Fleet Carrier - Or is it Engineers 3.0?

I was just chatting with some friends, and talking about Elite and what the future might bring.. and then I terrible thought hit me.... What if Fleet Carriers is how FDev introduces Engineering 3.0.... Fleet Engineers....

  • Unlock all the new Fleet Engineers
  • Gain favours to unlock the new Fleet Engineers services
  • Unlock ability to buy/build Fleet Carriers
  • Unlock ability to outfit Fleet Carriers for specific roles, like Mining, Exploration, Combat, etc, etc
  • New stuff to collect and pay for these services/upgrades...

What if this is what FDev is working on when it comes to Fleet Carriers...

There's going to be some kind of grind involved. If it were just "They cost 1,000,000,000 credits", there are already too many people in the game that have enough money to just buy them.

They have to do something to make them unattainable for current players, otherwise the newness wears off immediately and they're no longer a big deal.

Quite frankly, I think it should be something like what you posted.

There could be a single FC base model which anyone can purchase for X credits and it has some basic functionality. Then, different expansion modules can be unlocked, depending on one's rank. For example, if one wants a particular combat-oriented module, it will require "Expert" combat rank while a more powerful version requires "Dangerous" and the best requires "Elite". Ditto for trade and exploration.

There could then be certain modules which are only available via Power Play, Federal Navy Rank, Imperial Navy Rank, etc.

Anyway, whatever they come up with, white knights like @Old Duck will just say it's perfect. ;)

(Some guy called me a white knight, so I had to prove him wrong.)

Seriously? Have they not read your posts? You're pretty balanced in your praise and criticism of the game. I'd probably put you on the more critical side of the fence, but not by much.

Don't forget there's "base building" (allegedly) right around the corner from when they are due to be introduced, and that is likely to be gated in some kind of stages, so it is quite feasible that Fleet Carriers are involved with that in some way we can't quite envisage yet.
FCs of course, will be free to Horizons owners; the next DLC will be paid for but not obligatory.

The new base will come with a Cobra MK V but only if you pre-ordered all three payed updates.

I think special non-fiat barter currency (engin. mats, guardian mats) long since replaced credits as the barrier to acquiring desirable new stuff.
OP may well be correct.

Whatever future brings I can't seem to be enthusiastic about Fleet Carriers as is. The whole concept just doesn't speak to me yet.
Thinking about employing engineers' mechanics to that? That sounds offputting even.
Who knows though.
I give FD chance to impress me.

I think it would be nice to be able to cart your whole fleet around the galaxy, but I suspect the outcry would be too loud.
Think of the fuss about ship transfer and what we ended up with. Tolerable, but hardly appealing.

If there ends up being a way t engineer them, I hope it is a vastly different process than normal engineering. Current engineering blows

The game has enough problems, no need to invent new ones.

(Some guy called me a white knight, so I had to prove him wrong.)

Meh. You don’t need to prove him wrong. When people use “white knight” as a pejorative term, it’s usually code language for “I’m a jerk but blame society for my problems instead of admitting my own shortcomings.”

I remember being called a white knight once by a guy that was stalking Mrs. Carnage. Let that sink in. :p

As to fleet carriers... I think we can probably assume there will be some grind involved to upgrade and maintain the ships. But I do hope it’s less intrusive than Engineers.
