Elite / Frontier Frontier Elite 2 - Amiga Version

Thanks everyone. :)

Yes the reverse thrust tehnique is in Frontier fundamentals set of videos as well and of course what REAL ships do, still did not make it on time to Alpha Centauri. Got no where near half way and was almost at the deadline. That mission seems almost undoable...........still, I'll keep at it. :):)

........and yes there is Sweet Felicity Arkwright at the system for 300cr  Also having trouble finding things on the map, the resolution just isn't there and there is no find (that was Pioneer again I was thinking). Still, it's fun to look around and it is amazing it all fits on ONE floppy disk !!! I have to say some planets with rings etc look VERY nice ! I like to sit there with the stardreamer watching orbits, sunsets etc....such a pity ED won't have it (as it could in Single player offline.......no speeding time issues then as you are your own universe in SP OL)

I think I took Fruit and veg, Air processors. You'd think they would want Luxury Goods !

A few other notes

  • I generally have to turn on "Elite" style controls else I can't "roll" to align up with some stations when the autopilot just does wierd things. I also noticed some stations don't align you till you are almost inside whilst others align you when you are further away. This was the case with Episilon Eridani. I had to compensate for rotation the good ol Elite way. You know what ? That was fun ! :)

It was fun !!!!!
See!?
:D

Credits are simply what pays the bills.

One of my most memorable experiences (it was in FFE, though) was having both lateral thrusters and half the hull shaved-off by an IC with 20MW laser and having to manually intercept, then land on an Earth-like planet with about 2G surface gravity, without any way to fully cancel out sideways drift.

I had to lie down for a while after managing that. :p

LOVE the newtonian flight model ! :)
I'm always happy to hear that.

I have a tip for you regarding Newtonian - system map simulates gravity acting on small objects (like ships and whatnot, it doesn't check for collisions, though), so you can use time controls to map out your orbital trajectory to do short range maneuvers with style (anything from intercepting orbiting stations to flying around gas giants' moon systems, you can even just put ship in orbit in engines off mode).

Also, you can try entering gas giant's atmosphere and watch rings overhead beyond layers of clouds (best watched far from equator - from equator they will look like just a straight line).

Ah,....Alpha Centauri. :D

You have played Pioneer Styggron. You know how the ships in it only use their retro thrusters for minor course corrections, not as Frontier does in using them to slow the craft's approach to it's destination. So my advice is, when entering Alpha Centauri, do what the Pioneer ships do, after you have locked onto your destination, take note of the distance and half it in your mind. Use the autopilot to line your ship up and switch it off along with your engines.

Now hold down the enter key to fire your main thrusters and hit the stardreamer. Keep holding that enter key until you are half way there then switch off the stardreamer. Turn your ship around 180 degrees and hold the enter key again and hit the stardreamer again.
Basically the way I fly as well when in a hurry. It can be quite a bit faster (in game time, not real time) than automated flight as well.

Still, for Alpha Centauri I prefer using yet another method - laughing in mission giver's face and finding something else to do.
:p

Speaking of Pioneer - it did the right thing by splitting the system.

Also having trouble finding things on the map, the resolution just isn't there and there is no find
Always memorize sector's coordinates.

Yep I use the sector coordinates.

The orbital simulation is excellent, I managed a slingshot I was amazed that worked but it did, the gravity of the planet slingshot me around at an angle.

Having a lot of fun with FE2 at the moment.

The best place for Federal missions outside of Sol is Eta Cassiopiea. The system contains the main Federation naval base so there are always lots of missions to nearby systems. One particularly good run is between Eta Cassiopiea and AC79 3888, a nearby mining/industrial system. There are often lots of missions between the two and you can take liquor/luxury goods from Eta to AC79 and Robots and Computers back the other way.

True, but you don't want Eta Cassiopea if you're using a military drive.
Pretty much all the fuel imported into the system goes to military and none is sold on the free market.
If you don't bring your spare fuel, you're stuck.

Cool cheers ! Thanks for that DWorth !!! This is almost like FE2 JUST being released and we are talking about tricks and tips on a BBS ;)

Yikes ! That WAS a close call !!!!! Cheers DraQ. I was thinking about getting a Military drive.

I recall many moons ago being stuck in Eta Cass hoping for some military fuel for sale. I never got any and had to sell my hyperdrive for a standard one just to get the hell out of there.

Goodness EVERY SINGLE military mission is just IMPOSSIBLE to complete in the time alloted. Even close systems with no tricks or anything they just want impossible times.... arrrghhhhhhhh

Fed missions? Yes they can be tough to complete on time. Thats why you must have the right ship if your perusing that career, fast with plenty of range. Later on, things get better with the assassination, recon and bombing missions. However if you wish to work for the Imps, things are a bit easier in the beginning. Tons of low level missions on Topaz in the Facece system.

And no, I am not getting into the Fed vs Imps debate! :D

You can go there, but don't think about taking any cargo there unless you can also carry a full jump worth of extra fuel and can count on yourself remembering to (if you're forgetful, just don't).

You need to hunt for some or get yourself a dedicated courier ship with oversized drive.

Zeesze and Anlave are pretty good systems to look for easy courier missions, due to their proximity (they are also close to Eta Cassiopea). Beta Hydri is also pretty good.

Yes. Pity we can't own multiple ships. It is a pain to keep selling etc....ahhh well.

Yes maybe a Viper is better for these missions. Goodness as I said even a close system of 4 LY can't be reached by the time those twits tell me to deliver it by goodness !!! Best I could do is 2 days late... <gong>

I'll check out the ones you mentioned. Oh my combat rating is "Poor" now so it's getting there. I had one attacker that was purposely "jousting" so I kept adjusting my speed watching theirs....it took me a while to get them but I got them !!!!

You will reach a moment, like many of us have, where everything falls into place and you will find yourself reacting to enemy moves almost without thinking about it. That's the funny thing about the Newtonian flight model. :D

I did use a Viper until i got the bombing and foto missions, then i swapped to the Imp Courier. Take only missions that have atleast 10 day limit on em.
I did most of my missions from the Fed naval base.

Never underestimate my incompetence.;)

True. The only cases when the enemy can be hard to hold onto is when they are running from a missile with a faster or just as fast ship, but then I usually lock the autopilot on them for convenience.

Yes I've done that too. I have to admit though.....the original Elite flight model was something I really had to work at to get the best out of it. Strangely, I always found it more difficult to fly using that rather than Newtonian. Perhaps that's just me though. :S

Goodness some enemies speed up as they strafe you and whiz and whirl around hard to keep them in your sites.......LOL....I guess that's the point. I had to constantly adjust speed at with out to stop the 'jousting'. They used to come in and accelerate....yikes........took me a while to get them.

I'm trying to find profitable traderuns now....I tend to always go back to Sol/Barnards for a refill. Maybe I need to go out on a sight seeing tour. I'm still in my Asp.

Just for the record, see the vid in my sig and remember to always use "engines off" mode and manual overrides when in combat (possible exception being fighting near planetary surfaces).
