For those who want to play Iron-Man

But for ironman? Unless there is an invulnerable clause added to the game, then the "Fansy's" among us would be ineffective. Besides, the difference in game mechanics just wouldn't allow it.

Wasn't suggesting Fansy's antics as something we should do, rather in reference to heroic people from the past that you remember. In IM I would like to think, given time, that some of us could earn a similar reputation and in years to come be remembered ...

Another one who springs to mind .. LOLMAN from Unreal Tournament (omg 20 years ago!) who used to play the game but detested snipers (on his side) so used to ping them off the towers using his pump gun. No idea who he was but constant laughs and so only fitting to be honoured today .. Bless you LOLMAN :)

If Iron-Man mode is a case of start with a sidewinder & 100Cr, play the game and when you die you are back to a start system, sidewinder & 100Cr and all ranking stuff reset, then I'm up for it. Especially as we have 3 commander slots to play with.

A Welshman? In IM play... Cooool :)
I live in Bristol but I grew up in south Wales. Hope the storms didn't batter you too much. Anyway... off topic...
See you in Space! :D

I am down on the Gower peninsula - we missed the worst of it, although a few places got a bit damp.

And yes, hope to see you in space soon!

A few years ago, Three Cliffs Bay was voted one of the 10 best beaches in the world by the travel industry. Well deserved, I thought. Catherine Jenkins is also a fan of it.

Last year (2013) it was Rhossili Bay - 3rd in Europe, 7th in the world

A few episodes of Dr Who and Torchwood have been filmed there, along with an M&S advert from last Autumn.

Heheh - topic drift...
I was walking the coast near the Mumbles not long ago. That won't be happening again for a while, unfortunately. I am more familiar with the coast around Tenby and Manorbier. Family there, etc...

Aaaaanywayyy. Something in another thread made me think that when we are walking around oustide our ships we will have to be very careful in IM. At least in a ship you will probably have some warning of an attack. EVA you could just get assassinated. I think there would not be a believable way of that not being the case in the game, which I am fine with but it will make me think very carefully before going EVA.

I was hearing about this 'Iron man mode' and was totally confused to what it was?, i realise now its what is more commonly known in the game word as 'Dead is dead' or DID for short.

As mentioned in another thread with very few exceptions, i always play DID / Iron-man in all games, i just cant justify my existence and find it hard to immerse myself in a game knowing that my 'character' is really dead..its always seemed like cheating to load a save game, and rather pointless playing in the first place.

Iron-man as you call it, gives genuine fear of loss, and thus effects your thoughts on how you play...i.e cautiously, not just firing in head long to multiple enemy's. Its also why i dont like multiplayer as people just go all out, all of the time because they just 're-start' if killed.

On some games where you would never get to see most of the game world if played in DID like Skyrim for example, i give myself a self imposed 3 lives.

Mostly though i always, and will for ED play DID / Iron-man, the only exception is if i die due to bugs, i.e auto pilot flys me into a space station or similar.

P.S @Demangler , where in Bristol are you?

As we will have 3 commander slots each, I will use one for IM, one for single player only, and one for 'normal' online play.

I've never heard the term "D.I.D." but "Ironman" several times :)
Anyways. Good to know there are several other people out there, with the same mindset as my own.

See you in space! :)

There goes Demangler, scourge of 7 systems, died whilst taking a swim. :D

Same here - I always called it Permadeath. In my experience Iron-Man meant an extra hard difficulty level where often you could not reload your save if you died. In E:D it is not more difficult in Iron-Man, but it is permadeath, so there is a sense of meaning to your choices and you don't have to share the universe with a lot of immortals who will all eventually be Elite no matter what they do.
With you on the Skyrim thing as well, although I find if I give myself more than one life then it just is not the same. I blogged my permadeath Skyrim antics here
P.S. ... Bishopstone. :D

Agree with you on that..

Bishopstone eh..one of the few places in Bristol i've not lived Lol, Born and Bread Bristolian here, but i moved the wee highlands of scotland some years ago...i live in the mountains now with a very slow internet connection, hope it still allows me to play single player online!!!

Pandemic Legion was my Alma Mater. So yeah, online terrorist. Not so much for profit. Mostly just because I'm a predator and haven't found anything half as thrilling as hunting nerds .. It really can't be beat. Such a thrill. Especially when they fight back! :p

I'll be Iron Man'ing it though. Anything else is just not fun. Mainly why I am so anti selective group switching: people will just abuse it horribly for advantage. Which takes a lot of the satisfaction out of hunting nerds.

Well...fortunately, not all of us want the same thing in a game.

I hope Iron-man mode is implemented for testing soon. Would make sense now that features of the grouping mechanism are creeping in.
If not I may start "testing" it on a voluntary basis after the next wipe anyway. Just do a clear save if I get killed, although I anticipate that if there are many deaths due to bugs then I won't keep it up for long....
