flew with out a rebuy...

I flew without insurance (don't do this kids) I was fuel scooping and I went afk and died but instead of putting me in a sidewinder it offered a loan so I was able to keep my python

How long was this in the game? And why has no one else talked about it?

The loan was always in the Game. It is not very high. So it will not protect all your ships im every incident.
It was about 600k i last needed it. If it is higher now, i dont know.

Lol you went AFK while scooping? Didn't you have 2 seconds to point your ship away from the star and throttle up a bit? :p

At least you got away with it this time!

I'm currently dangerously close to not having the rebuy for my Anaconda at the moment. I spent a bit too much on those Prismatic shields. Lol

But I plan to sell my useless Clipper (again) when I log in, so that'll be 50~mil in the bank straight away. Lol

It's been talked about numerous times. It's even been salted heavily by those who didn't get a large enough loan to cover the ship they lost (usually due to their own mistakes) and left them flying something else instead. A few even rage quit over it.

It's been around for a looong time.

First Rule of Elite Dangerous: Don't fly what you can't buy.

The loan system is great for new players, however once your ships start costing big bucks they don't help much.

Or when/if you die a second time before you pay off the loan :-(

So, as you said, always fly with insurance :-D

Well I learned my lesson but they loaned me 5 mil and I'm master combat rank luckily I downgraded my shields and replaced and bought a 4b instead of a 5 a and now I have enough for 2 rebuys so hopefully i won't lose it

Insurance posts are the most common after offline posts. Has been a game mechanic since the original in 1980. My current insurance cost for my cutter is 46 million. You can fly without insurance, but at your own risk, if you die and complain all you will get is the BFH. (Bus Fare Home). name that quiz show boys and girls.

Flying without a re-buy is something we've all done once or twice, and something we all know not to do.

Happy the OP had enough, plus the loan, to get most of his ship back.

Question : If you take the loan, aren't you STILL flying without a rebuy ?

It's always worth remembering that the upgrades add to your rebuy cost much more than the hull does - My Corvette, for example has a 25M rebuy but the hull only costs 8M rebuy.

Let's say that I screwed up and was 10M short, even after a loan? I could deselect the things that are expensive but easy to replace and re-engineer later, then limp out of dock with a 300M Corvette build, rather than a 500M Corvette. It's not ideal, but it's better than a sidewinder.

I don't think you can take out a second loan whilst you're still paying off the first, so yes. The safe bet is to switch to a cheaper ship and only do safe-bet, easy-money missions for a bit until the loan's paid off and you have enough to rebuy your most expensive ship.

Yes and no, you won't have the rebuy money but you will be in the last dock you visited so won't be flying.

This will give you the chance to sort out your finances so you don't leave without 2 or 3 rebuys worth of money.
