Elite / Frontier Frontier Elite 2 - Amiga Version

Yea, the "Phlaschbugher" to give it it's proper name, is a real scalpel of a weapon. Your aim will need to be good to get the best out of it. But with practice the 5MW pulse is one of the best weapons in the game, takes up hardly any room and packs quite a punch.

You could also fit a laser cooling booster for a while until you get used to it. That should give you a longer firing time before it overheats.

Hmmm interesting choices, I will have to try these out.
Currently on my live stream I am using the beam laser because I am lazy and I am trying to get my kill count up quickly. :p:D

Get a 5MW pulse laser instead. Lighter and more destructive. Very satisfying to pop little ships with your first shot and two shots will kill anything up to an Asp I think. Only really well shielded targets will pose any problem at all. Practice your engines off maneuvres a bit around a station, lynx or cruiser then get your butt to some more dangerous systems.
Seconded, athough you need to be a bit of a sharpshooter to use a pulse laser in combat. Even more so if it's a mining laser.
Still, if you want to do assassinations and you want to do them early, 30MW mining laser is invaluable, you can even fit it into an Eagle if you temporarily switch to an interplanetary drive (unfortunately this means engaging your mark in port space), and the victim generally won't have time to fire energy bomb.

5MW pulse is more practical for most applications, though.

Another advantage of pulse lasers is that not only do they pack more oomph per weight, but they don't let maneuvers limit your damage output nearly as much. With beam lasers you need to keep your target in crosshairs to inflict damage, with pulse lasers you can just swing crosshair across it, poke, and resume evasive maneuvers.

A class 4 hyperdrive will fit in a asp but not much else after fuel. Short range is the only drawback of the asp. A cobra mkIII with class 3 military drive hits the sweet spot of decent range, well equipped, and can still trade a bit. Better for assassinations and military career. Military drives don't increase range, just they take up much less cargo space.

OTOH Asp can fit decent amount of equipment even with standard class 3 drive meaning you can fit a scoop and not worry about uninhabited systems or ones with no military fuel in stock.

Cheers everyone.

But until I see that VanMannens mission, I'll keep doing those milk runs and now I have over 1.6 million credits.... <sigh>

[UPDATE]
Ok I'm starting not to enjoy this anymore. I got a tiger transport, waited more than 5 months and STILL have no crew. What is it with the crew ?!!!! Surely it can't be this much of a grind...what do I have to do wait a year ??? I am in SOL the hub of everything. Of course if I have a Cobra, it's FULL of crew on the station. The second I get a ship that needs more than 2 crew....forget it...they all vanish.

Seems like unbalanced play here and it's making me grind..... not too pleased to be honest.

Why do you keep boring yourself with milkruns? Get a combat worthy ship and go make some high risk deliveries, assassinate someone, or go to Phekda on a pirate popping trip.

How fast your credits increase is not a measure of fun.

Ah the wait for a crew. Utterly rubbish and probably the most pointless waste of time. I'm glad in ED you will be able to have a robotic crew. I've heard tales of people waiting for years to get the crew members they need! If I were you I'd downgrade and take on some missions.

I always did enter Mars High and looked bullitin Board, and checked if enof crew was there before i upgraded to a bigger ship.

And its the station i got all my 3 permits.

How many times I've had to hit the stardreamer over and over again waiting for another crewmwmber to advertise on the BBS so I can take off.....

And thats a good place to pick up all the permits.

Haaaaaaaaaaaax!!

Hey Styggron. If you do manage to dig your real Miggy out, here is a handy hack for the Miggy version of Frontier for use on a floppy disk. You could (amongst other things) have a Panther without the need for any crew. ;) Once you have modded the disk (see instructions) you could create an adf of it for use in Amiga Forever or Win UAE. Of course the trick is transferring that over to a PC afterwards. If I was able to dig out my own Miggys I would make one but I cant, at least for now. Anyone up for it?

 But that would void the warranty!!!

@All Yes I know I could go out and do more stuff, I want to PRACTICE first per se. I have different save games I have

- original asp still doing milk runs waiting for the vanMannens parcel mission
- The tiger trader ship waiting for crew (8 months wait SO far !!!!!)

The only reason I was going to get the tiger trader was to get more credits from the milk runs before I venture out.............and yes yes I can practice with a small ship I know. But if waiting for crew is this long...not sure I will continue with it. 8 month so far is ridiculous. As I said if I had a cobra there it is FULL of crew so it is like it DETECTS you have a ship that needs a crew and POW hardly any there. Yes you need to get 1-2 at a time sure but waiting this long....no I don't think so....it basically halts the game..... ahh well it was still fun.

I'll keep at it but not for much longer if I get no crew. I might go back to the ASP saves and continue from those. (Another reason why I want SP offline in Elite Dangerous, multiple saves for multiple "lives" and experimentation.).

@Geraldine cheers for the suggestion but I'd need some other equipment to be able to make it work might I'm afraid. I wish there was a PC program where I can load an ADF and move files around on it though without opus etc.

Commander's Log

ok just finished a 4 hour sessions of FE2....

Ok for the commanders log today....

As I have enough credits, around 2.1 million. I bought

1- 1mw beam laser
2- Radar Mapper
3- ECM
4- Scanner

I know people said 5mW laser, I tried that, I prefer the beam for now. So I went off to the Epsilon Eridani system, destroyed 4 Osprey fighters...they damaged teh crap out of me, the autopilot would not dock so I had to go in nice and slow ! It was fun !!!!! Took a good 45 minutes in total... I had 85% hull damage. Might get a shield booster. I sold Luxury items to them as they are a tourism place.

Ok so back to Sol and I saw a few military missions. One to Alpha Centauri.....
only 4.63 light years eh ? Easy........and it is Nov 3 and I need to be there by Nov 13.... piece of pie.....

Yeah right !!!!!!!!!!! Over 950,000 AU when I get there, so yes I had the fuel but I arrived there Dec 4th and got a bad rep !!!

How the HECK am I supposed to get there THAT fast when I jump in system sooooooooooooooo far away from the target (Eden Station).

I'm in an ASP Explorer so not too shabby I thought !

Thoughts ?

PS: From what I understand about Elite IV (Elite Dangerous) I will have flight assist down pretty low if not off. LOVE the newtonian flight model ! :)

Full Thrust!

Ah,....Alpha Centauri. :D

You have played Pioneer Styggron. You know how the ships in it only use their retro thrusters for minor course corrections, not as Frontier does in using them to slow the craft's approach to it's destination. So my advice is, when entering Alpha Centauri, do what the Pioneer ships do, after you have locked onto your destination, take note of the distance and half it in your mind. Use the autopilot to line your ship up and switch it off along with your engines.

Now hold down the enter key to fire your main thrusters and hit the stardreamer. Keep holding that enter key until you are half way there then switch off the stardreamer. Turn your ship around 180 degrees and hold the enter key again and hit the stardreamer again.

Keep a close key on your distance to destination. Once you are "close enough", pause and you now have two options. If your really close you could switch on your autopilot and hit the stardreamer to max. Doing this will instantly teleport your ship to docking. The other option is to just let the autopilot take you the rest of the way as it normally does.

Doing this can shave weeks off travel, although make sure you have plenty of fuel for your interplanetary drive because you will use a heck of a lot of it on long voyages. ;)

The autopilot+stardreamer has a bug/feature you can exploit here. It's a cheat but I'm not above using it to make a delivery on time or attend an "appointment". Do just like geraldine describes except don't bother to spin around half way to decelerate. Keep accelerating to some insane speed, then coast for a bit when you're bored of holding enter. When you get to about 1AU out, pause the game, engage autopilot and go straight to max time acceleration. You will be magically decelerated and go straight to the docking sequence.

Occasionally it won't work and you'll find yourself being catapulted out the other side of the system. Oh, and you'll still probably be late for Alpha Centauri missions.

Yes you could do that too MacArthur, but I would only use that as a total last resort to make that deadline and yes missions or deliveries to Alpha Centauri have to be carefully weighed up before taking them on. There are also quite a few other systems in the game too that you have to be careful about, especially with Trinary and Quintuple systems. They tend to involve massive distances too.

There really is ****** all in Alpha Centauri when you get there. One small station in orbit around Eden and that's your lot.
