Elite / Frontier Frontier Elite 2 - Amiga Version

As I noticed some threads being version specific I thought I'd create this one.

I've just finished playing FE2 for the last 3 hours. I restarted everything after a loooong time. Playing it on Amiga Forever (http://www.amigaforever.com/)

Got my data disk set up and I FINALLY got enogh credits to get rid of that Eagle Fighter. I stripped by ship bare, no weapons, only auto pilot and been doing the milk run between Sol and Barnards Star trading Luxury goods and robots respetively.

So I went from
Eagle to Viper Defence Craft
Viper Defence Craft to Cobra Mk III

Am considering getting an Asp Explorer, it needs a crew but only 1. Want to get around 300,000K credits before I kit out and load up with shields and lasers.

I have to say I really liked the Vipder Defence craft, good range, good trading storage cheap on fuel usage.

Remember everyone, Frontier does not require "jousting" for fighting. There is another thread here with a 5 minute combat tutorial, here is the youtube link.

Ok I now have an Asp Explorer with 1 crew member. I am trying to get that mission to take you to Van Maanens. The one you need a permit for. Generally in tutorials I always see "get your permit from Sol" yeah well, I never see the mission that asks me to take a parcel there ahhh well.

My Asp (ha!) can do the distance from Sol as it is 13.59 LY but getting from Van Maanens back to Barnards is a long trip.

The idea according to this guide. http://www.sharoma.com/frontierverse/trading.htm is to do SOL --> Van Maanens -- > Barnard's Star

Taking Luxury Goods from SOL to Van Maanens (where they are illegal!) then Fruit and Veg to Barnards and then the usual Robots to Sol.

Not quite as simple because you need to do big jumps so need a bigger ship or stop between which means you are away from the safe route of Sol/barnards which means you will get attacked which means just having an autopilot is not enough.

So before you do this get your cash up with the milkrun. I have 400,000 or so credits so far on milk runs and can carry 5 tons of fuel and 69 tons or cargo. All I have is an autopilot. Actually I'm pretty sure I only have a class 2 hyperdrive at the moment so I will have to swap for a class 3 to make the distance else stop along the way which I don't fancy. Milk run seems far more profitable and safe but it is getting time to venture out.

So to venture out I'll need a 1 mw beam later as well. Some other things might be nice as well but lets see how I go with just those.

Sooooooooo all I need now is wait for the bulletin board mission in Sol that wants me to take a parcel to VanMaanens. Of course I could go there without one too but I'd rather do it with.

As far as I remember, the parcel mission you are waiting for is not an ordinary mission, but for the Federal military. Look out for the Federal Military - Adventures Unlimited advert.

When you find one, also remember to ask for a permit! ;)

I didn't know that the military gave permits, i thought you only got those from the ordinary bulletin board

Nope. It is an ordinary mission. A SHIP WANTED to take parcell to vanMaanens etc. Usually they want to take 5-7 passengers which is too expensive but occasionally you get the parcel which I need !

I just need that permit so I can do the run. Only saw it once, and my autopilot died mid way and I died and of course my save was BEFORE I got the job on the board and it was gone when I reloaded.....ahhh well.

Just finished playing for another 4 hours. Nothing....so far just passengers to there....it will come again.

I also had to wait 6 days for docking clearance at Barnards too arrrghhhh but the BEST one was when I got launch clearance and it put he in a HEAD ON collision with another ship coming in...thanks a LOT Traffic control !!!

Still having fun. Still have my ASP and now over 1.2 million credits. Just waiting for that damn PARCEL mission to be available again to get that permit !

20 years since you played it JazHaz ? Goodness. :)

Yes they give one to visit a Ross prison facility. Then there is another for VanMeetans facility that is non military and then there is only 1 other permit oddly enough. I thought there would be stacks.

Oh here is another link for you....the outstanding
Frontier Fundamentals.

Here is Frontier Fundamentals Part 1. There are several recent ones too. Enjoy.

i dont think that's the military at all, i can only check on the pc version since my amiga is long gone, but just recently i did find the mission, and yes it was an ordinary one, to send a parcel. you can also check if any group wants to go there, if you have enough room. also check every station you can, the missions are not the same everywhere. and i'm not sure if it has to be in Sol, though that's probably where i found it and where it's more likely to be found.

I actually wanted to do a military mission requiring to go to VM's star, but i couldnt because i didnt have the permit, then i just looked at the board and there was a mission (civilian) to go there. you have to ask if a permit is needed then accept the mission, wheter you finish it or not you'll have the permit. the military wont give you the permit.

permits required for (AFAIK):
Van Maanen's Star (religious dictatorship)
Ross 128 (prison)
YZ Canis Minoris (communists)

Yes as I said previously there are only 3 permits yes.

Sol is the only place I have ever seen mention of VanMaanens, it's just the parcel mission is just sooooo hard to find.....well for me anyway.....over 6 hours play I only saw it once...........I'll keep going with it.

@Nicomak Just buy Amiga Forever and run it on that. I believe the Amiga and PC versions are pretty similar but the PC had much poorer textures so the Amiga version is the one of choice, only the Amiga CD32 version had graphics enhancements I believe.

IIRC you can boost the Asp's range immensely by sticking a Class 3 Military drive in it. Increases your running costs (and you need somewhere to ditch the radioactives) but you can jump a hell of a long way.

I recommend going to the different stations as well as any surface stations. Each one has a separate bulletin board.

I could put in a class 4 in the Asp that would reach vanMannens but yes the military drive might be the answer if a class 4 won't fit.

Cheers DWorth.

I'm currently on 1.5 million credits and still doing the milk runs until I get that mission ! By the time I see it I'll probably have a Panther Clipper !!....ahh yes but no crew ! In fact even having a crew of 5 is a problem as there are not many crew around and I only have a crew of 1.

You're probably best buying the Panther in a busy core system like Sol where there'll be more adverts placed by prospective crew. Or: work up to it. Plan to buy a series of ships with increasing crew requirements (so you can keep moving from place to place earning money rather than being stuck in dock for a year) then buy the Panther last.

Great advice there DWorth. :) The "build up" to getting the Panther was a really fun part of the game as you got to experience all the ships leading upto it. For example, Pythons and Tiger Traders I found to be really useful and fast for their size. The big Boa was a great ship too, had that "Star Destroyer vibe" going on, although I wish it's turrets had been fixed so they would work properly. Trying to hit anything with the main gun could be tricky due to it's mass. Mind you  with enough shield generators, you could always use the "fly swatter manoeuvre" and just ram those pesky pirates! :D

I've had no battles yet. I have no weapons, no scanner nothing just autopilot at present.

When that vanManeens mission comes I won't be able to take 69t of cargo anymore as a 1mw Beam laser and Scanner will take up some room....oh and an ECM of course.

Get a 5MW pulse laser instead. Lighter and more destructive. Very satisfying to pop little ships with your first shot and two shots will kill anything up to an Asp I think. Only really well shielded targets will pose any problem at all. Practice your engines off maneuvres a bit around a station, lynx or cruiser then get your butt to some more dangerous systems.

A class 4 hyperdrive will fit in a asp but not much else after fuel. Short range is the only drawback of the asp. A cobra mkIII with class 3 military drive hits the sweet spot of decent range, well equipped, and can still trade a bit. Better for assassinations and military career. Military drives don't increase range, just they take up much less cargo space.

Cheers MacArthur. I only got the Asp because of the cargo space to build up in the milk runs.

You think a 5mw Pulse then ? Ok, I'll try that. So 5mw Pulse, ECM, Scanner and autopilot then. Providing I get this damn missing to VanMannens arrrghhhhh it's STILL not coming up.

I'll probably have 2 million credits doing this milk run between Barnards and Sol before I see it. :)
