Since we're already having Jumprange discussions....

Well heck, why not.

  • HyperDrive Grade 5 anyone?
  • Carriers can Defend themselves I've read... So would you rather have vanilla unengineered Weapon loadouts - or an Engineered Custom Weapon loadout? ;)
  • Cargo space should be a thing... So if someone is unhappy with x.xxx tons Cargo Space - why not go Cargo Grade 5 on it and slap on some Cargo Modules.
  • Multirole Carriers I hear you say? Might benefit from some Engineering, so you get the best out of all services.
  • if they can be flown from a Bridge (speculation/unknown).... I'm sure someone will lament "Oil tanker agility!" and seek Grade 5 on the Engines ;)

On the "all ducks are grey on the dark"

I'm not sure if all the grinding is a good idea. There must be lots of customization options though. Maybe hire and manage a ship crew and executive command deck control of the ship.

If you have to moan at all, at least moan about stuff that's actually happened.
What? You don't feel like grumbling about a hypothetical grind related to something that isn't in the game? What's wrong with you, Red? I suppose you're going to keep up with this madness by suggesting that it's impossible to have content that's free of anything repeatable, thus ensuring that the cycle of grind complaints will never end, because all gameplay is technically a grind. Get a hold of yourself, man!

The game has enough problems, no need to invent new ones.

(Some guy called me a white knight, so I had to prove him wrong.)

Oh my... That is a very controversial opinion, very. Almost of development companies do solving problems and updating contents at same time. And I am sure that there will be always same amount of problems in ED whether fixing that NOW or not. I think programing is not simple minus and plus. So I would rather have old problems and new contents both than only old problems.

I was just chatting with some friends, and talking about Elite and what the future might bring.. and then I terrible thought hit me.... What if Fleet Carriers is how FDev introduces Engineering 3.0.... Fleet Engineers....

  • Unlock all the new Fleet Engineers
  • Gain favours to unlock the new Fleet Engineers services
  • Unlock ability to buy/build Fleet Carriers
  • Unlock ability to outfit Fleet Carriers for specific roles, like Mining, Exploration, Combat, etc, etc
  • New stuff to collect and pay for these services/upgrades...

What if this is what FDev is working on when it comes to Fleet Carriers...
I don't care. I just want my carrier. Engineer stuff can be done on the side like I always did. I don't care if it takes a year or two. :)

I also fear that the fleet carrier won't only be expensive, but also locked behind a grind-wall. Its aquisition AND its maintenance. Though I think (hope?) OP is slightly exagerating.

And all this is only useless tinfoiling, we'll know when we will know, aka Beta release. Seriously, what are such threads even for? Do you think FD will read it and overthink their plans with regard to what theories the community is making up?

Possible, there were a bunch of engineers named that have still to appear. (the ones in bold subsequently have)

Captain Banner (Independent) – HIP 61061
Etienne Dorn – Jupang
Petra Olmanova – Asura

Elui Shera (Independent) – Conven
Kit Lange (Independent) – Torno
Lex Avermann (Independent) – Thrudihe
Marshall (Independent) – Na Zha
Matt ‘The Gunner’ Sorbis (Independent) – Lelabo
Mel Brandon – Luchtaine
Marsha Hicks – Tir

Plasma Piotr (Federation) – NLTT 9949
Trin Falcour (Independent) – Yavas

I don't see the point of fleet carriers really. I'd play solo anyway and it's going to be hell of annoying to maintain one I bet. I'm not gonna buy anything that just puts more grind into the game - it's annoying as it is already.

I think the next question will be how are you gonna dock your fleet onto the fleet carrier since you can only fly one ship at a time. For instance, you park the carrier outside the station where your other ships are stored, since the carrier is too big to enter the station. How then are you gonna transfer your fleet to the carrier if you are the one piloting the carrier? Unless you call the ships to the carrier and pay for an NPC to bring it, right now that would be the only way I suppose unless they introduce a new way of teleporting to and from. Or you can have a small shuttle that it is only large enough to carry the pilot that he can then fly to the station, then pack the shuttle onto your other ship that your are going to dock onto the carrier. Then unpack the shuttle to get another ship.

Would also be feasible that such a large ship like a carrier would require an NPC crew to man all the stations on it. It would be totally unrealistic to just have you, the pilot, on the ship. Which I would not mind being able to manage an NPC crew, train them up to have them perform their jobs better, to man the defenses whenever I'm off the ship...etc. Wouldn't even mind the cost of upkeep, since I have plenty of credits as it is and nothing to really spend it on. Maybe require you to travel around to different locations looking for specific crew to hire. Lets face it, the grind is here to stay, so lets at least make the grind that we're gonna have to do...mean something.
