Formidine Rift... what is it?

Sounds like we are not too far from each other Cmdr, I am currently 1700 ly from Heart nebula after leaving NGC7822 yesterday, should arrive at Heart tomorrow night sometime

What is your cmdr name? Send it to me and I'll send you a friend request so we can see each other on the map in-game.

This is sort of cool - I just entered NGC 6871 sector, and for the last few jumps have been noticing fewer stars, and brighter constellations, including NGC 7822 which I have been able to see off in the distance for a while now. So, go to line up my next jump, and what do I see to the port side of my Asp? What looks like a big bloody arrow (NGC 7822) pointing at a very small nebula off in the distance (which I assume is Heart or Soul). Very cool. I took a screenshot but am too tired right now to find it and post it, will do so tomorrow night. My target for tonight was to get to NGC 6871 sector, this was a very nice little bonus.

I thoroughly enjoyed surveying NGC 6871!

Ones you've GOT to check out are:
NGC 6871 24 - LOADS of stars in this system!
2MASS J20053679+3541215 - complex system
HD 227733 - star 9 has the largest protoplanetary disc I've seen ANYWHERE in this game! It is over 300 ls across and you can see it clearly from the central star when you jump in (6200 ls away).

Got pics on that protoplanetary disc? I'm curious I haven't seen one yet.

By protoplanetary disc, I mean a HUGE ring system...

You can see it even 6200 ls away...

At 270+ ls, it's already starting to fill the field of vision. The planet is about 4 ls away.

Here is the signpost I was referring to in the earlier post:

It actually looks like it is pointing a bit "below" the nebula...

Thanks, will check them out.

Hyponia is way out, its 33,000 LYS along the Perseus arm, and on our side of the Rift (if the rift stretches that far). I doubt Hyponia has anything to do with this, probably a place set for more distant content due to its distance from us.

Bovomit is still in the relative 'direction' of the R/R line, I'm not sure how far it deviates but once I get back in game I'll see if I can work it out.

Could very well be, although they are quite a ways off the R-R line.

I'm new to Elite, not familiar with the geometry of the galaxy, and not familiar with the novel that spawned this discussion, so maybe I don't know what I'm saying. But I'd like to point out that physical distance from the R/R line doesn't necessarily rule something out. It's more a question of angular difference. If I'm in the Reorte system, whats the angular difference between Rieqduat and Hyponia? If its small, the R/R line could still be said to generally point to Hyponia, but Hyponia could still be a vast distance from the actual R/R line. To give an example, the distance between Earth and the Sun is pretty large (relative to a kilometer) but a parsec away, the angular difference between the two is a maximum of one arcsecond, an extremely small angle. Just trying to help with what little knowledge I have. This thread's really interesting, but for all I know, there's 20* of difference between the two. That would certainly rule it out.

That's a good point. I've suspected the R&R line is just a signpost pointer giving us the general direction on where to find the rift (which I'm guessing is something quite large in area and not just a specific point or line across the Perseus Gap). I just had a look and Hyponia is almost at a 90 degree angle to the line so that surely rules it out as being connected with the rift.

While I understand that in game information should be given prominence over anything else, this Twitter exchange might be significant with respect to Formidine at least.

NGC 7822 was a cluster I thought had a role to play, acting as another signpost and one that pretty much points to the permit sectors across the rift, so I guess Drew's answer on there rules those regions out :( To be honest I've sort of turned my attention closer to home now and gone back to playing the game, working on gaining faction standing with Kahina in a hope she holds some clues post patch 1.3 via missions (and maybe the "quest" Drew mentioned) ;)

Ditto. I just got myself a Python this week to help me with faction building and trade homeside. It's looking more and more likely that the mystery (indeed, all mysteries) is going as far as it can at the moment, and we'll just have to wait for the next crumb.

I've just started stumbling into these threads which interest me greatly; (and the one posted by the Dark Wheel which I am still struggling to find a keyword and cypher for). In this thread you mention books. I know some books are available on the ED site. Which do people recommend I read, and in what order?

Thank you in advance.

This one is mainly from Elite: Reclamation.

I initially bought it as the main character was Kahina Loren, who's exploits you may have seen in GalNet, and it was the only Empire-centric novel. I then ended up here.

Anyone still exploring out beyond the rift? I'm currently parked out in DRYEAE AEB SJ-I D9-0 and relatively still within the r/r line. I'm not sure if the r/r line was meant to be taken literal or not, but I figure i'd go for it regardless. I'm not sure how much further out i can go. Best guess maybe another 500ly - 1000ly. The stars are starting to thin out and the 'sky' is getting rather dark out here.

Are there any points of interest that I should check out that haven't been thoroughly explored yet?

Im still out that way. No, not much worth checking out

I'm out in that direction too but my irregular play time means I don't move that fast. I hit the rift and had to turn left (anti-spinwards?) to get through.

Okay... not sure if this has been postulated but I'll throw this out there:
1. We know that to reach the Formadine Rift we have to "take a line from Reorte to Riedquat to the edge of the arm and ... keep going."
2. Drew hinted that "CMDRs may wish to consider the, ahem, core of the problem."

So... follow the line from Reorte to Riedquat to the edge of the Perseus Arm and then... stop. Now draw a line from SgrA* to that point and keep going that direction.

Many have gone looking and the Rift has been explored in part, however I'm not aware that anything significant has been found yet.

Cheers,

Drew.

Nice way to goad me forward! I just finished "Elite: Reclamation" on Audible and must say... I'm ordering the hard copy! Very well written.
