FPS - it seems to be the windows & glass, or the light reflections being rendered on them

Interesting mistake (bug!) in the middle of the video. There seems to be a second, invisible plain about 3m above the ground. The game in general still suffers from such height distortions, don't know what to call it, I'm not a developer. Unfortunately you chose the title a bit unfortunate: "mistakes" suggests player errors. "Bugs" would be the better term in this case. I suspect you are using a translator (like me) where "bug" often translates to "mistake".
I have corrected the title of the video.
Thank you.

To add up, have a look at the FPS behavior in below video.
Setting on High, minus:
Bloom - OFF
Blur - OFF
Shadow - Medium
FX and Volumetric FX on LOW
And it is a an abandoned Settlement with no fires / sparks / smoke. Resolution 2560*1440, no v-sync on G-sync panel

Here's a before and after disabling the shader, i'm the closest to the window before going below 60fps (colors are faded because i was trying to fix colors using elite's xml and no 3rd party)

Before : 60fps - 100% GPU usage, fps drops if i move closer
After : 60fps - 65% GPU usage, fps and GPU usage does not change if i move closer.

I think you're onto something.

It's just sad that the community has to find these things themselves because FDev don't seem to be competent enough to do it themselves.

I think the NPC spawned inside the building. And if the walls are not tested for bullet collisions from that side (even not rendered), bullet goes through them :)
I had a bit similar bug, in which an NPC was created inside a block of ice, through which it shot me.

I don't generally have issues with my frame rate, I have the hardware to cope. It goes down a little in settlements but only a little, generally 45-51, except for one particular fire which drops my frame rate down to 10 every time I encounter it.

It is located upstairs in a CMD building at a T-junction between OPS and SEC. Do you know the one I mean? Is it a problem for you too?

Since I've done everything and I'm up to ******, can you tell us how to remove the shadows? because I remove them but they still work within the game

Yes

I have a list of workarounds that people can test (using 3dmigoto or Elite's graphic override xml):
  • the glass transparency shader
  • other shader/effects,
  • fire effect performance when using low settings
  • some graphic settings to avoid. Having a huge impact in some situations (like the terrain material quality on foot or near settlements).

I'd like to make a new post, should i use the PC section or the Elite Dangerous: Odyssey Discussion ?
I'm not sure if this should go in the bugtracker, it's so cluttered with duplicated bugs

Edit:
I created a post with the fixes here :

On some stations, have you noticed..
3KVRuBy.png

The planters have glass around them... that reflects the scene..

Now.. look around and see how many reflective surfaces you can spot? (Don't forget to look up!)

I get the desire of the graphics designers to make things look pretty. But there are trade offs to be made, and this particular one at least, I would have made.

I've found turning blur off and setting supersampling at 0.75 allowed me to crank all the other other settings to high/ultra. I'm running an i7 7700k plus GTX1080 I would honesty expect better performance than I'm getting. 40-60fps with occasional dips to 20 now but its not ideal. The game used to run 200+ in space Horizons I just don't get it... same game engine just newer\diff assets really I think my gpu though 2/3 generations old shouldn't be struggling to go above 60fps. I found no changes with different drivers or window/borderless.

For people still wondering, this fps problem is caused by two shaders handling reflections in windows and mission consoles at least
(in concourses and settlements, looking inside/outside). Small objects with reflections don't seem to have the problem.

I've disabled them in my workaround linked above and it fixes the problem for the time being.

So today the patch notes had this little line that got me excited enough to reinstall:
Optimisation
  • Glass shader optimisations have been made, along with fixes and scalability based on quality settings.
However, upon checking out the concourse at my home base, there appears to be no improvement in the actual issue we all know, as demonstrated below:

Looking through the doorway: 81 FPS

Sidestepping 3 feet to the left and looking through the window: 36 FPS
EliteDangerous64_2021-07-29_22-26-25.jpg

Both of these screenshots were taken less than an hour ago. Seems pretty clear that either the optimization didn't make it in, or it didn't actually fix the problem.

Here's hoping they get it sorted soon, as it seems to be a pretty massive performance drain.

Similar experience here - though they do seem to have optimised the cases where you can't see the glass right now better, so planetary bases which have way less internal glass than the concourse generally run better for me than they used to.

Thanks so, so much for including these shots!! Really helpful. There's quite a lot of interesting variation in performance for people happening right now so it's good to keep collecting this kind of data to see any further leads.

Thanks Sally.

Sadly I found the same thing mentioned in my very first post starting this topic - peering through some windows, close up, nearly halves my frame rate. (You have to get close for this to happen, but of course it's possible that there's a hit on frame rates from further back.)

However, there is some good news - early in this thread I showed that crouching in front of the red glass in the railings (facing the elevators) was cutting the frame rate in half, but that's now fixed. So the glass shader fix has dealt with some of the slowdowns. (Facing the wall cabinet inside the Vista store is also fixed.)

I do all my testing at the same station: Carrington Hub in Croatigae.

There's a strip of red glass in the Pioneer window at this station, and when that's in frame, close up, my frame rate drops from 60 to 32 consistently.

There's two different shaders for reflections:
  • one when looking outside from inside (through concourse or settlement building windows).
  • one when looking inside (through shop windows, in front of a mission console etc). In concourse and settlement.
@sallymorganmoore Performance was improved but is still very heavy on the GPU. The different experiences between players is probably the GPU headroom they have.
Depending on that headroom, people will keep 60fps, or not.

For example, on my GTX 1080, after update 6, gpu usage goes from 60% to 100% in front of some shop windows. So I stay at 60fps but that's still a huuge bump in GPU usage for a small effect (and lower GPUs will loose a lot of fps).
