Forum Upgrade

Why do I get the tone that the PvP crowd is not happy having their own forum?
Really hope it's not some "troll, bait, shock, and salt" thing.

What if there was a PVE subsection, surely that be okay too? There isn't, which is oddly inconsistent. Do hope that's an oversight. I'm sure it is.

No, because PvE is a fundamental core feature of the game - it's nigh impossible to avoid.

PvP is entirely optional.

Right, thanks for clarifying; this seems to be a constant source of confusion, so burying it 3 layers deep I'm sure will solve (I don't honestly care either way, but if you are going to break the game into PVE/ PVP, then at least be consistent, argh!). *twitch*

Make a PvE section if you like.
Since, as has been pointed out, PvE is the core of the game I suspect it would be crowded.
And the mods would be busy with the "ganking" of the sub-forum constantly by certain members.

@Jason, I shared your concerns, most especially about the spectre of brisk forced movement of new threads out of DD removing a topical central hub for 'Everything relating to Elite Dangerous.'

However this morning I've had a positive exchange with Brett here...

...which hopefully indicates that's not the intention and that many new DD threads can still expect a reasonable starting life there, even if subsequently moved out to the appropriate sub if they become long running.

This is encouraging.

The people who play PvE haven't been asking for a dedicated forum for ages. It's not breaking the game up any more than it's breaking it into Alien/Non Alien (The Alien subforum has been in discussions for a long time too). All it's doing is giving a dedicated area for people to talk about things so they don't get lost amongst the tide of Dangerous Discussions.

From the look of the PvP forum they've all shot each other ;)

PvP seems something you have to practice in-game, rather than chat about in a forum.

I thought they had been asking for their own (sub)forum for some time?

Not necessarily, I think PvE players have been calling for a PvP forum for a while so that we don't have to see the latest gank videos or just generally view posts from a community that seems intent to antagonise others.

But the dancing dog on the last one was cute, really you can't go wrong with dogs!

I think it all depends on for what topics the different forums are exactly about and how the mods handle this. I guess it will take some time to get accustomed.

If the different special topic forums are about very specific questions or discussions about that topic, then Dangerous Discussions could be about more general discussions about topics.

For example a topic about PvP tactics with a Hauler would be in the PvP discussion. A discussion about the effect of PvP on the game population could be in the Dangerous Discussions forum.

A dedicated PvE forum would be a good idea if the forums are used that way.

We will see how this works out.

I thought videos should get posted in the Media sub-forum?

I've got to disagree with that - PvE is fundamental to the game. It would be like having a sub-forum for docking :)

Or a thread about "how does mission type XY work" - in a dedicated PvE forum such a thread would have the chance to be longer on the front page.

I agree that PvE is a fundamental part of the game and moving anything that touches PvE looks a bit over the top to me, but specific PvE related questions could get their own forum.

I think theses separated forums only work if they are about specific topics or questions. Everything that is more abstract or general could be in Dangerous Discussions.

Pretty sure the PVP people didn’t ask for a subforum, but they get one regardless. It’s not whether or not either is relevant, but if you are going to draw lines, at least be consistent. Otherwise it just looks bad. And imho, it looks bad.

Moving on.

I assuming that if I don't know where to put a new thread, due to it either touching multiple topics or not being aware of a specific sub-forum, I can still post it in Dangerous Discussions and allow the mods to move it where they deem best, yes?

That seems to be the idea, yes.

But there is inevitably a huge amount of cross-over - e.g. if I want to engineer my ship for exploration, should I post in Ships, Engineers, or Exploration? Tags solve this at a stroke, and from memory some clever systems even suggest tags to the thread starter based on the content of their post.

Engineers, because the main topic of that thread would be them, not exploration.
