Frontier have anointed chosen ones again...

On the odd occasion I've accidentally stumbled into r/elite_dangerous all it reminds me of is r/games so I try and get any of my ED news from elsewhere and avoid the 40 pages of nebula pictures and upside down SRV's.

Its not all bad, it gets some fun content. It does wind up with a bit too much "I'm Elite, Finally!" stuff too though.

Yea I was gonna say its one thing to shill for a community you built with others and its another to shill for a social media platform.

Btw have you heard that Facebook is awesome and Zuckerberg is like a total genius?
I see you've prepared to login to Facebook Rift VR in October 🥳

Also an admin/moderator and info sourcer 😂

The Reddit community is quite active and keeps me busy too 🤩
I've jokingly referred to you as our resident super-sleuth, but I do actually recognise and respect the effort you put in to curating the games current events and community created content.

Surely you're not suggesting videos are padded out so influenzas can get that sweet sweet monetisation money.
Nah, no one I can think of does long pregnant pauses between their sentences narrating what they read on the forums, or plays a long rolling list of their patreons, or plugs their patreon community in every video they do, do they? Oh...!

And e-peen posts "look at me with my newly acquired corvette/cutter/conda"

Sure, but presumably you previously weren't being given relatively-expensive free stuff. You are now placing your trust in our trust.

Companies are always giving YouTubers stuff. Some of it I accept, other stuff I reject. I turned down a £2k pc because I didn't like the company and didn't want to support it.

I accepted an Oculus Rift from Oculus because I love VR and feel it's s great headset.

I'm always upfront about these things. Like I say, it's nothing new.

Also, as I said earlier in this thread, I haven't given much thought to the box that was sent to me. I'm considering doing a giveaway as I have no need for it, and I think others would really like it.

Cheers, finding new info about things is fun for me. And the banter is great fun. Likes and upvotes are a silly irrelevant bonus haha

I really don't get the hate against "streamers" / "youtubers" / "content creators" / "influencers". (well actually I do get the hate against "influencers" as it's a quite stupid use of the word).

In the end they're doing exactly the same we are all doing here: speaking about stuff they care about and giving their opinions on it. They just use videos in a different platform instead of forum posts. And just like posts in a forum, you can see the content or not, agree or not, care about it or not, no need to hate them or kill their mothers.

I went through a similar thing with Lego some years ago.
As an amateur it feels great to get free stuff - especially if it's exclusive - but not so fun when you get emails from the benefactor reducing your "allowance" or offering your competitors exclusive and more frequent deliveries as you were less enthusiastic about the product.

Ultimately you just have to assume that everything you read online is somehow paid for. As long as it's declared then you can make an informed decision about the information.

None of my blog is paid for by anyone aside from me and my own time, so if you want a read of Frontier's lengthy development of the game then you can judge it fairly and squarely and often in their own words ;)

I did ask a couple of times (two different Community reps) if I could have an interview with someone from FDev about the development of the game but unfortunately I didnt get a reply on either occasion - which I get as they're interested in Twitch and YouTube etc... Still the blog is now close to half a million page impressions and over 260k visitors, so it's not done badly.

This is exactly the same arrangement they've used for Coaster and Zoo as far as I can see. And come to that, exactly the same arrangement that many major studios use to help increase their exposure. I can only speak for myself but the idea that someone's stream will somehow brainwash me is laughable, which renders most of the criticism equally laughable.

There are certainly issues around the way social media 'influencers' are used in marketing these days but what FDev are doing isn't even in the same ballpark as rentagob online celebrities peddling any old crap on their channels for a grand's worth of the product. In particular I'll bet you a pound to a pinch of you-know-what that any streamers involved in this have been streaming Elite for years already and I'd also lay good odds that they are not people who have always been universally positive about every aspect of the game, mainly because I can't think of any streamer I've ever seen outside of FDev Towers who is.

To get an idea of how genuinely committed a lot of the streamers actually are, I'd recommend having a look at the last Coaster stream Bo appeared on before she left Frontier. 32:50 if the timestamp doesn't work. Bring tissues.

I need to get onto YouTube. I could be the next Jake Paul of Elite.

Its not genuine hate. It's "please tell us whats going on we are very excited about the DLC" communicated really badly.
