Frontier: Can you please define your understanding of "Limited"

Nice to see a 20+ thread that has a happy ending for a change! Except of course for our good Captain K.

Something reeks though. People complain and we get this:
a) We've had a lot of requests since they came down to reinstate them as part of our 50% off deal
b) They'll be coming down on Monday and we have no plans to run the Viper flags again.

a) People didn't know there would be a sale, why would they 1) mail them about bringing back a limited edition and 2) ask for a discount while they're at it.
b) How convenient...they all along had the idea to run two sales of the flags! What a weird number to settle upon

I'm all fine with them saying they're not all about money, but these sentences look like 'marketing' sentences in order to please a crown instead of just being honest with us.

I'll accept a mis-type here - this time. And say:

Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.

Or as it was put so eloquently

a) Yeah, I think I probably wasn't clear enough with this one. Before the sale people asked us to reinstate the ship skin - then we thought it would be a good idea to put it up with the discount as a nice surprise.

b) We came to the decision to not run it again after we saw that it bothered people. It wasn't something we thought about beforehand.

I am being honest.

As we have a "limited" look at the hull of our ships I dont care at all what they sell cosmetic wise... limited or not.

Limitations are just there to define you. Without them we would be giant blobs floating around somewhere, doing pretty much nothing, given that most tasks are born out of necessity. And that goes for your view as well. With unlimited perspective, you don't really need to look at anything anymore, since your unlimited vision just cover anything automatically. And that also kills the ability to appreciate what little you can see. So it is for your own good, it is just that you have a limited way to look at your own limitations. Which is natural!

Hi everyone,

Just managed to get up to speed on this thread.

We just wanted to do a cool deal for people that didn't get the chance to buy the skins last time they were online, but we definitely should have looked more closely at our previous deals before putting this out. We've had a lot of requests since they came down to reinstate them as part of our 50% off deal - nothing malicious was meant by putting this up. This is the nature of sales such as Black Friday - businesses put up products at a reduced rate to give people a chance at snatching up something cool, and get some custom they might not have otherwise.

They'll be coming down on Monday and we have no plans to run the Viper flags again. We're keeping a close eye on what deals have gone out before to avoid any confrontation going forward.

Cheers.

That's what I always thought - a great chance for anyone who missed them.

For the future, I strongly suggest that you simply don't put stuff up for a limited time. Imho there was no reason in the first place for the flags to be time-limited. (The Cobra wireframe for the 30th anniversary is the only exception where I think a time-limit was justified.)

It is a multi-edged sword. On one hand, you have the people who revel in the knowledge of having something that cannot be acquired any more. On the other hand, you have people who join the game later and see all the nice things they miss out on because they are "out of stock". Then there are the people who will buy time-limited stuff "just in case" - not wanting to possibly regret not having them afterwards. Especially the latter case is what some companies willfully abuse. I am still very very angry at funcom at the stuff they did with the their cash shop for The Secret World, which screamed money grab every time they announced which clothes they would removed this week.

Just putting everything up as a permanent addition is the best solution that avoids all these pitfalls and makes the largest number of players happy. :)

Marketing Gamma 1.04 is incoming.

Full change log below:

- Fixed a bug where we put up 'limited edition' flag skins, take them down and then put them up again later.
- Stopped an error where we saw 'slow to reply to forum comments rate'.
- Improved communication when concerning changes to gameplay features.
- More hilarious self-referential list-based jokes.

Never stop.

Nah Mephane, limited editions are nice. As long as they're limited. It's always nice to have something that if not unique, at least is a minority item.

Also, try not to think that we're a massive corporation of suit-wearing greedy folk...

LIAR!!!!

I agree with you both.

If something is going to be permanent, make it that way. If something is going to be limited (as in rare) then also make it that way.

The only time limited stuff that should re-occurring IMHO is holiday related items (like Halloween or Christmas related stuff) although it would be nice to see more variety each year than the same old stuff wheeled out each year.

FYI Edward has turned this around enough in my opinion I've opted to upgrade to the box copy of the game.

Hurray. An honest answer that's not beating around the bush (or where the cat is not circling around the hot porridge as they say in Finland ^^). Thanks, that's all I ask for.

Cheers!

Yes we are all SHOCKED here that Frontier would do something like this... End line... they do not care about anything else then making money! I wish I could not see this coming... Can't wait for monthly fees!!!

Cheers Commanders,

Yeah, I noticed that the flag skins that were supposed to be limited are back up for sale.
Frankly I'm no longer sure what Frontier are up too - I paid the top price for the skin when it was stated it was limited, now its turned up again on 'sale'.

No matter what anyone says - this practice is wrong, plain and simple.

I would like to use the energy of this thread to get one thing clear.

Is it sure, that there will be no offers to add new NPC names to database by future fans/customers ?

My wife is somewhere up there, and I promised to find her :)

Seriously, I could not find exact promise.

On the contrary there is this text on the backers info page.

ELITE: DANGEROUS BACKERS FAQ
A lot of the products available through the Backer App are missing from the Elite: Dangerous Online Store. Are these still available or will they be available in the future?
If an item is not visible on the Elite: Dangerous Online Store then it is not currently available. We will be adding new products to the Elite: Dangerous Online Store over time,
but we cannot confirm any particular products at this moment.

So, can you confirm this, please. I tought it was clear. But reading these posts makes one wonder.

But In any case, I enjoy this game very much...as before.

We don't care about money more than our community, but to have a community, or to have a game at all, we've got to keep the business and the game running!

Here we come, you're bankrupting ? No ? Then why did you lied to us for making money ?

@Wicz
I suppose you didn't buy anything on the store except the game ? Or at least you didn't buy a limited skin when it was supposed to be limited ? Then, just don't troll.

Edward, pleased to meet you.

I believe you have been more honest than you intended, here: you manage to quietly put the responsibility back on the shoulders of the "community", who should be "understanding" (and buy your stuff) to "keep the business running".

This is just wrong: the community (your customers) have already backed the game, provided input for the designers and (amazingly) paid Frontier over the odds for the "privilege" of QA-ing each new build release for free. Frontier may not be a huge multinational, but this is not a fan-based, non-profit, we're-all-in-it-together enterprise. The responsibility to "keep the business running" lies wholly with the company, and they (you) can do this by doing what they said they would do and providing an excellent game - as promised...

I have to ask: why haven't you removed them from the store *now*? (you don't have to answer that... ;))

I am being honest.
As a consumer, I have always thought Marketing was a very strange mixture of sincerity and cynicism, massage and manipulation. I assume that (once in "fire-fighting" mode) most successful Marketing comms aim to be at least pragmatically honest.

I don't envy you your job :)
