I AGREE - directories are so 1990s.. It would be nice to have a tag-based system and a search feature that actually works. Right now I use Google and "site:https://forums.frontier.co.uk my search terms" to find things in this forum, but that doesn't help spotting new, interesting posts that I might not even think to search for. I'm worried that such posts might now get lost in the maze that is sub-forums.

So does posting in the correct forum so no change there. And unlike with hierarchical forums, posts can be parsed and tags suggested.

You'd be surprised as the amount of resources consumed from thread marking (reply status) and subscription checking! This is per every page load a user makes, multiply that by the amount of users online - guests included. One extra query per page load and additional render time on the servers PHP / Apache front end.

One little tweak perhaps, put 'modes of elite' and 'pvp' subforums in the same major group.
