Frontier: Can you please define your understanding of "Limited"

Yeah i guess it prob would happen.
I just hope we can keep our commander names at least.

Oh yes, you will keep those. I've had mind since Premium Beta and it continued into Gamma, and since Gamma is just pre-release I am 99.999999999% sure you'll be fine

Thanks for replying Ed, but really this kind of stuff just simply shouldn't happen in the first place IMO. These skins were pushed on a 'they'll be gone soon' basis and now they're back at 50% off, just a few weeks later and before the game's even officially released - I find it pretty surprising that no one thought this was a bad idea.

"Before the sale people asked us to reinstate the ship skin - then we thought it would be a good idea to put it up with the discount as a nice surprise." - Please give these things a little more thought in future. Just putting them up again for sale would have been a nice surprise for anyone who missed the boat first time round, at 50% off it looks somewhat insulting to those you'd just sold them to, particularly under the pressure of 'limited.' I'm OK with 'limited' meaning 'limited release windows throughout the year,' but not back so soon *at half price* (particularly when it was clear that in this case most viewed 'limited edition' as not to be sold again, or at the very least not any time soon).

I personally don't think that the flags should ever have been 'limited' as they seem like just the sort of thing that newcomers would like to pick up as they join the game, and to be honest, they're not really all that special to justify a limited edition IMO and don't mark any particular event. Personally I don't mind seeing them back up for sale at all, just not happy about the price cut considering the timing (I can understand how others might have not wanted them back at all though, given the original product description).

I also wouldn't mind seeing the chrome and other 'premium' skins back in future too, but you guys have got to make this clear to people from the outset (and please don't slash the price dramatically so close after a release - These are 'goodwill, pay over the odds' items, it's not the same as a Steam sale - Leave it a while at least please before making reductions or do what you've done with the gold skin - a cheaper price for 'early adopters'). I think it'd be a good thing to allow some of these back from time to time as £10 is a *lot* of money for a skin and people don't necessarily know what ship(s) they'll want to specialise in yet.

Good move on the free Cobra skins and reduced gold Viper though - This kind of stuff actually encourages sales in the long term IMO. Though I personally still find £10 too high a price for skins which it seems there will be a fair few of throughout the year and are very quick to produce art-wise, that's a different matter. I've not bought anything yet as nothing's really taken my fancy, but a gunmetal paint job for some of the larger FdL craft might tempt me though ;).

I agree with you both.

If something is going to be permanent, make it that way. If something is going to be limited (as in rare) then also make it that way.

The only time limited stuff that should re-occurring IMHO is holiday related items (like Halloween or Christmas related stuff) although it would be nice to see more variety each year than the same old stuff wheeled out each year.

FYI Edward has turned this around enough in my opinion I've opted to upgrade to the box copy of the game.

Oh I wasn't saying we shouldn't have permanent items. Definitely! Obviously even. But limited edition should be limited edition. Like blue smarties... wait... bad example.

Yes we are all SHOCKED here that Frontier would do something like this... End line... they do not care about anything else then making money! I wish I could not see this coming... Can't wait for monthly fees!!!

Cheers Commanders,

Like I said in an earlier post, they're newish at this marketing malarky. (FD have worked with external publishers in the past rather than publishing their own game). Can I suggest that a) we call them on it when they do stuff like this b) give them the benefit of the doubt. Consumers are different and the ED playerbase is different and if I can be smug, on average, we're a smart savvy community. So we teach them as well what we will and won't let them get away with. Ed says this was in response to requests for the skins to be relaunched. They've realised they have to be more careful on their wording (as long as they don't get technical using the letter to defeat the spirit of the law) and they'll look into not repeating this type of error.

Do you really believe they have any ignorance of the letter defeating the spirit of the law after the lengths to which they're going in order to deny people refunds they're absolutely entitled to? A more cynically calculated exercise in deliberate dishonesty one couldn't hope to find. In my opinion. This 'limited skin' cash-grab is just the latest disgusting example of how this company operates.

I have to say I normally subscribe to the 'do not attribute to malice what could more-easily be attributed to incompetence' school of thought, but FD are testing my faith in the theory. They don't seem to be learning from previous mistakes.

I have been and still am trying to follow this approach.
I have a lot of goodwill for FD and I believe a lot of it is deserved.

Go back in time, sign up for the MechWarrior Online beta. Observe for one year or so. Then you can come back to the present and talk about disgusting operating practices.

8 people and not one thought "hey, selling these limited skins a few weeks later at half price is a bit crook". I find that very hard to swallow.

While I appreciate that this has finally been addressed, I don't think it really has. The skins are still for sale. Frontier now know people have issues about how these skins were and are being sold and admit it isn't well thought out but they're keeping those "limited" skins on sale for another four days. I think they should pull them from the store and learn their lesson. Making light of it might appease some people but it does nothing to actually address the mistake. Removing the flags from the store right now would be the only correct and ethical response rather than a vague excuse and continued sale of the skins.

why do people even accept this online MMO F2P type microtransaction bull?

and how is 13€ for a damn SKIN texture "micro" anyway? This is insane pricing and I expect that

EVERY
SINGLE
SKIN

will be available to buy in the universe with ingame credits as per the Kickstarter FAQ, just as this graphic came up on reddit stating clearly that everything will be available, in game, buyable with ingame credits.

so please let me know which space stations are selling these and what the credits prices are. thanks

They also said they were interested in doing cash for credits but have backtracked on that nice little money earner after we went absolutely ape about it.

Whether we like it or not. THEY HAVE TO MAKE MONEY. And I'm far cooler about them doing that via cosmetics (NOT BEING AVAILABLE IN GAME) in exchange for NO PAY TO WIN.

Went back on promise of cash for credits (ultimately pay to win). Decided to make money via cosmetics.

I can live with that.

Pay to win would be a dealbreaker for me. Also, I have zero interest in any payment modes that are based on subscription. I wouldn't mind a bit of in-game advertisement on the billboards of stations as long as it's not immersion-breaking or excessive. The cosmetics in the store are really the best way for FD to earn additional cash, that we could ask for.

You have no right to be upset if an item goes on sale at a later date, that is just life, it happens. That is the risk you take making a purchase now vs. waiting. But this does not apply to limited items, and really has nothing to do with limited items, but bringing back limited items and then having them cheaper is just adding insult to injury.

Well yes. I can agree to that, and felt I was more or less stating the same? ;)

Hi everyone,

Just managed to get up to speed on this thread.

We just wanted to do a cool deal for people that didn't get the chance to buy the skins last time they were online, but we definitely should have looked more closely at our previous deals before putting this out. We've had a lot of requests since they came down to reinstate them as part of our 50% off deal - nothing malicious was meant by putting this up. This is the nature of sales such as Black Friday - businesses put up products at a reduced rate to give people a chance at snatching up something cool, and get some custom they might not have otherwise.

They'll be coming down on Monday and we have no plans to run the Viper flags again. We're keeping a close eye on what deals have gone out before to avoid any confrontation going forward.

Cheers.

Fair enough ;)

I'd prefer cash for credits.
You can earn credits in the game so you really don't have to buy them.
Sure you don't have to buy skins but they are effectively content locked behind a paywall, stump up the cash or you can't use them.

Cash for credits is not inherently pay to win either as you can earn credits in game, it's more pay to shortcut. Pay to win means the most powerful weapons/ships etc.. are locked behind a paywall.

It's funny how the cash for credits pay to win argument directly contradicts the "There is no win"/"It's not a competitive game" arguments about switching groups etc..and that the 50%/25% insurance bonus somehow isn't pay to win.
