For those wondering whether to upgrade to a Rift S

Been a backer of Oculus since the DK1 days and for the last few years rocked the old CV1.

It was getting a bit old and battered, but the Rift S are out of stock everywhere, or so I thought.
Argos (UK) had them at list price £399 and got it delivered to a Sainsbury (foc) and 3 days early to boot.

For those debating whether to upgrade, do it, it is well worth it.

  1. Much more comfortable
  2. Inside out tracking, so no extra sensors which constantly force you (me) to reset HMD view. No longer the case for over 3 hours testing in ED
  3. New hand controllers are much nicer
  4. Being able to click a button and see a black and white live camera feed and see your keyboard is VERY nice.
  5. Longer cable, which is nice
  6. BUT beware - it requires a display port, lucky I had one spare on my 1080
And it costs less than the CV1 :)

Happy bunny.

I have been tempted for a while now but I am not keen on the audio arrangement. I would have to implement the Koss mod as I quite like a decent bass.

I've been very happy with my Rift S. If your system can handle it, bump up HMD setting to > 1. Mine is only 1.25 (anything higher melts my laptop), and even that makes a pretty huge difference IMO. Keep supersampling at 1.

Try this experiment - cup your hand over your ear and the Rift S while playing, like you would to hear something in the distance. This small gesture amplifies the sound a surprising amount! I've been thinking of adding "flaps" to my Rift S to channel sound down to my ear. While it sounds hokey (pun not intended), it works and is scientifically valid (many top-line speakers use channels and air gaps to amplify sound).

Either that or plug in headphones, LOL.

The controllers are what's putting me off (though that is no concern in ED). I have a Quest and a CV1, and I've found I really, really miss the thumb rest. The lack of a thumb rest, combined with the slightly different grip button, makes me feel like I'm going to drop the Quest controller whenever I release the grip. Also, the higher center point makes the controller feel less hefty and slightly off-balance. While it's obvious why the controller needed a makeover, it saddens me that it went from being the best controller I've ever used, to one that simply gets the job done. :/
