mean tritium transfer needs a rethink

I run a fleet carrier called Sleeper Service. It shuttles between the Bubble and Colonia on a regular basis, giving any and all commanders a free ride and fleet/module transfer, and has done so for the past nine months, transporting hundreds of commanders. I've just upped the frequency to weekly, along with another commander, as part of the Fleet Carrier Owners Club's newly launched Colonia Shuttle.

My carrier is my primary ship. I only have two other ships on that account: a Phantom for errands, and a T9 for transferring tritium from my cargo hold to the depot. My journeys to and from Colonia are currently spent in the cockpit of the T9.

When carrier interiors were confirmed, my first thought was: fantastic! I will spend the travel time sitting on the bridge, saying "engage" and watching jumps with the passengers, rather than squashed into my crummy old T9 in the hangar. But my second thought was... wait. That's not what's going to happen. Here's the real gameplay loop:

  • Plot, wait for, and enjoy the jump from the bridge
  • When the depot’s nearing empty…
  • Get the elevator down to the hangar
  • Run to the T9 and board the ship
  • Transfer tritium from the T9 to the depot
  • Transfer tritium from the cargo hold to the T9
  • Disembark and run back through the hangar to the elevator
  • Take my seat on the bridge, with my passengers wide-eyed in incredulity that the captain has to do all that themself

This is not my idea of the satisfaction and accomplishment of carrier ownership that the CMs spoke about on the stream on Thursday. I'm not going to enjoy these elevator rides any more because I chose what colour they are.

I say this is a great opportunity to revisit the mechanics of getting tritium from the cargo hold of the carrier into the depot. We've all seen all the NPCs loitering in the corridors of carrier interiors - maybe one or two of them could head down to the cargo hold and transfer the fuel for me? Then I can sit in that comfy-looking ready room and enjoy the jumps with a glass of something nice, instead of sprinting back and forth to transfer fuel every jump.

As a minimum, please let us access the interior panel of the currently active ship from chairs on the carrier bridge, so we can remotely transfer without having to go down to the hangar in person. But ideally, why not introduce something a little more straightforward, like an option for the carrier to keep the depot topped up automatically as long as there's tritium available in the cargo hold?

I can't wait to chat to my passengers in the Sleeper Service bar and social areas. I'm really looking forward to issuing my first jump command from the captain's chair on the bridge. But unless there's an improvement in fuel transfer mechanics, I'm just going to be stuck in the T9 for the foreseeable. That'd be a real shame because carrier interiors look fantastic.

Thanks for reading. If you agree, please do add your voice below.

This and auto plot . We tell the carrier captain we want you there . The captain says ok it takes ( same out of the as we plot now ) this long and we will need authorisation to pull trituim from commodities market . You agree and the jumps ( again cool time and jump time as is now ) and the FC will arrive at the time . We have many explorers who sit all day plotting every 20 mins .

So every 5 or 6 jumps you need to actually visit your ship ... terrible.

Would be nice to have tritium xfer, but hey, I'll survive.

Be about 8 really wouldn't it? 125t of Tritium per jump? You could do it for a lot less with a stack of alts and T9's and an empty hold with no services, 68T per jump, only once every 14 jumps. You could do 7kly per full tank of fuel and only need to visit alts to top it up 3 or 4 times during the trip!

I think that new content generally goes well with new mechanics. Fleet Carrier owners pay millions of credits weekly for upkeep and services, and are still required to personally handle the minutiae of their flying city. Some automation is left to be desired.

And honestly, anything that helps the community provide services for itself is probably a good idea.

Why are you doing this every jump? You also seem to be under the impression that the novelty of watching the jump won't fade.

There needs to be an easier way to do numerous things on fleet carriers. However trying to use the interiors being made as the reason it needs to be easier to move fuel is a joke.

I’ve edited the post to reflect not doing it every jump, which is fair. However Odyssey is all about getting commanders out of their ships, and the current refuel mechanism is an artificial tether to the ship. Why not embrace this as yet another reason to try to bring about change?

I agree, we should absolutely not need to run back and forth to our ships just to refuel the carrier, much less so as we are supposed to be the captains. I see a way to transfer fuel directly from within the bridge or captain's chair as the bare minimum needed to logically support the idea of carrier interiors from a gameplay perspective.

I would add that the ideal person to do this would be my npc crew fighter pilot, ( if you dont have one, they are a sweet credit sink ), as he needs to earn some of his 10% payout. Telepresence crew member or not, the least he could do was keep the tank topped up, even if I do have to ask him with a menu click.

Really though, you are right. Its a terrible, senseless loop, that needs to be improved upon with a button.

Tritium Depot - Fill from Cargo. 1 click <3

Woah, what is that? An "exploration" monster crammed with every conceivable service? Mine, by the way, only needs 72t /500Ly..

You just fill every possible cubic centimeter with Tritium, I have 8,000t left doing this current project but I usually head out with every single possible spot stuffed with Tritium and often a T9 loaded to get out of the bubble without wasting any! If they let me put some in my pockets I would do that also, but I fear that wouldn't be stable! I wish I could get rid of the market and use that space for Tritium also but alas that's not possible!

I can only assume that the reason Frontier still makes us use a ship for tritium transfer is to limit the number of jumps that a Carrier can perform while its owner is elsewhere.

But the same result could be achieved in Odyssey if I have to pull a "transfer tritium" lever on my Carrier's bridge.

I admit it, i laughed ... but yea, this is beyond ridiculous ...
I mean what's the use of the use of the guy you place at the Tritium Dealer role? He's payed to watch you manually transfer each time?

OP - are you assuming devs will remove the ability to refuel the FC from the ship?

My guess is that will remain the same. And you'll still be able to do everything from the ship the same way as you can now.

I agree, we should be able to do it from the bridge! we should absolutely not need to run back and forth to our ships just to refuel the carrier
